Kathryn’s sent me two chapters of The Professor’s Discretion to beta in as many weeks, and I just received yet another this week. *twirls giddily* I do so love a prolific writer! And it's seriously like she's climbed inside my head to figure out what themes and types of exchanges I love the most in this fandom and promptly tailored the whole fic just to make me squeeful.

Like, at the moment, it's not very shippy, it's a mentor/student kind of relationship and I so adore that dynamic. Of course I want it to end on a shippy note, but I hate fics that have Hermione and Snape inexplicably fall for each other within the first thousand words. She's 60,000 words in and it's still on a student/professor basis, with little moments here and there that make me flail like a crazy fangirl and my heart exploding with joy, but it's not inappropriate or tacky or anything. Just...brilliant. *sighs with pleasure*

My unhealthy yet oh-so-satisfying diet.

This is technically a fail, considering what I'm doing to my body, but it makes me happy... )

I strolled into Jay Jays to kill some time while waiting for the bus…half an hour later, my bus was long gone and I was still trying on different tops. ^_^ It’s been a while since I’ve gotten excited over shopping, there’s been slim pickings here but I really liked the look of the cardi selection. Originally $40, they were on sale at $25- and they’re all exactly what I was looking for, it was just perfect for me! So I walked out of there with three brand new cardigans just in time for winter. ^_^

My father and I spent over two hours in each other's company yesterday , engaging in pleasant conversation and companiable speculation. :O It's unheard of! And what was responsible for this miracle? The series finale of Lost!

We haven't watched it in years, but since it was the 'last ever' ep, we decided to tune in, and the experience was quite- enjoyable, bizarrely. Obviously the moral of the story is that tv can bring together even people that are usually mutually antagonistic, and if I want to- *gasp*- enjoy my father's company, we just need to sit in front of the tv together. *nodnod* Too bad this was a once-in-a-lifetime event...

[Btw, if anyone can explain that mindfrak of a finale, I'd appreciate it- I still don't get what the hell was going on! Muke was like, 'We're still no wiser now than we were five years ago,' lol!]
-

Sucktastic list of fail.

I was supposed to hang out with a friend last Friday but that fell through. I knew I shouldn’t get my hopes up and yet I fall for it every time. I keep thinking I actually matter to someone and then I’m proven wrong. Obviously it’s not worth having friends in real life, it’s just one blow after another to my self-esteem. ;_; I tell myself I'm an awesome person and it's their loss if they don't recognize it, but then why is it always happening to me? Why am I always the one it's so easy to forget about and leave behind? *throws a pity party*
-

Safeway stole $5 from me! The first time I use my card on their self-serve machine and it bloody rips me off! *scowls* Mother and Ma have offered me money to make up for it, but it’s not the same. *pouts* It’s not that I don’t want their money [perish the thought!] but that it doesn’t make up for Safeway ripping me off. >:[
-

Nothing happened with that job interview. *sighs* It’s been ages, so I think they went with someone else. I’m telling myself it's a relief, but I'm kinda disappointed. There goes another chance to be the responsible, productive adult I know is hiding somewhere deep inside, oh well.
-

I only have one session left with Sonya. *sadface* I was really enjoying these past sessions and I’m going to miss her. >_<

Though she joked, ‘You could get a job and then come back and see me.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, having the job would probably cause the stress that would make me need to see you!’

She’s been so lovely, it’ll be sad after my last session. *pouts* But $150 an hour? Pfft. So not happening on my dime.
-

Only I am lame enough to get hostile with an old lady. Okay, technically, there was no overt display of hostility except for the daggers I shot from my eyes, but she had it coming. >:[

I laughed afterwards, but man, I was seething with suppressed anger at the time )

As with any non-canon couple that faces the obstacle of a canon pairing, a lot of Snape/Hermione fics have to deal with the R/Hr issue. I've seen so many reasons for their  breakup- he falls in love with someone else, he cheats on her, he's threatened by her ambitions, she's fed up with him living off her without pulling his own weight, etc. etc.

The most unrealistic I've come across is the wife-beater!Ron stereotype, wtf? I don't like this kid, but if one of the two was going to be physically abusive, it'd be the chick that sent a flock of magical canaries to peck the living crap out of him and left him with wounds for weeks afterwards, right?

But the best resolution I've ever seen to their so-called 'relationship', without demonizing or vilifying either character, allowing them to remain friends afterwards, is from a fic called Arachne. It's also the funniest and most in character...!

Snippet of Hilarious Awesome )

Bwahaha! Epic! As much as I don't like this pairing, I really can't stand it when shippers go Ron!bashing and make it all bitter and ugly [even if that is actually in character] because I just want everyone to be friends, instead of ruining years' of history. So having the break-up due to her Animagus form...hee! :D

I know I have a bunch of Hermione and/or Snape fans on my flist, so I’m going to appeal for some help. If you have any links to some pretty wallpapers, can you share them with me? I’d like to get a t-shirt printed for each of them, since they’re such a massive part of my life and I’d like to wear my heart on my sleeve, so to speak. :P [Yes, I know I butchered that metaphor, just go with it]

Here are some examples of previous prints I had done for SGA and CM )
Please keep in mind that these are going to be worn in public, so you know. Keep it PG. :P

Also, while I have your attention, if you have any ideas for something character-appropriate that I could use in place of the ‘post a comment/X-number comments’, let me know. I suck at that. It took me months to come up with TLW-relevant phrases, and I’m so stuck with HP.

This shouldn't disappoint me so much but it does- Rachelle Lefevre is dumped from Twilight, so that Bryce Dallas Howard can take over the role of Victoria in Eclipse. One of the best scenes in New Moon was with Rachelle, running through the woods to Hearing Damage [epic song!] and pwning the werewolves. She was just kickass as Victoria, and I hate to see her leave. I think it’s supremely sucky that BDH turned down the role initially because it wasn’t big enough for her, apparently, but now that the franchise is so huge and the role is expanded in the third book, now it’s good enough for her. Poor Rachelle. *squishes her*

I was surprised and pleased at this short one-line review to an old ST:V fic I wrote years ago.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2655392/1/The_Early_Bird
This story makes me love Seven even more ^-^

How shocking! When I think back to my Voyager days, I mainly recall hating Seven’s guts. Heck, I actually wrote a parody fic killing her off just to get it off my chest! So the review made me decide to re-read my own fic. *winces*

I so wanted to be able to claim I wrote it around, like, 13, as an excuse for any suckitude, but I was actually 17 and that’s less excusable. Still, re-reading it wasn’t as horrible as I had feared. It was- decent, I’ll give myself some credit. Not entirely in character, but I didn’t butcher them. I kinda- liked it. How unexpected…

Oh, I miss the days when I wrote prolific amounts of fic. I mean, a 5000 one-shot, that’s just unbelievable, I’m way too lazy to write half that these days!

Doctor Who:

Brief thoughts on the first two episodes. ) ---

After watching The Red Box, during which my appreciation for The Mentalist took yet another beating, with the introduction of the ghastly Madeline Hightower [honestly, what a high school mean girl she is, she's not so much a character as a caricature conjured up to inject some unnecessary tension and conflict into the plot but resoundingly fails to enhance the show in any way at all], I yearningly thought back to the magnificient Agent Shaw of Castle's epic two-parter, Tick Tick Tick and Boom.

‘I will bring you love,’ said the young lover,
‘A glad light to dance in your dark eye.
Pendants I will bring of the white bone,
And gay parrot feathers to deck your hair.’

But she only shook her head.

‘I will put a child in your arms,’ he said.
‘Will be a great headman, great rain-maker.
I will make remembered songs about you
That all tribes in all the wandering camps
Will sing forever.’

But she was not impressed.

‘I will bring you the still moonlight of the lagoon
And steal for you the singing of all the birds;
I will bring down the stars from heaven to you,
And put the bright rainbow into your hand.’

‘No,’ she said, ‘bring me tree-grubs.’

Check out my pretty new bookmark!

I'm reading a few fantasy novels atm, and since they're 'serious books with plotty content and some literary merit', rather than my usual trashy romances, I went in search of an appropriate bookmark, and I am so giddy to have found Hermione! It was so cool- this was the last one of the shelf, I lucked out! And lol, there was only ONE Hermione left, but like, 10-15 each of Ron and Harry still sitting there. Guess we know who's more popular!

The rest of the range can be viewed here. I'm more than a little miffed that they have frakking UMBRIDGE, and like, SHACKLEBOLT who is pretty much irrelevant in the big picture, but not Snape! Gah! *sulks* I want a Snape bookmark, damn it.

But still. *strokes pretty Hermione bookmark* Whee! ^_^

If I could be anyone in the whole wide world, I would so want to be Emma Watson. Not only is she funny, gorgeous and talented, but look at this:

“Two Harry Potter stars were the highest paid actors last year, according to a Top 40 list in Vanity Fair magazine’s latest edition. Emma Watson topped the list of actresses for 2009 with earnings of about $35 million for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, parts I and II. She was placed 14th overall behind film producers and directors, and beat older and more experienced actresses including Cameron Diaz, Sarah Jessica Parker and Katherine Heigl.

Her co-star Daniel Radcliffe was the highest paid actor for 2009, at No. 6 on the male list, with earnings of about $47 million.”

HOT DAMN. Life must be pretty awesome when you're Emma Watson. *sighs wistfully*

This calls for a picspam!

New ship:

*clings to luxuria_oceanus* I know you’ll be the only one to understand me- but I’ve managed to find yet another oh-so-wrong-but-so-damn-compelling ship…

...from Push, Nick/Cassie.
I feel like such a pervert...*wibbles* I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S WRONG WITH ME. The age difference is not the issue so much as that she’s a kid. But jeez, I defy anyone to watch the movie and come away without feeling that Nick and Cassie have more chemistry than him and Kira.

[Btw, to anyone who’s watched it- how much is Kira’s power like Kahlan’s Confessor powers? Except Kira is stronger and can take over heaps of people at a time without much effort. She also have more fine-tuned control over them; Kahlan will tell a Confessed to do what she says, but I haven't seen her literally control their movements like a machine the way Kira does *iz in awe*]

This wonderful essay by profshallowness delves into my brain and explains everything neatly and concisely and kinda makes me feel less scummy about the whole thing. Especially this:

"Its the dynamic where the girl is special (different to her peers, perhaps even aged by her experiences) and worms her way into an older gruff protector-type's affections, with lots of extreme danger being lobbed at them."

That is so my type- is it my fault that the writers decided to replicate that dynamic between an inappropriate pair of characters? NO. *nods and runs*

Vidspam:

Anyway, the vidder of the following had this to say: Oh the sickness of this ship, it kills me. But they're awesome.’ *snickersnort*

marguerite_krux: (Default)
Just finished reading It's Elemental, My Dear Snape, an utterly brilliant SS/HG fic by cathedral carver. Perfection in five chapters. It's basically a list of the things I most love about this ship and the plot developments I most want to see all fused together and creating this one divine fic. At about 25, 000 words, it's over too soon- I'm greedy, I wish it was an epic!- but its sheer excellence keeps me from complaining. I just feel so giddy and breathless and squeeful! It's beautifully written, the prose is sparse but conveys so much all the same, and Snape and Hermione are just perfectly in character, and there is this tenuous bond and growing affection and then angst and heartbreak and- GUH. *heart explodes* An absolutely gorgeous ending. God, it makes me so happy!

---
Excerpt- 'everything has been figured out, except how to live. Pay attention, there's a test later...' )
---

Speaking of happy-making things, I think I've babbled enough before about cleolinda's epic Twilight recaps, y/y? I always wished there was an equivalent for Harry Potter, more specifically, for the epic fail of Deathly Hallows. And what do you know, I just discovered it! Daniel Hemmens wrote a really funny and insightful critique of the series: part 1, part 2, part 3 and part 4. Lots of intelligent analysis and giggle-inducing irritation at ridiculous things I hadn't even noticed before. [I was too busy being traumatized to pay such close attention]
Anyway, chapter one is called The Dark Lord Ascending although it should more properly be called "The Dark Lord Sitting In A Dining Room And Being A Bit Mean To The Malfoys But Basically Doing Nothing."

Fans of the series will of course be intimately familiar with scenes of Voldemort Doing Nothing. He's been at it for three books now. This chapter is particularly full of fine examples of the Dark Lord's sinister aptitude for inactivity.

In addition, because my life is always super amazing before everything goes to pieces, I found the Deathly Hallows Sporking Community. Win! Why on earth did I not search for this earlier?!

Snippets of hilarious win )

I just about died laughing. I can almost forgive JKR for that immense suckitude just for the giggles I'm getting out of the sporkage now. *ponders* Actually, no, I still want to slap her for failing so hard. But I might be able to avoid kicking her while she's down. Might.

I mean, the woman has literally given me nightmares. I dreamt my parents were making me go camping for a few weeks. :O *iz aghast* Damn her and that Camping Trip from Hell, I swear, I was nearly sobbing when I woke up. 'But I can't leave civilization! Electricity! What about tv, what about my laptop? The INTERNET? How will I survive?!'
---

I’ve made the obvious Castle/Mentalist comparison before- straightlaced, tough-talking female cops teaming with roguishly charming and often infuriating, meddling civilian consultants. But when I watched Castle 2x13, I noticed a different similarity:

Between Jane/Beckett- no, hear me out! )

Gah. So pissed off. >:[ I know in the grand scale of things, this is a tiny insignificant thorn in my paw, but as it seems I'm never satisfied without something to whinge over...

I aced the SSHG quiz last week, and won the privilege of selecting the topic of the next quiz. But I didn't get the email til Thursday, when I wasn't at uni, and didn't have a chance to reply to it til Friday. At which time I'm told that it's too late and the quiz has already been formulated because I took too long to reply to a PM that was sent the day before! [The other time I won the quiz-selection right, I got the PM on Tuesday, so I'm thinking the lateness of the PM was more to blame than anything]

It wouldn't bug me so much if it weren't for the fact that the topic ended up being 'Major Character Death'. I LOATHE character deaths. I mean, seriously cannot stand fics that kill off one or both characters of my OTP, they rank below rape!fics, which tells you how strongly I feel about this. So yeah. Not amused.

I read this awesome fic the other day, and as usual, I checked out its reviews to see whether other people shared my opinion.

I was startled to find that a frakking fandom war had been waged over this fic, and looked up the details, to find that people were accusing one member of my ship of raping the other. *jaw drop* I've read rape!fics, oh, too many, and this was nothing like that at all, so I was greatly confuzzled.

Hypothetical scenario:

Character X and Character Y are at a party. Both are drinking. Compelled by liquid courage, X approahces Y to engage in flirtatious banter and winds up propositioning Y. Y accepts. X pauses for a moment, shaking off teh tipsy gleefulness to consider that Y would normally not agree to such a proposition. But Y is enthusiastic and willingly consents, so X shrugs off that moment of doubt and the two waltz off to enjoy a 'private celebration'.

Is this rape?
I wouldn't think so, otherwise- considering how many people have drunken sex with unsuitable people and regret it afterwards [I know people who've done this]- there'd be a lot more lawsuits happening. The facts at the time of this incident were pretty clear: Y voluntarily agreed, X did not employ coercion or date-rape drugs, so...

[which reminds me of this off-color joke I really should be appalled by: 9 out of 10 Rohypnol users agree that the fun is not in the chase. *winces* Oh, that's awful. But- I snickered. *facepalm* I'm a horrible person]

For the curious, the fic in question is Accountable by Dyce. Super awesome. *adores it*

It's never the procuring of cards that's the problem, it's figuring out what to write. I spent about half an hour per card, agonizing over word choice, referring to my dictionary to make sure I wasn't making any idiotic errors, looking up synonyms, and then miming writing out the lines to make sure I had enough space [odakota_rose, yours will be the notable exception, lol, I totally didn't plan it very well]- all this fretting and nerve-wracking tension before I ever set pen to paper! OMG, so you know how we moved into our own house a few months ago? Well, it's sort of a WiP- the house is pretty much set, except for some window tinting and such minor surface things, but the surrounding terrain is pretty much just mud and weeds, so we've got landscaper people coming in, right? They're totally unreliable [although thankfully less homicidally inclined than the workers on CM this week *shivers*], they keep scheduling a time to come in and then postponing for some reason.

Well, out of nowhere, they turned up this morning. And I only realized they were around when a construction dude wandered past the window while I was in my bra. *flails* Lately, mother's left the kitchen curtains drawn because it's way too hot and sunny, but of course, the one day she leaves the curtains open would be when I'm in a state of dishabille and a guy happens to walk past! Okay, so he wasn't looking in otherwise I'd be a hell of a lot more embarrassed but I nearly had a heart attack. :O

Imagine the Psycho music from the bath-tub scene, that was the soundtrack for this particular moment. Minus the hysterical girly shrieking. I thought a tactical retreat would be more effective than standing rooted to the spot, screaming. [God, I hate when people do that on tv- sure, honey, finding a body is really traumatic but why don't you shut your mouth in case you draw the killer's attention and just run and find help, y/y?]

a) they're outdated [I have a problem with shoddy special effects, okay? I can forgive it with TLW, just as I forgive every lapse in logic and thwarting of common sense because it is utter fantastic crack]
b) I don't really know or care about the actors from back then- being a fangirl means I like to follow my favorites around, seeing them is a pleasure in itself, even if the movie's not so hot, and
c) with some of the really old ones, I'm just not from the appropriate generation to enjoy that style, you know, the tonal inflections, the pacing of speech, the particular way they act, it just pains me. Argh.
The exception to the 'no-old-school movie' style )

My point is, remakes/sequels open up great movie concepts to a new generation, even if it pisses off a lot of faithful fans in the process. But it's not really for them, not the die-hards that can't stand the idea of their addiction being tampered with, it's for those with an interest in the modern product and for us newbies. I couldn't get through ten minutes of Judy Garland in Wizard of Oz without gritting my teeth and wanting to kick something, so I, for one, am looking forward to this modernization.

Especially since I loved Zooey Deschanel's DG in Tin Man.
How can you resist the wonder and thrill of it all?! )

FINALLY.

About damn time!

Bloody hell! I had to go through about a million quizzes before I finally scored as Snape! I identify with him more than Hermione- I love her to bits, but I'm not as nice as she is. I'm always being told how sarcastic and moody I am. 'tis a character flaw I cannot be bothered trying to correct. *shrugs*
