Things fall apart. In case you guys were wondering where I was [*squishes woodchoc_magnum*], I've been trying to put the pieces of my life back together. It's been emotionally exhausting but creepily okay in the end. The worst happened and it didn't. I'm ten kinds of confused right now.

Honesty is the best policy, but insanity is a better defense... )

New ship: Sylar/Claire. *headdesk* How is it that my ships become more and more- er, dubious as time passes on? And the chicks remain relatively pure and moralistic and straight-forward [okay, so Hermione scarred a girl for life, that's terrible but I blame it on JKR's shoddy characterization], while the guys are...hmm. From Snape's 'technically a good guy but quite cruel and nasty' to Jareth's 'I steal children and make you go on perilous quests to retrieve them' to Sylar's, um...'I kill people. For fun'. Yeahhh...

Plus, with the first two ships, if you were so inclined, the characters could get together without too much dilemma [what's the stigma of a former teacher/student relationship or centuries-long age difference compared with dating a serial killer?] But with Sylar and Claire, you can't really see these two hooking up without either serious character tweaking or dub-con. Which really rules this pairing, like, 90% of the fics I've come across involve dub-con. So wrong...but I can't help it, these two fascinate me too much. Taking the kink of characters who hate each other a little too far, methinks...*eyeroll*

LotS spoiler woe

I am enraged! *snarls* )

PS. How old is Kahlan? I’ve been wondering. All this talk lately of how I enjoy don’t mind a good age difference…but it only works with younger female/older male couples. I’m not a fan of older women with younger men. Not that I have anything against it [I like Demi and Ashton] but I don’t ship it.

So, Richard’s about 20-23...‘What have you been doing the last 20 years?’ Kahlan asks despairingly of Zedd. And Darken Rahl is all, ‘For 23 years, I’ve slept peacefully…’ before his blissful dreams were rent by the resurfacing of the Seeker. Do we know how old Kahlan is?

Alice in Wonderland!

The reviews have been lukewarm at best, but I was psyched up for it.

'Have I gone mad?/I'm afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are...' )

I watched a few of Mia Wasikowska’s eps from In Treatment this week. She’s a really talented actress [sooo much better in this than Alice, I gotta say]. The whole ep is structured around two characters sitting in a room...just talking. No special effects, not even that much music, no real action...and it’s still utterly compelling. She gripped my attention from the first moment she stalked into the room and flung herself down on the couch, and I couldn’t stop watching her. She’s just so expressive and really something amazing to watch in action.

Oh, and you come across fandom in the most random places! In one of her sessions, Sophie brought in her diary to shed light on herself as a kid. ‘Dear Hermione,’ she reads, explaining, ‘I pretended that I was writing to Hermione Granger...’ :D Just like me with Xena! Oh, yeah, I totally used to make-believe that Xena was my friend...

Sesson Snippet )

Who’s giving the new Doctor Who a chance? I gotta say, I’m less than impressed. I fell for Nine, in all his angsty neurotic glory...

I know Ten was a ball and just so much fun, but what can I say, the broody, damaged types do it for me. :P *luffs Nine*

And now we have Eleven…who looks like a schoolboy, I mean, really? Barely looks like he's out of his teens, he so cannot carry off that suit without looking like a kid playing dress-up. Still, his side-kick’s gorgeous. I’m so tempted just for the eye-candy, but…I have this ridiculous tendency to get emotionally invested without my say-so and I’ve danced this number too often to risk my heart when I know it ain’t gonna have a happy ending. I hate the 'revolving door' cast for this series and I don't know if it's worth it to watch in case I get attached and then weep buckets when they get swapped out for a new pair.

Oh, I don’t knoooow. *vacillates*

Ugh, I'm so bitter about not getting to go to the most recent con, but this pic with Christopher Heyerdahl was the highlight of last year.

'That he caved to your demands suggests he may be spending too much time with mortals, learning their ways and capricious emotions. It is time he remembers how to be fey.'

'I know not.'

The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker

Darkness was behind. In the sunlight ahead, out on the rocks, a figure reached toward her in anguish.

“No.” She shook her head. “Don’t take me just yet; give me one more hour…”

“Your time has come, love,” said the eerie man and his cold hand seized her shoulder to lead her into the darkness.

So funny! This dude's impersonation of Alan Rickman is just spot on and hilarious. *gigglefit* ^_^

Happymaking List of Win.

#1. OMG OMG OMG. I renewed my account for another year and just found out I got five userpic spaces! I totally forgot about the bonus userpics, this is so awesome! Just in time for me to express my love for my new fandom, too! *giddybounces*

#2. Ha, I think I've come across a term that near-accurately describes my taste in ships: Foe Yay. *gigglesnort*
Foe Yay implies that there are certain sexual emotions that have been sublimated by the characters, in this case, two nemeses. The idea being that because of their defined roles, the two characters must fight, but would subconsciously rather be doing something else that starts with an "F".
Okay, so that's more applicable to anime and comic books where the hero/villain battle it out for ten million seasons, but it does address my OTPs' initial interactions very well- I do adore shipping two people that seem to absolutely loathe each other at first. :D Every single ship of mine has started off snapping and snarling at each other before ultimately deciding they do kinda have a thing for one another.

Just a brief snapshot )

#3. Saw Up in the Air the other day.

It was supposed to be just the adult women, but I guess mother took pity on me and let me tag along with her, Ma and my aunt. Aren't I special? *preens*

My thoughts )

#4. Sense and Sensibility. Pretty decent movie, though I admit I'd never pay attention to it were it not for Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon. I always thought his relationship with Marianne got shortchanged- one minute, she's mooning over the dastardly Willoughby, the next she's with Brandon. Imagine my delight at stumbling across Colonel Brandon’s Diary by Amanda Grange.

I have to say, my first reaction was ‘who is the dude on the cover and why is it not Alan Rickman?!’

Because I am utterly lacking in bias when it comes to my choice of cover model, lol.

'To your sister I wish all imaginable happiness; to Willoughby that he may endeavour to deserve her...' )

#5. How do you disable author alerts on I think I should, before I get into more trouble. *facepalm*

Apart from the annoyance of getting messages for fics you're not interested in, there's the threat of being taken over by a new fandom if one isn't careful- and I am so weak that way. I kept getting random emails about some author posting Labyrinth fics- I deleted each one, but the name imprinted on my brain, and now and then I'd wonder what the big deal was about this Sarah and Jareth [it was his name that caught my eye, since it reminded me of Pretender's Jarod] and why the hell that author wasn't writing for the fandom I put them on alert for, right?

The other day, I wiki'd it, figured 'oh, teenage girl takes on Goblin King in epic fantasy quest to save her brother from his evil clutches'. Hmm, it has potential, why not? I was intrigued, since it's so rare for fantasy movies to be made these days starring girls, let alone letting them be the sole protagonist instead of sharing the limelight with an undeserving, less capable and immature guy. *coughHARRYPOTTERcough*

And now...I am hopelessly enchanted. I haven't seen the movie yet, but dear god, the fanfic is incredible. I am so in love!

'Everything that you wanted, I have done. You asked that the child be taken; I took him. You cowered before me; I was frightening. I have reordered time. I have turned the world upside down, and I have done it all for you!' )

But yes, I fully realize that my ships have officially become creepy. woodchoc_magnum and I were talking a while back about 'appropriate age-differences'; she was for them, I do I put it so that I don't sound like a perverted sicko? Um...more open-minded, shall we say?

And on the bright side, doesn't this make Hermione/Snape look more normal in comparison? :P No? I'm just twisted, end of story? Righty then...

30 Day Meme: snurched from labrt2004.

Day 03 → Your favourite television programme

I'm gonna go with Castle. I love having a show-approved ship, instead of fighting against TPTB, it's such a relief when they agree that my couple is meant to be. I would have said Mentalist just a few months ago, but I love that the whole team gets to shine here, with Beckett actually cracking cases along with Castle instead of standing back and admiring his genius the way Lisbon's forced to, plus as mother says, 'There's a lot more blatant UST'. *g* I love it when my mother talks like a fangirl!

This was the first Labyrinth vid I saw, and convinced me that I definitely needed to join in the fandom. It's so very well constructed, especially considering the limited amount of material to work with, and it's so full of emotion and thrills and excitement, I love it!

marguerite_krux: (Default)
I'm excited! I'm now a beta for this SSHG fic, The Professor's Discretion, mwahaha!
I was moping at the diminishing amount of fic left to read, which seriously sends me into a depression every time I finish gorging on my new obsession's available fic [it was painful post-TLW, let me tell you, 'coz at least with newer ones like Mentalist and CM, etc. I'm fairly sure people will post sometime in the future but that hope ain't there with older fandoms *sniffles*] and now I have something new to fixate on. My OCD is pleased at the chance to nitpick like crazy, hee. Editing is so much easier than writing, I gotta say. >:D

Since I haven't tried to brainwash anyone into my beloved ship lately: [except odakota_rose. *eyes hopefully*]

A hilarious scene between headmistress!Hermione and Snape, from the amazing Splintered and Broken:

The Interview )

I usually don't read post-Voldemorte-wins fics on general principle. [It's a category bursting with rape!fics, which tend to put me off. It's usually exploited by writers who want to indulge in dark, perverted abuse and glorious sadism, so kthxbai]

But this fic is so brilliant in the way it draws parallels between the victorious!Voldemorte era and the Ministry era, the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix [one man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter, y/y?], and familiar characters are recast in different roles. 'A lot of this story is about reoccurring patterns in a new generation', as the author says- there is Hermione as the new Dumbledore, pulling strings behind the scenes and coordinating the resistance, there is a new Severus, a new Sirius and new Harry an unexpected but poignant way.

This fic corrects all the gender!fail of the HP!verse. It wasn't intentional, apparently, but women ended up being cast in most of the crucial roles and not in a gratuitous 'super!perfect!role-model!strong-female-character' way, not the irritating 'women are superior and males are not fit to lick their shoes' way, but in believable extensions of their canon personalities, only with all their potential explored and fulfilled. I mean, minor character Lavendar is still opposed to Hermione but written in a way that makes her POV understandable and sympathetic.

And by far, the most rewarding take is on Ginny. She's cast as this tragic character, who was never fully understood in canon, who had much more depth than we ever realized, who hid her darker streak and played the innocent because it was what Harry needed. And it's so beautifully done, it hurts.

Re: Ginny )

Last week was a lot of fun, for a few different reasons. For one, I finally got to hang out with Jacob, an old high school friend. He and his sister, Katherine, are the only friends I've managed to make and keep for more than a year, although it's unfortunate that we only get together three or four times a year, but I'll take what I can get.

cut for trivial chatter )

The other high point of my week was seeing New Moon.

Surprising, I'm sure, given that I think most of you know my feelings about Twilight. Safe to say…I’m not a fan. I’m an anti-fan, actually, I find a great deal of amusement in reading essays and sporkings by people who tear it apart and expose its massive fail with wit and snark a-plenty. But the movie was a great deal of fun, even if I still have no more respect for the books than I ever did. *shrugs*

Movie review )

marguerite_krux: (Default)
I've had so many family functions lately, it's exhausting. The past three weekends have been devoted to some occasion or another. And we've got a dinner this weekend in Melbourne for a relative I don't even know that well but am compelled to attend and socialize with anyway. *groans*

Anyway, we just had the twins' 21 birthday dinner- despite the fact that their birthday was in December, and was already celebrated back then. Their father just came over for a visit from Samoa for Netty's grad and so they decided to have a dual grad/birthday celebration so that he didn't feel like he missed out because he couldn't fly over for their actual birthday. Even though Amu's birthday was last Friday, so that would've been a more timely event to celebrate but we didn't end up doing anything for that...probably celebrate it on Christmas. *eyeroll*

Family stuff )

My friends and I managed to get kicked out of Westfield by the security guards. *eyeroll*

OMG, such hardcore rebels. *snickers* )

My parents are super paranoid and I try to humor them although it really irritates me how insanely over-protective they can be. So I decided not to tell them about this drunk guy that spontaneously jumped in the car with us. We were on our way to see Star Trek [to much moaning and groaning from the non-sci-fi-fans of the group] and this guy just pushed his way into the car beside me.

I thought from his familiar manner that he was a friend of someone in the car so I didn't make a fuss. The guy reeked of alcohol- he generously offered to share, though we declined- and after some polite, if rambling, conversation, he announced he'd join us. Katherine actually started pulling away from the curb when he changed his mind at the last minute and hopped out again. So random!

After he left, we realized that none of us had any idea who this guy was, and she had been totally ready to take a stranger along to the movies with us. *facepalm* Okay, so he was a harmless drunk and I wasn't really scared or anything, but the was so easy for him to get in the car, it just freaks me out that he could've been the less pleasant 'angry drunk' or like, a serial killer seeking a carful of young victims...*shudders* Doesn't help I just saw that Criminal Minds ep where the unsub was randomly slaughtering people in their cars... *meep*

The Star Trek movie- COMPLETELY AWESOME. If you haven't seen it, YOU NEED TO GO DO THAT RIGHT NOW.

It was funny, I kept thinking that Kirk reminded me of someone and then halfway through, it hit me...CAM MITCHELL. They bear a superficial resemblence, and every word out of his mouth, his intonation, his mannerisms, it all reminded me of Cam's attitude.

Also, THIS!

No wonder Cam and Chris's Kirk were intertwined in my head...Cam played pseudo!Kirk in 200! [This scene should've been longer- why couldn't they cut that damn puppet skit and beefed up this and the Farscape spoofs? *pouts*]

Thoughts on the movie )

Saw Race to Witch Mountain on the weekend with Netty. *wriggles* Thoroughly enjoyed it and I am totally getting it on dvd- or making someone buy it for me. :D

I'm not even pretending it has award-winning merit of any kind, but who cares? The movies that win Oscars are generally weepy and tragic and involve people suffering hardship and loss and characters DYING.

This? Was just a lot of fun, kept me giggling throughout and is exactly my kind of favorite light-hearted popcorn entertainment.

@ [personal profile] chibi_tenshi24 - you totally need to see this movie. I loved it, 'tis awesome, YOU MUST WATCH. ^_^
marguerite_krux: (Default)

Friday night was fun.  I am so easy to please, lol. It’s the little things that matter- chilling at the cousins’ house, eating pepperoni pizza for the first time in like, TWO YEARS while reading one of Pam’s TLW fics and comment!spamming with [ profile] odakota_rose . Seriously, this is all I need in life.

Saturday was more intense. A movie and dinner with two friends. I don’t do well in groups and yes, two people is one more than I can am comfortable with- I tend to fade into the background and just sit there and listen. *sighs* Assertiveness, not my thing.

*DUPLICITY- a relatively fun and entertaining movie* )

1. Saw Made of Honor last week. It exceeded my expectations, although that wasn’t hard to do, considering I went in there with none at all. I hated the set-up, cringed at the execution, wanted to stomp all over the predictable ending…but it was done with good grace and unexpected moments of real humor and the main characters were actually…not hard to like. They were quite charming and sympathetic figures, surprisingly, considering that McDreamy’s playing a total manwhore [he’s stereotyped now- DOOM].

2. The greatest thing is that I was trying to recruit everyone to see Iron Man, but it was for Amu’s birthday and he wanted to see it Gold Class with his girlfriend, hence Made of Honor [Miss Pettigrew’s not exactly a dude’s movie]. I was dejected at the time, but the next night, at Katherine’s birthday dinner, Jacob was all, ‘Yeah, I’m going to the movies afterwards…’ *pointed look* ‘…I’m going to look like a loser sitting there all by myself…’ HEE! So it worked out in the end. Though my stomach nearly exploded with my second jumbo popcorn in a 24 hour period, lol. We only got through half, but I always say it’s better to have too much than too little. Seriously, if I run out of snacks, I go NUTS and can’t concentrate on the rest of the movie because of cravings.

3. Passion Fish turned up in my mail today! Who knew the post could be so efficient?! *glees* Damn it, why is my laptop not fixed yet so I can cap the prettiness? But still, NEW MARY FIX TRUMPS ALL CONCERNS.
marguerite_krux: (Default)

This was supposed to be about the fact that I finally watched ‘When the Bullet Hits the Bone’.

I somehow ended up rambling about a few different movies on the way, but then, who am I if not tangential?

Torri was awesome as usual [though does anyone seriously believe I have an unbiased opinion on her performance? No? Didn’t think so…], it was just the movie and the drivel it calls a plot that I had a problem with.

Disclaimer:You may wonder why I bothered to discuss this movie at all, since I'm tearing it apart. Well...I don't know, I have an analytical mind, and I can't ever come to a conclusion about something without debating every possible angle. It's fun. It cements my certainty in my position. So let me babble. XP
