How do you repel a guy without being totally rude about it? I feel like such a shrew, but this guy at the library keeps talking to me and it's driving me nuts!

Cut for bitchiness )----

RL issues:

I've never kept much of a division between my LJ and my real life. My identity is so interwined with the life I lead on the internet that trying to keep the two apart would be a headache. I know some people fiercely guard their identities in case their journals are exposed and it undermines their credibility in their everyday lives, but that never even occurred to me, and it's probably a little to worry about it now. [It'll suck if I want to run for Prime Minister in the future, lol, and something I said here torpedoes my campaign]

I considered the issue of online life affecting RL with a whole new perspective after Age columnist Catherine Deveny was fired because of some offensive and tasteless tweets she posted.

Jeez, people, you have to be more careful! )-

Crazy Cabbie

While the public's shredding Catherine Deveny to bits for her tacky tweets, it's amazing to me that there's an equal amount of support for the taxi driver that had a 'brain snap' that resulting in him chasing a car of teens, ramming it once it blew a tire and then getting out to smash it to bits with a change dispenser and tyre lever.

Seriously, there's pages of letters in the newspaper hailing him a hero! WTF?!

He's a frakking psycho, he should be locked up! )-

Ban the Burqua?

The main camps of opinion seem to be:

a) Do it now before someone uses the burqua to conceal a bomb and people get hurt or killed.

b) It's hardly like we have burqa-clad gangs roaming the country, whereas thugs in trackies and hoodies seem to make a weekly appearance on Crime Stoppers- should we ban those, too?

c) The burquas are better at Hungry Jack's.

Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching.

Fringe!

I am so in love with this show! It has intelligent, fascinating plots [I know, me watching for plot, ridiculous, right?! But it's true!] and charismatic, talented actors that breathe life into these wonderful, interesting, compelling characters [especially Walter, with his bizarre remarks and quirky foibles, hee].

And omg, it treats the audience like smart people, dropping little clues to allow us to develop theories about what's going on, hints about what happened to Olivia in her childhood, what happened to Peter in his childhood. They created a trail of breadcrumbs but weren't cruel and keeping us hanging for seasons on end, oh no! TPTB here think we deserve some reward for the time and emotional investment we make in the show. The last few episodes of the second season have just blown my mind, it is absolutely brilliant what they've been doing, the payoff in that resolution of the arc they built is so emotional and heart-wrenching and perfect.

And I cannot tell you how much I love Nina. The way she's her own person, this full-developed, three-dimensional character with her own agenda and motives. So many times, we get cardboard cut-outs as the plot dictates [someone for the protagonist to clash with, someone to provide them with assistance, blah blah blah], bland paper-dolls that prop up the storyline but not Nina! You could take away Olivia and the others and she would still exist in her own world, complete with a history and goals in life separate from providing a foil for the main characters, it's awesome.

Oh, hell. I have a job interview. *flails*

Kill me now... )-

Before I could apply for this job, I needed referees for my resume and…none of my lecturers/tutors from uni would be able to vouch for me. I basically just wagged classes or I never spoke up, so yeah, uni was a bust. Which meant...I had to go back further in time, to when I actually attended classes and got on well iwth my teachers...

A morning back at high school )-

OMG! As usual, I’m the last to know, but thanks to weird_fin, I learnt about LJ’s new a la carte userpics deal! Damn Paypal takes a week to add funds to my account, but I am going icon crazy once I get my gazillion new userpic spaces! *eyes icon collection greedily* Ohh, all the pretties that I liked but never had space for! Their time has come!

But I am confuzzled. Can anyone explain this to me in simple English?

“The number of packages you select in the Shop defines how many packages you wish to have, rather than how many additional packages you wish to purchase. So, if you already have one package of userpics and then you choose ‘1 package’ in the Shop, only the time of your 1 package of userpics will be extended, rather than the quantity of userpics. If you’d like to have 2 or 3 packages in total, then you need to select either '2 packages' or '3 packages' plus the duration of time. Please note that the total amount of time purchased for all userpic packages will be redistributed so all packages expire at the same time.”
So, the userpics I already have- do they count as a package? As in, if I pay for one package, am I only paying to extend the time during which they are valid? And if I actually want extra userpic space, must I pay for two packages? I’d be pretty bummed if I thought I was going to have a few hundred icons but it turned out I’d just renewed their duration.

Also, I only got a paid account for the extra userpics. Now that you can have tons of icons without being a paid member, if I let my paid account lapse- do I still get to keep the icons I paid for? Or do I have to pay for them again?

Legend of the Seeker.

I admit, the first time I saw Sister Verna, I wasn't too impressed. I was prepared to be bored, rather, although slightly gleeful at the opportunity for Cara/Kahlan bonding with Richard interrupting all the time. [That paid off all right, beyond my expectations!]

But Verna won me over with the way she didn't fawn over Richard like so many others have, none of this 'oh, the wisdom of the Seeker' this and 'praise the Seeker' that. She was matter-of-fact and very realistic about his capabilities and wisdom- or lack thereof. Brutally honest with him about her opinion of him, and I grew to love her more and more as she turned out to be my on-screen proxy. Seriously, every dark thought I've had about Richard's stupidity, she's voiced to his face, it's been awesome!

So, in her honor:

It was completely embarrassing and yet I couldn’t suppress my squeals each time I saw a dark shape scuttling around, tail slithering behind it. *twitches*

I absolutely loved this fantasy novel, the name of which shall not be revealed in case I inadvertently spoil one of you, and was so into the series that I contemplated buying the next book [or harassing the library into buying it for me].

When I spied it in Borders, I figured I’d take a peek at the final chapter to see if the chick ends up with the guy I wanted- well, win/lose. MAJOR loss. While they do hook up, and she even becomes pregnant, the very last words are ominous: ‘And then he knew no more’. Um, WTF? This is how it ends?

It could be in the less-scary ‘and then he fell asleep and knew no more til the following day when he woke up in bed with the Love of His Life’, but…considering he was in a duel where he sustained numerous wounds…and also the way it reminds me of this craptastic scene: ‘And then Snape moved no more…’ Yeah, depressing. It sucks so hard it reaches back in time to retroactively ruin my enjoyment of the first book. *pouts*

New ship: Sylar/Claire. *headdesk* How is it that my ships become more and more- er, dubious as time passes on? And the chicks remain relatively pure and moralistic and straight-forward [okay, so Hermione scarred a girl for life, that's terrible but I blame it on JKR's shoddy characterization], while the guys are...hmm. From Snape's 'technically a good guy but quite cruel and nasty' to Jareth's 'I steal children and make you go on perilous quests to retrieve them' to Sylar's, um...'I kill people. For fun'. Yeahhh...

Plus, with the first two ships, if you were so inclined, the characters could get together without too much dilemma [what's the stigma of a former teacher/student relationship or centuries-long age difference compared with dating a serial killer?] But with Sylar and Claire, you can't really see these two hooking up without either serious character tweaking or dub-con. Which really rules this pairing, like, 90% of the fics I've come across involve dub-con. So wrong...but I can't help it, these two fascinate me too much. Taking the kink of characters who hate each other a little too far, methinks...*eyeroll*

LotS spoiler woe

W.T.F.

I am enraged! *snarls* )

PS. How old is Kahlan? I’ve been wondering. All this talk lately of how I enjoy don’t mind a good age difference…but it only works with younger female/older male couples. I’m not a fan of older women with younger men. Not that I have anything against it [I like Demi and Ashton] but I don’t ship it.

So, Richard’s about 20-23...‘What have you been doing the last 20 years?’ Kahlan asks despairingly of Zedd. And Darken Rahl is all, ‘For 23 years, I’ve slept peacefully…’ before his blissful dreams were rent by the resurfacing of the Seeker. Do we know how old Kahlan is?

I watched a few of Mia Wasikowska’s eps from In Treatment this week. She’s a really talented actress [sooo much better in this than Alice, I gotta say]. The whole ep is structured around two characters sitting in a room...just talking. No special effects, not even that much music, no real action...and it’s still utterly compelling. She gripped my attention from the first moment she stalked into the room and flung herself down on the couch, and I couldn’t stop watching her. She’s just so expressive and really something amazing to watch in action.

Oh, and you come across fandom in the most random places! In one of her sessions, Sophie brought in her diary to shed light on herself as a kid. ‘Dear Hermione,’ she reads, explaining, ‘I pretended that I was writing to Hermione Granger...’ :D Just like me with Xena! Oh, yeah, I totally used to make-believe that Xena was my friend...

Who’s giving the new Doctor Who a chance? I gotta say, I’m less than impressed. I fell for Nine, in all his angsty neurotic glory...

I know Ten was a ball and just so much fun, but what can I say, the broody, damaged types do it for me. :P *luffs Nine*

And now we have Eleven…who looks like a schoolboy, I mean, really? Barely looks like he's out of his teens, he so cannot carry off that suit without looking like a kid playing dress-up. Still, his side-kick’s gorgeous. I’m so tempted just for the eye-candy, but…I have this ridiculous tendency to get emotionally invested without my say-so and I’ve danced this number too often to risk my heart when I know it ain’t gonna have a happy ending. I hate the 'revolving door' cast for this series and I don't know if it's worth it to watch in case I get attached and then weep buckets when they get swapped out for a new pair.

Oh, I don’t knoooow. *vacillates*

Fandom yayness:

Surprisingly, I'm reading a Harry Potter fic that isn't SSHG. Quelle surprise! I just devoured 44 chapters of Arsinoe de Blassenville's The Best Revenge. It's a Snape-mentors-Harry story and by god, it sunk its claws into me and would not let me wrest free.

This fic? Is what I wish CANON was like. It's infinitely SUPERIOR to canon and not in a fanfic way, but literally like it could've been published. I would've paid money for this fic, seriously. It fixes everything that I had a problem with in the books and surpasses them in terms of making Harry more likable and sympathetic. The boy actually studies and tries to achieve things and learn spells! Who'da thunk it? Also, Harry genuinely cares about other people and tries to help- canon!Harry is stunningly lacking in empathy or compassion.

And there is character development! *gasps* The amazing thing is that Harry and Draco are friends in this fic but Draco isn't  whitewashed til he's unrecognizable- given his upbringing, he has the same inevitable prejudices and flaws as in canon, but we get to see the positive effect Harry has on him in such a believable way. There is compromise and 'agreeing to disagree' instead of Draco miraculously converting to Muggle-lover in a heartbeat.

The best thing about the fic is the way that kids from all four Houses form friendships, and we have the core quartet that includes Draco and Hermione and Neville and makes it seem realistic that these very different kids would hang out with each other and actually grow to like each other over time, going from distant tolerance to real friendship.

And I won't babble about how much I love Snape in this. *bounces* Just take it as read, yo. ^_^

If anyone knows any epic-length mentor!Snape fics, rec me? Preferably gen!fic with no major ships [especially not involving Hermione, as I doubt there exists a perfect fic that has 'Severitus' plus SSHG]. I don't want to go looking because I'd have to wade through the Snarry fics and my brain does not need to deal with that.

There are a few moronic clichés that make me laugh myself silly or shriek til I’m hoarse every single time.

One of them is the ol’ ‘noble character throws themselves between another character and object of impending death’. Why why WHY, for the love of fandom, do these people hurl themselves through the air? How can they POSSIBLY calculate the correct angle and trajectory and factor in the wind and velocity of the weapon and all that within microseconds?

It just defies belief that this seemingly futile maneuver actually works, time and again! One of these days, I want to see someone pull that stunt, only to have miscalculated and wind up passing before or after the bullet/sword/alternative weapon and land roughly on the ground, winded, only to look up and find that not only did they make a fool of themselves, but the object of their concern got killed anyway. BECAUSE IT’S SO STUPID.

Why not at least launch yourself in the direction of the person you’re trying to protect? That way, even if you judged the distance and speed of the weapon incorrectly, your body will absorb the hit anyway- but in the best case scenario, you knock them out of the way and actually survive in the process!

Of course, the whole point of this maneuver is that the Character Dies Heroically. Which I get and if their number is up, that’s it. But couldn’t they die with a little dignity? Because that just makes me giggle and eyeroll like mad, it doesn’t make me respect them or mourn them to a greater degree.

I recently discovered A Very Potter Musical. I'm not in love with it- I have issues with comedy, it can be mean and I'm too protective of my favorites to be able to cope- but it's a very clever parody and I do enjoy how it mocks canon and how ridiculous the plot is. The following clip contains my favorite song of the whole show: Granger Danger! It's so catchy and I've been singing it over and over...

'I'm falling in love, falling in love, falling in love, I could be falling in love,  falling in love, falling in love with Hermione Granger...'

Draco and Ron are hysterical.

Ron: God, why don't you just give her a break for once, okay, Malfoy?
Draco: Why defending her, Weasley? Have a crush?
Ron: NO, no...why all the insults, Malfoy? Covering up a crush?

And the lyrics!
Ron: Strange how a dress can take a mess and make her nothing less than beautiful to me...
Draco: What? What the hell is this, you expect me to sing about her? Don't care about her. It's just a little make-up, Draco, wake up, you're mistaken...

*gigglefit*

#2. MY FATHER'S GOING TO FIJI FOR A WEEK, WOOHOO!
*happydances* A whole week without him! I am so excited.  ^_^

Yes, it sounds cold, but as much as I appreciate what the man has done for me, he's not easy to live with- FFS, he'll seize on any excuse to get angry; too many pens on my table, the tap not aligned at the proper angle over the sink, the curtains not closed at some arbitrary hour...it's gonna be blissful without him around. *sighs happily*

#3. Guess what? I walked into the library foyer and a desk laden with odds-and-ends caught my eye, with the sign declaring 'Free to good home: be quick before they're binned'. I saw a whole pile of junk and was about to walk off when these stopped me in my tracks.

I read these books hundreds of times in high school, and now I have my own copies! *bounces* I just wish they hadn't put those stickers right over their faces, but what the hell. Free X-files books, omgyay!

#4. ‘k, so why is Alexis wearing a ring on her wedding finger?

Is she hiding something from us? Maybe I’m being dumb and she explained it somewhere along the way and I missed it but wow. Either that’s a promise ring from a boy she’s serious about or she’s disregarding the convention that a person can’t wear a ring on that finger without it meaning something. I occasionally wear one of my rings on my wedding finger- heck, I’m never getting married and I’m running out of fingers, so what the hell?

Craptastic List of Fail.

#1. Oh, dear god. I wasn't going to watch SYTYCD Australia, or at least, not the auditions- but mother had it on and called me, just as a contestant auditioned with a song from the Labyrinth soundtrack.

O.o Freaky, no? The week I fall in love with this movie, some crazy fan shows up with a routine to one of the songs...but holy crap, it sucked SO BAD. I was cringing, this chick just totally made me want to throttle her for giving people another reason to laugh at sci-fi/fantasy fans. *glares* Oh, tv gods, just ONE person I needed to rock the routine so that I could delight in the fandom squee, but no, she made me ashamed to admit to loving that song. Ugh.

#2. Mentalist!fail.

Yes, I know I'm judging it before even seeing what they're going to do with this plot arc. But  after the way the writers resolved the R/vP UST and the Bosco thing...I've lost a lot of faith in them. It's getting way too desperate.

Tough call, there are a lot of books I love. But for the one that combines all the elements that I most adore into one amazing book, I'll say Ilona Andrews- On the Edge. I do love the Kate Daniels books, but this one's romance/fantasy, so I got to feel like I'm reading something more intellectual than my usual trashy romances but still with Rose rocking the feisty banter and reluctant UST and badassery and culminating in a happy fluffy ending. :D

I had a fantastic week over the past week, riding on a wave of euphoria and giddiness. Then I got knocked off and dragged under by the usual unpleasant vagaries of life. Because my joy never lasts long before it gets tainted with some misery. But I use my journal to complain about trivial things too often- now I shall celebrate some of the small but happymaking things:

 > Watched CM ep 11. I’m seeing this season out of order, so I don’t understand a lot of what’s going on, but Emily!whump FTW! Considering it was Minimal Loss that hooked me into the fandom, it’s a safe bet any ep where she gets to be center of attention and the whumpage will attract my interest, lol. I'm excited! I'm now a beta for this SSHG fic, The Professor's Discretion, mwahaha!
I was moping at the diminishing amount of fic left to read, which seriously sends me into a depression every time I finish gorging on my new obsession's available fic [it was painful post-TLW, let me tell you, 'coz at least with newer ones like Mentalist and CM, etc. I'm fairly sure people will post sometime in the future but that hope ain't there with older fandoms *sniffles*] and now I have something new to fixate on. My OCD is pleased at the chance to nitpick like crazy, hee. Editing is so much easier than writing, I gotta say. >:D

Since I haven't tried to brainwash anyone into my beloved ship lately: [except odakota_rose. *eyes hopefully*]

A hilarious scene between headmistress!Hermione and Snape, from the amazing Splintered and Broken:

The Interview )

I usually don't read post-Voldemorte-wins fics on general principle. [It's a category bursting with rape!fics, which tend to put me off. It's usually exploited by writers who want to indulge in dark, perverted abuse and glorious sadism, so kthxbai]

But this fic is so brilliant in the way it draws parallels between the victorious!Voldemorte era and the Ministry era, the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix [one man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter, y/y?], and familiar characters are recast in different roles. 'A lot of this story is about reoccurring patterns in a new generation', as the author says- there is Hermione as the new Dumbledore, pulling strings behind the scenes and coordinating the resistance, there is a new Severus, a new Sirius and new Harry Potter...in an unexpected but poignant way.

This fic corrects all the gender!fail of the HP!verse. It wasn't intentional, apparently, but women ended up being cast in most of the crucial roles and not in a gratuitous 'super!perfect!role-model!strong-female-character' way, not the irritating 'women are superior and males are not fit to lick their shoes' way, but in believable extensions of their canon personalities, only with all their potential explored and fulfilled. I mean, minor character Lavendar is still opposed to Hermione but written in a way that makes her POV understandable and sympathetic.

And by far, the most rewarding take is on Ginny. She's cast as this tragic character, who was never fully understood in canon, who had much more depth than we ever realized, who hid her darker streak and played the innocent because it was what Harry needed. And it's so beautifully done, it hurts.

Last week was a lot of fun, for a few different reasons. For one, I finally got to hang out with Jacob, an old high school friend. He and his sister, Katherine, are the only friends I've managed to make and keep for more than a year, although it's unfortunate that we only get together three or four times a year, but I'll take what I can get.

The other high point of my week was seeing New Moon.

Surprising, I'm sure, given that I think most of you know my feelings about Twilight. Safe to say…I’m not a fan. I’m an anti-fan, actually, I find a great deal of amusement in reading essays and sporkings by people who tear it apart and expose its massive fail with wit and snark a-plenty. But the movie was a great deal of fun, even if I still have no more respect for the books than I ever did. *shrugs*

I am unusually efficient this year, why, yes, I am. *preens* So the people who pm'ed me their addresses, you shall receive something from me in...oh, however long it takes mail to cross from Australia to your part of the world. It ain't an exact science, y'know.

It's never the procuring of cards that's the problem, it's figuring out what to write. I spent about half an hour per card, agonizing over word choice, referring to my dictionary to make sure I wasn't making any idiotic errors, looking up synonyms, and then miming writing out the lines to make sure I had enough space [odakota_rose, yours will be the notable exception, lol, I totally didn't plan it very well]- all this fretting and nerve-wracking tension before I ever set pen to paper! If I did screw something up, please- discretion is the better part of valor, y/y? ^_^

If anyone else still wishes to exchange cards, just drop me a line. ;D

OMG, so you know how we moved into our own house a few months ago? Well, it's sort of a WiP- the house is pretty much set, except for some window tinting and such minor surface things, but the surrounding terrain is pretty much just mud and weeds, so we've got landscaper people coming in, right? They're totally unreliable [although thankfully less homicidally inclined than the workers on CM this week *shivers*], they keep scheduling a time to come in and then postponing for some reason.

Well, out of nowhere, they turned up this morning. And I only realized they were around when a construction dude wandered past the window while I was in my bra. *flails* Lately, mother's left the kitchen curtains drawn because it's way too hot and sunny, but of course, the one day she leaves the curtains open would be when I'm in a state of dishabille and a guy happens to walk past! Okay, so he wasn't looking in otherwise I'd be a hell of a lot more embarrassed but I nearly had a heart attack. :O

Imagine the Psycho music from the bath-tub scene, that was the soundtrack for this particular moment. Minus the hysterical girly shrieking. I thought a tactical retreat would be more effective than standing rooted to the spot, screaming. [God, I hate when people do that on tv- sure, honey, finding a body is really traumatic but why don't you shut your mouth in case you draw the killer's attention and just run and find help, y/y?]

So, Mentalist ep 6.

---

Is it just me or is there a deluge of books lately revolving around ordinary human girls/amazing supernatural dudes?
Just a few that I came across while browsing for new books- Shiver, Hush Hush and Fallen [a rip-off of Twilight]. Among many others.

Was there always a market for this or did Twilight create the new demand for that kind of romance? I can understand the appeal of these books- I wouldn't mind being swept off my feet by someone rich, handsome and super in love with me, y'know? It's all about wish fulfilment, I get it- but my tastes have always run towards a more equal relationship, where the chick is equally awesome and talented and kick-ass. When I read the books, it's more about vicariously living through the main female character- so if she's just this average, boring person with no skills or self-confidence, I get bored pretty fast.

I don't think I've pimped these books lately, so I will now- YOU MUST READ:
*Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels books, starting with Magic Bites, and
*Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy books, starting with...Vampire Academy.

I've just had one of the best weeks of my life.
If I could choose any period of my life to live over again, it would be this last week.
I indulged in all the simple pleasures in life- reading, eating, watching, sleeping... *shivers with delight* It was perfect.

GUYS. OMG, OMG, OMG. CHECK THIS OUT.

About three things I was absolutely certain. First, Edwart was most likely my soul mate, maybe. Second, there was a vampire part of him–which I assumed was wildly out of his control–that wanted me dead. And third, I unconditionally, irrevocably, impenetrably, heterogeneously, gynecologically, and disreputably wished he had kissed me.

And thus Belle Goose falls in love with the mysterious and sparkly Edwart Mullen in the Harvard Lampoon’s hilarious send-up of Twilight.

Pale and klutzy, Belle arrives in Switchblade, Oregon looking for adventure, or at least an undead classmate. She soon discovers Edwart, a super-hot computer nerd with zero interest in girls. After witnessing a number of strange events–Edwart leaves his tater tots untouched at lunch! Edwart saves her from a flying snowball!–Belle has a dramatic revelation: Edwart is a vampire. But how can she convince Edwart to bite her and transform her into his eternal bride, especially when he seems to find girls so repulsive?

Complete with romance, danger, insufficient parental guardianship, creepy stalker-like behavior, and a vampire prom, Nightlight is the uproarious tale of a vampire-obsessed girl, looking for love in all the wrong places.

o.O >_< :DDDDD

How spectacular is this?! I WANT. *dies laughing*

[PS. Can anyone tell me how to bloody block quote? It would make quoting large blocks of text so much easier]

Season 2 of Merlin makes me sad.

Because of this.

I won’t begrudge other shippers their joy at having their pairing made canon- if I can’t be happy, at least someone else is. [Not like the epic fail of SGA which shot down two main ships and made nobody happy, except for Keller!obsessives] But I still feel so let down. Season 1 made me have hope, only to be brutally crushed by the new season.

I had a dream that the dvd for the entire season was already out here in Australia [lol, considering it takes months, if not years for a dvd to come out round here] and I was tempted to buy it but then I remembered that it went from the promising multi-shipping aspect of the amazing season 1, which catered to Morgana/Arthur [original!ship], Morgana/Merlin, Morgana/Gwen AND Morgana/Uther [guilty!ship], as well as a gazillion other permutations, to the new and historically-approved Arthur/Gwen. *criz into pillow*

I cannot bring myself to watch it and see the new direction without feeling bitter at what I’ve lost, you know? I’ll pretend it ended at season 1 and just relive the earlier glory. *nodnod*

My season 1 Castle dvds from the amazing carolune04 arrived. I don't really buy into the whole 'things happen for a reason' thing. I don't think we need to suffer in order to truly appreciate the value of life. I think people could manage just fine in a world without extremes like earthquakes and tsunamis, and still manage to appreciate everyday joys and pleasures. Death and destruction has no value to those it affects personally, and it leaves little impact on the rest of the world. I've heard about natural disasters befalling other countries and apart from a moment of sympathy and pity, it didn't linger with me. Not til Samoa.

I am so ashamed.

"Stephenie Meyer's vampire series has become Australian children's favorite book series, ending Harry Potter's two-year reign...[it] managed 15,400 votes compared with Meyer's 39,000."

My state recorded the second-highest total of votes with 22, 893 votes. *facepalm* I just- I cannot fathom what kids aged 5-17 are doing reading this! I mean, there are primary school kids wallowing in this- this abomination. *sputters* Learning how romantic it is to be stalked and emotionally abused...*head!splodes*

To cheer myself up from what would otherwise be a debilitating state of frustration, I quote you this:

Twilit

"Hey!" Hermione protested as Severus snatched her book away.

He flipped through it, his sneer growing progressively deeper.

"How can you read this? It's utter drivel. The writing is juvenile, the plot practically nonexistent, and this male lead..."

Hermione rolled her eyes. "Right. A pale, sulky, guilt-ridden guy with a sketchy past who spends his days surrounded by idiotic schoolchildren until he falls in love with a brown-eyed brunette who's way too young for him. Who could ever find that attractive?"

Severus snapped the book shut. "I do not sulk. Nor am I, if you haven't noticed, a vampire."

Chaotic Rationality. You don't think much of rules and restrictions; you look at things from an analytical perspective and probably think morality is relative to some extent. Your strength lies in being able to make your own judgments and form your own strategies uninhibited by others; your weakness lies in the wariness other people may have of you, perceiving you as dangerous.

Have I mentioned my slight Snape fixation lately? I find myself utterly entranced by this pic.

*sighs* I want a Billowy Cape of Doom, damn it.
If I could menacingly stalk through the halls with black cloak swirling behind me, I'd feel like the coolest person ever.
^_^ I just read this fic where Hermione applies a charm to alter herself slightly to resemble a female version of Snape in order to work on deconditioning Neville's instinctive fear response and it's bloody hilarious.

“I kind of like being able to slam the door and the way the robes swirl behind when I walk.” Her voice dropped as if she was imparting a great secret. “And I always feel taller.” Hermione glanced down at herself and then spun around in a tight circle. She did her best imitation Snape scowl and then ruined it by breaking out in a huge grin as the robes swirled about her and then fell in graceful waves around her boots. "You know,” she said, “there is something fun and empowering about these robes. I can see why he favors them."

Ooh, ooh, luxuria_oceanus [and any others who are susceptible to my brainwashing], Hermione/Snape fic recs!

I've formed a habit of taking small character traits from some of the characters I've fangirled over the years. Like Scully's cross necklace, Janeway's 'coffee, black', Elizabeth's red tops, the raised eyebrow from too-many-fandoms-to-count, speaking patterns and trademark phrases from various others...also? I was the only girl in Bio who didn't get squeamish over dissections because I totally channelled Scully in autopsy!mode. [Snapping on the latex...heh]

This is normal. Or at least, not too weird, I don't think. But it's probably going too far when I realize it looks like I've adopted Snape's hair regime. I mean, love him, I do, but the greasy hair thing? Might be a little too much. *facepalm*

Speaking of cloaks, Merlin has an abundance of these. I'm not sure how practical it is to sweep those robes over the floors and dirt- how they avoid tracking mud all the place is baffling to me- and the laundry maids must curse at their burden in life, lol, but one thing's for sure, it looks impressive and majestic. Cloaks are a fantastic fashion accessory, they hide a lot of flaws and serve to make people look wayyyy more attractive than they should. *clutches heart* Pretty people!

I eat, sleep and breathe them so I can crowd out all the other thoughts in my head and it gives me something happy and shiny to distract my mind with til I can pull it together again.

Interesting fact: the pills I'm taking, Roaccutane, have been linked to depression. Not straight-out cause-and-effect but there's mutterings it could be one of the factors involved in depression. The doctor I saw the other day told me that a few girls he'd treated had mentioned feeling 'a bit blue' and he suggested they stop taking the pills, a statement they greeted with great horror. First I half-think about shipping Uther/Morgana 'coz the damn show seems to be getting more and more Arthur/Gwen oriented- *scowls* how very traditional and unoriginal of it *sneers*- and in self-defense, I'm trying to get over Arthur/Morgana so it doesn't hurt as much later.

And now? Well, it started off so innocently- looking up a bunch of Harry/Hermione fics rec'd by the lovely sunny_serenity, and somewhere along the way, I came across an AU fic involving a crossover between HP and the Garth Nix Abhorsen books. I was intrigued by the idea of that crossover- although it turned out to be a snurching of the concepts from those books, specifically, the necromantic bells used to control the Dead, rather than the characters.

The Apprentice and the Necromancer [or here at ff.net] is nothing short of brilliant. It is utterly amazing and wonderful and one of the best fics I've had the fortune of reading. It is what led me to obsess over Hermione/Snape for the past week or so. *headdeskwallfloor* I'm not kidding when I say OBSESS, like, staying up to 2 or 3 in the morning to read fics, yo. I've already had dreams about them, which is bizarre considering how long it usually takes me to dream about a new fandom. Months, if ever.

I feel so incredibly guilty, there seems to be a lot of hate for this ship, but in my defense, I'm not saying pedophilia's okay, or that crossing the teacher/student boundary  is acceptable when it's true love or that rot, because it's NOT, and I can't stand the fics where the authors seem to be justifying abusing the position of authority because, ew, gross, much? *shudders*

I just enjoy the AU!ness of a world where adult!Hermone and Snape could get together and there are a few uber talented authors who make it seem so plausible and make it absolutely beautiful and enthralling.

The random:

While I was looking up HG/SS fics on ff.net, it jogged my memory of a time years ago when I went searching for another pairing and I've finally worked out one of the reasons why I hate the Harry Potter movies so much. [Apart from Daniel Radciffe's abysmal acting skills. Or "skills", rather]

It's the casting for Professor McGonagall. As I read the books, I knew that she was supposed to be mature in years but I pictured her as the Polgara kind of ageless, y'know? I totally shipped her with Snape. She was firm and practical and bossy, he was snide and snippy and haughty, they bickered all the time...perfect recipe for romance. All the couples in my ships want to kill each other most of the time, so it makes sense to me, lol. Then out rolls the movie and Maggie Smith, MAGGIE SMITH takes the role...*facepalm* She is a great actress, critically acclaimed and widely celebrated and I'm not disputing her talent, but it totally ruined everything. *sighs* I hold onto grudges like a pro, so I've never quite forgiven the movie adaptation for doing this to me.

Btw. Bat For Lashes? Is AWESOME. I've been listening to The Wizard [watch Natasha Khan perform it here] and it's officially my favorite song for my new ship. [I feel way guilty now- I already have a song for Hermione/Snape and not for some of my longer-term ships? Agh!]

Vidspam:

Not really a ship vid, per se, just a few subtle hints here and there. It's really lovely and Snape gets to look like a hero, so yay! I've adored him since book one and it makes it hard for me to watch people be cruel and malign him.
