I like Buffy, it's a fun, entertaining show but the relationships are what keep it from being awesome in my eyes. There's always some relationship drama going on and it pisses me off. I want to see butt-kicking and wise-cracking and all, not angst angst angst over some romance breakdown. But I almost prefer the Buffy/Angel or Buffy/Riley era because they turn into jackasses by season 6 because of their respective relationships. I mean, I'm hating on Xander and Willow for most of the season, that's just so wrong when they're the protagonists! So yeah, it was probably a good thing you got out when you did. :P
