* I think I need an icon from one of my fandoms with the text 'BOOBS' on it for intellectual conversations with luxuria_oceanus. :P Can anyone point me in the right direction?
* I'm doing the same thing with Castle as I did with The Pretender- falling in love with it via fanfic before ever seeing the show. It happens when people constantly squee at how brilliant and shippy it is, leading me to seek out fic so I too can share in the squee, and before you know it, I'm completely obsessed. [Not that it takes much prodding to convert me, lol *facepalm*]

There's quite a few similarities between Castle and Mentalist, what with the professional, by-the-book, kick-ass, gun-wielding chick and the exasperating, trouble-making civilian 'consultant' and their bicker/flirt routine. Except there is way more sexual innuendo in Castle, apparently. Beckett seems to serve it back to him more than Lisbon does to Jane, which is one of the things that bugs and amuses me about Mentalist- she'll resort to things like 'bite me', which doesn't rate a 10 on the wit scale, but it's rather cute how he flusters her and she has no come-back, it's exactly how I'd react. I appreciate banter but I have no skill at it!
This review of Castle mentions the flip in the traditional roles of men and women, and references Mentalist with this line:
'Although The Mentalist also has a female detective and a male consultant, it's not the same because Patrick Jane dominates everyone he comes in contact with, so Lisbon never really gets any spotlight...'
>_< Sad but true. I love Lisbon, I love Jane, but I do wish the writers would emphasize Lisbon a bit more. She's in the background a little too much for my liking. I know Jane's abilities are central to solving the cases, but it'd be nice to have good ol' fashioned police work on Lisbon's part unravel the puzzle now and then.

Both women rely on their magic badge to get them what and where they need. Authority fetish, anyone? ;D

Both women are equally fierce with a gun. RAWRRR. Gun kink. :P

LMAO. So, Beckett's the more brutal of the two women! She'll attack Castle if provoked, whereas Lisbon's the more nurturing, caring one, who'll take care of him when mean people up and sock him on the nose.
Interestingly, both women also have an angsty history involving their mother. Lisbon lost hers in a car crash with a drunk driver- Beckett? Not sure, the mysterious phrase 'It's about your mother' or some such is floating around, but I haven't a clue what that's about.

I really love the tough, composed facade both of them wear, but they're vulnerable underneath if someone as perceptive as Castle or Jane start poking and prying into their past. This text from an Emily icon suits them- 'strong but I break'.
[The Castle caps are from sapphs' site, catering to all your shippy needs. ^_^]
* One last thing Castle/Mentalist have in common: unfortunate ship-smushes. Jisbon- gah! *glares at sapphs* It's all your fault I can't take this ship name! And for Castle/Beckett- Caskett! WTF? JUST A TRIFLE MORBID, ISN'T IT?*shakes head* Lmao.
* I think I'm on a roll here because I've also fallen for Eleventh Hour which is yet another show in which the gender roles are flipped with the female being the one with the gun running around protecting the brilliant but erratic and slightly insane male civilian. [I'm so predictable!]
*streetcatx is made of awesome. She posted several fantastic icon entries while I was gone, and I am on squee overload right now. I can't resist posting some of the funnier icons- there's an abundance of shippy ones, but you'll be seeing them when I get around to that icon cull to add them 'coz they are just wonderful.

Bwahaha! That last icon sums up my thoughts perfectly! The other members of the team are all paired up and he's on his lonesome. Poor guy, no wonder he always has a book around, so he can bury himself in fiction while the couples are a-flirting.

OMFG, ADELLE DEWITT?!
Lol. That's seriously the first thing I thought when I saw this gorgeous pic of Lena Headey. :P
I've seen about half of Dollhouse now and I'm really enjoying it. I think 'coz I went in all squicked out and fully aware of its flaws and shortcomings- there's something to be said for watching something with zero expectations, it can't help but do better than you thought. :D

That's the most messed up couples contraction I've ever heard...
I've only managed to see like two eps of "Castle" and, to be honest, sweet as the 'ship is (and i do adore it greatly for reasons I won't get into because I don't want to spoil), I'm almost more in love with how Castle relates to his family. Three generations of Castles live in his home. His mother is sometimes embarassing and sometimes exasperating, but he loves and respects her and listens to her advice!!! When's the last time you saw a well-adapted, grown adult on television who has a loving and respectful relationship with a parent instead of an adversarial/disrespectful one? I know I'm drawing a blank. And, which is even cooler, imo, he and his teenaged daughter have an open, loving, respectful relationship with one another (she can roll her eyes and he can be overprotective but, at the end of the day, it's a beautiful relationship). I just love that about Castle and his family:)

Darlin', see this icon of mine? ACCURATELY SUMS UP MY CHARACTER. I love spoilers, don't ever be wary of discussing things. ITA with you about the wonderful depiction of a close, loving family. They're not perfect- his mother totally takes advantage of him sometimes and he gets exasperated as you would but it's cute how he just shakes his head and lets her get her way. [It's like the reverse of how he acts with Beckett]
There was this funny scene, paraphrasing since I have a terrible memory for quotes, but his mom says, 'I have class' and he cracks a line like, 'I hadn't noticed' or something like that and they both fake laugh at each other and it's SUPER ADORABLE, AWW! *wriggles*
The daughter's really cool, if unrealistic. I love her but really, what kid has a crying fit over not telling her father about a teensy mistake and GROUNDS HERSELF, WTF? This kid is an alien, gotta be, she's too perfect. But I'm liking the trend back to non-troublesome, un-heartache-y kids that I'm seeing here and in Lie to Me, because it was pissing me off that kid!drama took over a lot of shows and 'twas painful to watch.

Love the icon. But I have friends whose standard response to me even hinting that I might start spoiling is to grab the torches and pitchforks, so I always try to be careful :)
Basically, near the end of the first season, Beckett finds out that Castle is digging into her past and she tells him that, if he keeps digging, their association is over but he figures it might help her heal so he's willing to keep digging and risk never having her tolerate his presence again because he wants her to have closure. I just find that so beautifully selfless of him that it makes me want to smush him to pieces.
Well, I never had a good realtionship with my father, but I always interacted with Mom a lot like Castle's daughter does with him, up to and including guilt and self-imposed punishment for keeping shit from her. Granted, I'm a complete freak and have been for most of my life ;p
*nods* Castle and Lie to Me both are really promising in terms of normal families being portrayed instead of these family units laden with angst, competition, contempt, deception, and just all manner of things that don't represent the vast majority of real families out there. I mean, yeah, all families have problems, but not like they show up on TV...

I swear, no one fangirls OTPs quite like you do, that's for sure.
Hmm, enjoying Dollhouse, thus far? Let me know how you like it when you reach the end, is all I'm saying :-P
*nuzzles* Ah, the fangirl is back, in all her cuteness for me to poke and share the pervy with.
Oh, such joy ;.;

Hee. I'll take that as a compliment. ^_^
Hmm, enjoying Dollhouse, thus far? Let me know how you like it when you reach the end, is all I'm saying :-P
'k...*ponders* Is the end supposed to be terrible? 'coz I've seen the penultimate ep, Briar Rose- apart from being GROSSED OUT [poor Victor *sadface* That was just ick and reminds me of one of the most rage-inducing scenes in Resident Evil], I thought it was pretty cool and I'm totally on edge to see the finale 'coz damn, messed up! I'll never understand why everyone's so obsessed with Caroline, lol, she's like a bone in the middle of a pack of ravening dogs!
Wait, if you're feeling joy, why do the punctuation marks look like a crying face? Please explain! :O
PS. This icon was inspired by you. :P *coughs* By your icon, I mean, lol.

Not if you know Joss Whedon like the rest of us.
He loves playing with our heads, our emotions, our eyes, our nose---hell, every inch of us is HIS PLAYGROUND when you watch his shows, the maddening man! And he always saves the best for last, is all I'm saying.
Ever heard of the expression 'tears of joy', m'dear? Exactly :-P

another point which I was pretty much thinking about lately which u mentioned is that both troubled (adding Dr, Temperance Brennan from Bones) all these female characters have a painful past regarding their mothers (Beckette's mother was killed by some murderer due to unknown reasons but she never continued the investigation to know who and why) .. and their mothers' absence made them so controlled and independent..
Me too want Lisbon to have the last word on a case from time to time.. u know when she said to Jane "not every murder is a secret inside of a secret inside of a secret" I thought why not make Lisbon solve a mystery on her own.. she's not the dumb for sure.. Also, I'm so much in love with this TV show "Lie To Me" and there are 4 members each 2 work on a separate cases.. I thought why don't they do that on The Mentalist.. Perhaps Lisbon and Cho could work together while Jane, Van Pelt and Rigsby work on another.. like a contest (silly I know works for a fanfic though :D)
as for Eleventh Hour, OMG .. Jacob/Rachel are just breathtaking couple.. He's not THAT arrogant like House or Jane, but he's soooo sweet and down to earth.. I hate them for canceling the show *sobs* .. it had so much information that I enjoyed and the finale was heart-breaking.. I hope it sees the light again..
streetcatx makes the most beautiful Mentalist icons.. she just ROCK! I loved the Cho one. I remember she posted it for the icon contest for The Mentalist.. they're was just marvelous..
you might consider a new shipping couple, Mika/Pete from Warehouse 13 (idk why house word has to be in ever show now dollhouse, warehoue, house...what next!!!) they are just sweet and cool and very beautiful couple..

Ohhh, thanks for cluing me in about Beckett's mom- it's weird that she'd never investigate that case, though. Repression, denial? I wonder if we'll ever get to see Lisbon's mother's case on the show, like, maybe the drunk driver gets hauled in during a case and we see a few cracks in Lisbon's calm, confident facade and her team wants to beat up on this guy to make her feel better.
I do watch Lie to Me and I ship Cal and Gillian so this split up thing frustrates me so much because my ship is separated for a lot of eps and I'm like NOOOOO! Ack... But I would like to see Lisbon's brains solve the case for a change.
Duuude, I watched most of Eleventh Hour this weekend and it's heartbreaking how awesome it is because it's OVER. *wails* NO FAIR. I really like that here's a leading dude that ISN'T kind of a jackass. I love Jane, I love House, but they get cocky and arrogant a lot, and Hood is sweet and scatterbrained and he never condescends or anything, he's so endearing!
Hmm, that show looks interesting, I'll have to check it out. *huggles* Thanks for the rec, hon, it looks exactly like the kind of show I'd enjoy!

Caskett? Wow. Thanks fandom for providing yet MOAR evidence of my shipnamemashup LOATHING.
Nice compare/contrast of the two shows. ^__^
And now I miss Terminator... *writes a Dear Fox, YOU SUCK MONKEY BALLS letter*

,I have Two Suns and Horse and I if you want. y/n?
Y/Y! If it's not too much trouble, that would be lovely!
*snorts* Name mash-ups work in some rare fandoms- I think 'Calria' from Lie to Me is pretty, even though it's not my ship- but statistically? Mash-ups are made of massive fail. How one with associations with death became popular, I'll never know. O.o
Thankies! They're startlingly similar when you break 'em down!
Duuuude. Your icon. *stares at the pretty* GUH.
I'll admit,I didn't watch TSCC for the plot- who did? I got hooked in by Summer and then fell for Lena and omg, so saaaad I won't get my fix of terminator-bashing, end-of-world-averting females anymore. *sends Fox letter-bomb* >:D
I know it's irrational but I almost felt disloyal for liking Dollhouse 'coz both it and TSCC were rumored to be up for cancellation and everyone thought it'd be DH but then TSCC went and I became interested in The-Show-That-Lived.

*raises hand* Me... The pretty was a bonus. The action was the pretty and the omg!I!Wanna!Be!Sarah!Connor! And!Or!A!Reformed!Killer!Robot! was totally the cherry on top. I heart the Terminator mythology and it's never ceasing possibility train.
I wrote FOX THIS EMAIL and totally sent it. Frakking losers...

*tacklehugs* There are no words for how awesome you are. Like, whatever word describes a person a thousand levels above awesome, that be you. *smooches*
Ahaha, now I feel ashamed for watching the show on such a shallow level, lol. Weeellll, not really, but I should've paid more attention to plot elements- although who can blame me for being distracted by the pretty? I need to get the dvds and marathon, yo.
Speaking of A!Reformed!Killer!Robot!, I really enjoyed Self Made Man, though I don't think it was one of the more popular episodes. I loved seeing Cameron making friends and the ending was kinda sad- I wasn't sure if the guy was dead or just in treatment, but she lost her buddy. *sniffles*
Duuuude. *high-fives* That email! They need to be swamped with hate mail like that. *nodnod*

*blushes* *iz smooched*
LOL. The pretty can be distracting. In fact it's supposed to be methinks. Especially when BAG came on board. WHO KNEW?!?! WHO? The pretty factor just skyrocketed. And you know what I loved about it? I never shipped. I didn't really feel that shipping would be appropriate cos there's only ONE love story in Terminator and that's Sarah/Kyle. MARATHON! I can't wait for the s2 DVDs. I'mma go ape shit.
I think people didn't like it because they're stupid. Every ep, IMO, was essential in telling the complete story. And anytime Cameron makes friends it's freaking awesome. The moments of AWKWARD coupled with the deep audience knowledge of it's a killer!robot!adapting!to!kill!HOOMANS!*iz*!*dark* underline of the scenes made the show appealing for me. Sure some of the eps moved slowly but I'd rather they take the moment of character over gratuitous sex scene or boring exposition. I think Leverage has mastered the combo of character beats on the fly WHILST going thru plot/exposition. It's kind of genius.
*high fives* I hope I got my message across. That should be our new campaign. HATE!MAIL!FLOOD!
no subject
cos there's only ONE love story in Terminator and that's Sarah/Kyle.
So I take it you never shipped Cameron and John? A vast majority of the fandom seems to, which- I see where they're coming from, but- I CAN'T. I have to say, for me, John's one of the worst things about the show [Riley being the other, but she got dealt with] which doesn't bode well for the future of mankind.
Look, I loved the bubbly!Cameron personality from the first ep and I wish they hadn't shown us that possibility and then yanked it away, but SMM was awesome because she was unable to show anything other than stoic and solemn but despite this 'impediment' of not carrying on normal human interaction, she still developed a meaningful friendship and that was just wonderful to watch. There's that 'oh, crap, one wrong word and she could go mental and snap this person like a twig' mentality underlying everything and when they navigate those treacherous moments and continue, still all buddy-like, I got this sense of euphoria and pride, like, 'THAT'S MY GIRL', lol.
I'd rather they take the moment of character over gratuitous sex scene or boring exposition. I think Leverage has mastered the combo of character beats on the fly WHILST going thru plot/exposition. It's kind of genius.
Firstly, WORD. Character development is a lost art. *sighs*
I think it's 'coz of this cancellation culture we live in, showrunners live in constant fear of becoming irrelevant and being dropped so rather than pace themselves and spacing out significant moments to allow for build-up and proper impact, they throw everything at the wall and hope something sticks. I can kinda see it from their point- why hold something in reserve if there's a chance there isn't going to be a later- but it has utterly ruined a lot of tv shows for me.
Secondly, LEVERAGE. *whimpers* Why is the British thing of short seasons catching on? What happened to 18/22 episode seasons? THIRTEEN, REALLY? *wibbles* 'tis unfair.
*schemes* It's my birthday this week. I'm gonna make Netty sit down and marathon Leverage with me to make me feel better, lol.
no subject
Yeah, no, not really. Like I understand why people do ship it but I don't because SHE'S A ROBOT. It'd be like shipping Sarah with Uncle Bob in the second movie. It's never gonna happen and if it did, gross. Riley bugged the crap outta me. They should've moved her story line a little quicker, instead we had to suffer through the minutia of teeny-weeny-angsty-wangsty stuff. Blech. John, I like. He can do tortured teeny-weeny-angsty-wangsty all on his own thankyouverymuch. We have no need for a girlfriend. I always wanted to see how John Connor got to BE JOHN CONNOR and I think Dekker did a good job of that. He really gave John someplace to go emotionally so he'd get over that teen phase pretty quickly. I was hoping to see him really start with the leadership and charisma thing. That's the BIGGEST thing I missed in s2 when they got rid of his dopey friend Morris. You could really see WHY people were drawn to him in the future BECAUSE of his charisma, charm, appeal, kindness etc etc and not just because they're the last of humanity.
It's the freaking studio executives.that frak everything up. They're all about making money not artistic integrity. It's a shame that everything must filter through them in order to get to us, the loyal fans. If only money wasn't the thing that made the world go 'round... *sigh*
I dunno. I'd rather have 13 solid stories over 22 craptastic filler episodes kinda like how I'd take BSG's crappiest episode over 14 years of junk. However, Leverage got 2 extra eps this season so we get 15! YAY!
w00t! MARATHON! I just finished mine. So good.
