Shark makes me gleeful!
Why was I in despair over the summer viewing? With Bones and Shark, I am set, ships locked and loady and ready to explode!
The first time I've tried to insert a vid, so here goes- just a little taste of what I love about Shark, and an example of how it mimicks the House/Cuddy dynamics.
Oh, dear god, I could die from giddiness. Season 2 of Shark is absolutely amazing.
And I have a comparison between the Stark/Jess dynamics and House/Cuddy below. Because these relationships are quite similar and that's the main reason I fell for this show in the first place. You can't beat quick wit and flirty banter! House introduced me to it, now Stark is continuing in that fine tradition.
So, the first ep of season 2 was everything I could’ve hoped for- except for Julie. I mean, she started off as this sweet kid with whom he had an adorable relationship, the quips between them only something I *wish* I had with my parents. Then she turned into a witch who’s using her father to be with some dude- she made him so happy by moving back in with him and it was only for a guy that she thinks she’s in love with. I feel so bad for Stark, damn it. I could understand her wanting to be with a guy, but to deceive her father? That's evil. [And I say that when my own relationship with my parents operates under the premise that 'what they don't know won't hurt them]
But that’s the last minute, the rest of the ep is absolutely amazing! I was worried when I heard that Jessica lost the election for DA, because I thought that meant she’d be booted from the show, sort of like Elizabeth lost leadership of Atlantis and she’s been written out, you know? But no, the writers are so damn awesome- they’ve made Jess part of the team! YAY! [SGA TPTB? This is how you do character development]
And I admit, I did it an injustice- after watching a few season one eps, I said that the show aspired to reach the heights of Huddy. Well, now that I’ve seen this, I realize it’s a totally different type of relationship. Now that she’s not his boss anymore, it’s moved beyond mimicking the Cuddy-trying-to-keep-House-in-line-but-failing-miserably thing. In that area, it could never match up to Huddy, not with all its innuendo and euphemisms and Cuddy’s hilarious jibes in response, things I’d never imagine her saying but she dishes it right back to him. Jess is not quite that outrageous- not that she's demonstrated so far- and her attire doesn't consist of as many low-cut tops as Cuddy's.
But I could’ve died when Stark welcomed her to the team. This is what truly differentiates it from Huddy. No more the administrator-maverick dynamic. Now it’s a partnership. And I could never see this scenario playing out in House, but it works here and it’s largely Stark’s attitude. I think House would enjoy having Cuddy be under his thumb too much, he’d totally abuse that authority and she’d never even consider joining his team because of it. He doesn't seem to take her seriously as a doctor, you know?
Whereas Stark anticipates Jess joining them full time and when she finally tells him her decision, he reveals her new office that he’d set up for her! So cute, omg! And they are more willing to co-operate with each than House would be willing to with Cuddy, he delights in seizing control from her, in being difficult for the heck of it, even when it’s totally counter-productive, or maybe because of it.
So I think that's the main difference from Huddy, that Stark/Jess are more of a team with fun jabs at each other and less baggage, whereas Huddy is more of a constant guns-blazing battle and some serious history [eeiiik, established relationship, noooo]. So Shark has the Huddy-equivalent ship with less angst and more fluff. And the less warlike nature of their relationship means we have scenes where Stark and Jess stand around, sharing drinks with each other cosily giving off intimate vibes. Hee!
I mean, look at this exchange:
Stark: You’re gonna love working for me.
Jessica: Yeah, actually I picture it more like a partnership.
Stark: With me as the senior partner.
Jessica [teasingly]: Well, you’re definitely senior.
Stark [raises his glass and toasts]: To a long and happy marriage.
Jessica: More like a first date.
Stark [smirks]: No going to bed angry…no fighting in front of the kids.
It’s just so right, it’s perfect. And this!
Jessica: You look tired.
Stark: I can’t sleep. House is too quiet since Julie moved to New York
Jessica: Maybe you should get a dog.
Stark: Or you could move in. It’s clear you can’t live without me.
Jessica: This is one of the last cases I assigned before I left, I don’t want *you* screwing up my batting average.
Stark: Fine, deny your feelings...
And OMG, this!
Jessica: I just bought you 72 hours.
Stark: You promised the judge a witness we don’t have!
Jessica: Were you always such a big whiner?
Stark: I don’t need your help to get cited for contempt, okay?
Jessica: You’ve got three days to rebuild your case.
Stark: Our case, you just signed on for the duration, sunshine. And if we don’t come up with that new witness, your perky little butt is going to be right up there on the flagpole next to mine.
Jessica: Spare me your fantasies.
Stark: They’re all I have...
I am so in love right now. ;) Reading the quotes was heady stuff, watching it nearly blew my head off, I was so squeeful!
Totally d/l the rest of season 2! They will provide my Huddy fix until new eps are available. *sighs blissfully*
