Blatant Anti-Sheyla Post
Oh, I know this isn't nice, but I'm in a bad mood, and mocking Sheyla as a ship makes me feel better.
If it bothers you, please don't read it.
So, I was looking up 'The Kindred'- I don't watch season 4, but I want to keep up to date, and came across a John/Teyla-centric analysis of the ep. [link here]
My problem is not so much the INTERPRETATION, because all ships are a matter of perspective and bias, but when you start blatantly ignoring contradictions to your ship, that's when I get involved. I'll admit to the odd vaguely-anti-Sparky moments on SGA, but I find a way to explain them away.
For instance- the Conversion kiss between Shep and Teyla? Is a moment of sexual violation and cannot be described as 'romantic' from any sane perspective, unless a man forcing himself on a woman is a turn-on, in which case, you have problems.
When people don't even mention moments that conflict with their ship, I see that as a sign that they know it's a serious threat to their world-view and acknowledging the moment will ruin their chosen pairing because of the overwhelming evidence in support of another pairing.

I mean, consider the following:
"For one, John's lack of reaction at first when Carter asked where Teyla was was a little concerning."
A LITTLE? Heh, I so want to see this ep now.
"Then it's towards the end the John angst gets good when Ronon says to him "We'll find her". It's just so much a reminder of Teal'c to Sam in Paradise Lost and then Jack when Sam went missing. And we all know what that means!"
This is the line that set me off. People saying to Shep that they'll find Teyla completely PALES IN COMPARISON to the end of Lifeline where Shep, not caring what Carter thinks of his steadfast determination to get Elizabeth back, not caring how much this reveals about the depth of his affection for her, states that 'I'll find her'. He, personally, is making a vow that he'll find her. Now, how much more shippy is this, from the horse's mouth, so to speak? He is way more than concerned, he is committed. None of this wishy-washy 'not really concerned and displaying no reaction' to the missing Teyla situation.
"Then Carter saying about Todd coming through - for "you" - not the team but specifically John."
Okay, time for another reality check. These interpretations are valid, sure, I can see where the person is coming from- my point is that Sparky trumps them. Remember Conversion? The ep that so does not confirm Sheyla? When Elizabeth- who is the only one devoted enough to stay with Shep through his transformation, no matter how terrifying, to give him a link to who he is and to help him hold on, and to offer comfort when it seemed like nothing else could be done- tells Shep they weren't able to procure the icky bug stuff to synthesize a cure for him, he says he wants to be killed and 'It's better for the both of us.' HA. No matter how bugified he was, he still remembered enough of their relationship to know that he's only going to hurt her- emotionally, not to mention physically a minute later- and that she shouldn't have to remember him like this and that for his part, he doesn't want to be responsible for causing her pain and that a clean break is the only solution, otherwise he'll drag them both down. My interpretation.
Okay, and last of all? I remember Shep saving Teyla in 'The Ark' and telling her not to get big-headed about it, he didn't do it for her personally, he'd do it for anyone. How romantic. I totally do not see him EVER telling Elizabeth the same story. In 'The Eye' he was concerned for her and asked if she was ok and then told her she'd be fine. In 'The Real World', he was as soft and open and emotionally available as I've ever seen him, he was so tender and couldn't stop smiling. Because he was happy she was safe. And no mention of 'I didn't do it for you, don't let it go to your head'. Because risking his life for her was worth it, if it meant saving her. And that's final.

Look at it this way. TPTB start a show with a ship idea in mind. But two actors either do have chemistry together, or they don't. in the case of sheyla, there's NO chemistry. What happens? The hawt princess warrior ends up in wrinkled lady shadow. You know, the skinny one that's supposed to be annoying. Bunch of Shep/Weir shippers are jumping out of nowhere! Oh noes! What's happening? Three years of sparky shipping? And OMG it's on screen and it looks real? We have to remove the spinster to give Xena (Athosian edition) a shot . Uh oh wait. She's preggers. Our cool flyboy can't be a daddy, so let's say she's preggers by another man. But ZOMG flyboy and Athosian Xena are so much in love (nevermind that she slept with another man). Just look at that angst! She slept with wraith mutant but she really loves Shep, you know. And Shep is suffering so much, he can't even react. emotionally. Or in any other way.
What a romance!!!
Now tell me how great this ship is?!

What worries me most besides the young girls mooning over the Conversion kiss, is the all married women in that group doing the same. Don't blast me for that comment. But I hope with age maturity would happen, and one would be able to distinguish force vs. genuine emotions. That doesn't seem to happen w/ Sheylas.
p.s. you need to start posting more. where have you gone to lately?

Tell me the sheyla spy - how are they interpreting that kiss? I'm curious.

*growls* TPTB suck beyond words. I'm not supporting the Sheyla ship, but I love the team dynamics, and I wanted a reaction. Did TPTB give us one? Noooo. Are we sure that they're supporting sheyla? Because they're doing a really crappy job at it.
And, BTW, sparky pwns all. Just a reminder.
