Day 7 of Happy Meme

I know technically it was meant to be over eight consecutive days but um...Christmas and New Year's kinda got in the way. It happens...

So, without further procrastination [the one thing I am brilliant at] the wonderful character I'm focusing on today...

Emily Prentiss.

I think my affection for her is completely different from all the other characters I love for one important reason. I loathed her at first sight. Actually, that's not completely accurate- I hated her before I ever met her. Just because she was replacing Elle and I couldn't handle that idea. The funny thing is, I love her now MORE than I ever cared about Elle [I never looked up fics or art or blogged about Elle] and yet it was due to the latter that I was predisposed to hate her. Huh.

Every single other character that I fangirl, I've loved from the first moment I laid eyes on them or read a fic on them or whatever medium first lead me to them. But Emily's unique in that I was actively trying to dislike her and yet she won me over and I'm not sure how it happened.

She marks a return to the less morally ambiguous, more ethics-bound, straightforward characters. I had an even split between the 'good' archetypes- Scully, Janeway, Elizabeth- and the 'complex, grey area' characters- Xena, Vala, Roslin but she's tipped the balance back to the saints, lol. [I know that simplifying it, but hush]

Professionally, Emily's calm and cool under fire. I like that she doesn't fall apart under pressure or one of those godawful 'silly weak female' types because I could never respect that. She's tough, just as capable as the men on the team [if not more] whether it's handling physical or mental challenges.

This compartmentalizing thing is an interesting aspect of her character because we rarely see her when she's vulnerable and it gives you an appreciation for her strength and will. She got bashed up pretty good in Minimal Loss, but that didn't bring her down. Despite the plethora of fics which have me banging my head into a wall when she breaks down, freaks out, pulls at her hair and messes up her mascara as she slides desolately down a convenient wall and waits for the author's choice of companion to come rock her to sleep, Emily bounced back and reported for duty in the next ep with no visible nerves or weakness. Because she is that awesome. She knows that the job is dangerous and accepts that risk and is perfectly capable of handling violence and terror without going mental.

Personally, she's a real revelation. I find a lot of female law enforcement types are dull and boring and bland and blah. With zero personality. But Emily is the total opposite of that trend. While she's not ruled by her emotions or highstrung, while she does keep deeper darker things compartmentalized, Emily is far from buttoned up and repressed.

She's bright and cheerful, she laughs freely and makes fun of her co-workers and cracks jokes, her sense of humor is so relatable that sometimes I'll make a crack while watching an ep only for her to repeat a similar sentiment later in the scene- we'll always have Goldilocks. :D And OMG, when she paid out Will about his accent...! *squees*It's like she was tuned to my mind's frequency or something!

She's just a joy to watch in those scenes when the team is bantering with each other. Partly because her inflections slay me, also because she is so beautiful. There, that's another reason I love her and I'm not ashamed of it! When Mother saw her, she was all, 'Oh, this woman isn't as pretty as Scully', which I nearly headsploded over because ZOMG, how can you compare my precious favorites? They're all so special and brilliant in their own way and you can't say one is better than the other! But I forgive her because finally we are bonding over a tv show and I understand not everyone can be in love with Emily like me, though I think the world would be a better place for it. *nods firmly*

Real life thing that makes me happy...

I'm drawing a blank for today. My parents are imposing restrictions on me and RL is sucky. So, a fandom thing that makes me happy- FotoBridget2's started a new novel length Em/Hotch fic of awesome! Yay! :D
