Happymaking List of Win.

#1. Found Glee in the mail from odakota_rose. *squishes* Now I'm plotting to get the rest of my family into the show. *cackles evilly* I've just been stroking the pretty cover for the past week; I know it sounds creepy, but it's so shiny and new and squeeful! :D

#2. MY FATHER'S GOING TO FIJI FOR A WEEK, WOOHOO!
*happydances* A whole week without him! I am so excited.  ^_^

Yes, it sounds cold, but as much as I appreciate what the man has done for me, he's not easy to live with- FFS, he'll seize on any excuse to get angry; too many pens on my table, the tap not aligned at the proper angle over the sink, the curtains not closed at some arbitrary hour...it's gonna be blissful without him around. *sighs happily*

#3. Guess what? I walked into the library foyer and a desk laden with odds-and-ends caught my eye, with the sign declaring 'Free to good home: be quick before they're binned'. I saw a whole pile of junk and was about to walk off when these stopped me in my tracks.

I read these books hundreds of times in high school, and now I have my own copies! *bounces* I just wish they hadn't put those stickers right over their faces, but what the hell. Free X-files books, omgyay!

#4. ‘k, so why is Alexis wearing a ring on her wedding finger?

Is she hiding something from us? Maybe I’m being dumb and she explained it somewhere along the way and I missed it but wow. Either that’s a promise ring from a boy she’s serious about or she’s disregarding the convention that a person can’t wear a ring on that finger without it meaning something. I occasionally wear one of my rings on my wedding finger- heck, I’m never getting married and I’m running out of fingers, so what the hell?

Craptastic List of Fail.

#1. Oh, dear god. I wasn't going to watch SYTYCD Australia, or at least, not the auditions- but mother had it on and called me, just as a contestant auditioned with a song from the Labyrinth soundtrack.

O.o Freaky, no? The week I fall in love with this movie, some crazy fan shows up with a routine to one of the songs...but holy crap, it sucked SO BAD. I was cringing, this chick just totally made me want to throttle her for giving people another reason to laugh at sci-fi/fantasy fans. *glares* Oh, tv gods, just ONE person I needed to rock the routine so that I could delight in the fandom squee, but no, she made me ashamed to admit to loving that song. Ugh.

#2. Mentalist!fail.

Robin Tunney on the new boss- "It's another woman who's going to flirt with Simon and have power over me...I don't know if that's going to go well. I think there's going to be some jealousy and some power struggles. We're all going to have difficulty with it..."

I have major issues with this )

Yes, I know I'm judging it before even seeing what they're going to do with this plot arc. But  after the way the writers resolved the R/vP UST and the Bosco thing...I've lost a lot of faith in them. It's getting way too desperate.

#3. Vampire Diaries- WHY IS THIS SHOW SO STUPID?

WHY AM I STILL WATCHING IT?

Convo of Epic Fail )

#4. The Border.

Does anyone watch it?

Not me, after the season 1 finale. *wibbles* )

30 Day Meme: snurched from labrt2004.

Day 04 → Your favourite book.

Tough call, there are a lot of books I love. But for the one that combines all the elements that I most adore into one amazing book, I'll say Ilona Andrews- On the Edge. Seriously, all the things I love to see in my heroine, all the squeeful aspects I enjoy seeing in my ship...it has it all. *dances* You should all read this book, it's made of epic win.

I do love the Kate Daniels books, but this one's romance/fantasy, so I got to feel like I'm reading something more intellectual than my usual trashy romances but still with Rose rocking the feisty banter and reluctant UST and badassery and culminating in a happy fluffy ending. :D

This fic, The Headmaster’s Tale, by tearsofphoenix made me realize there’s another item I can add to the list of Why Snape is the Awesomest Ever. He’s reappointed as headmaster with this reasoning:

“…and we acknowledge the recipient of this offer, Professor Severus Snape, to have been the best Headmaster Hogwarts ever had, at least in recent centuries, he being the only Headmaster all of whose students stayed safe and alive – and that during the most adverse of times - thus succeeding where even his highly honoured predecessors, Armando Dippett and Albus Dumbledore, failed.”

WIN. Death Eater occupation and still he manages to protect all the students, even when all the teachers and Dumbledore's Army defiantly acts against him. What a hero.

-

Okay, look, I completely agree that teacher/student relationships in RL just should not happen. Under any circumstances. Mitigating factors in fandom provide exceptions to this rule but the key word is FANDOM.

My love for Hermione/Snape in the Harry Potter!verse is one such exception and I refuse to justify it. But the thing is, this pairing mainly works for me because of the extraordinary circumstances they face, where all sorts of lines are blurred because of the situation they find themselves in. I would never ship a student and teacher in a show that’s more reflective of real life.  A show such as my recent guilty pleasure, Glee.

There is no magic, except what the kids create onstage. There is no war, except that which Sue wages on the rest of the world. It’s just ordinary, if talented, kids at an ordinary school with- okay, not exactly ordinary teachers, they’re all freaks in their own way, lol.

Still. Despite the chemistry I see between Rachel and Will, I refuse to ship them. REFUSE. They might go beyond the usual teacher/student dynamic- things get intensely personal between them, they have expectations of each other and engage on a different level than he does with any of the other Gleeks, but although I like both characters, that’s not reason enough to ship them.

That said, I feel kinda smug when I read that the original premise of the show? Totally had teacher/student sex. Because I so called it from the first moment I saw them together.

-

All right, I blame ed_84 who is the reason I’ve been tempted back to Legend of the Seeker.

I gave up on it halfway through the first season because it was all about Richard/Kahlan. I adore Kahlan, ‘k, mad love for that woman because she is the definition of awesome but I just don’t get her and Richard.

Richard criticism )

But ed_84’s icon of a hot blonde chick with the caption- ‘there is no theory of evolution, just a list of creatures Cara has allowed to live’ intrigued me. You have to be a certain type of fierce to carry that attitude off. For instance, you’d never see a pic of Jennifer Keller with that caption- unless it was in mockery.

So I researched Cara and fell madly, deeply, intensely in love. Jetgirl78 picspammed her and Kahlen over here- lots of shiny pics, so go check the pretties!

[Warning: I’m perilously close to shipping Cara/Kahlen now. I’m not ordinarily into femslash, but god. For these two, I’d totally make an exception. This is the fault of jetgirl78’s amazing picspam, so just be aware it might convert you…]

Thoughts on Cara )

*wriggles with glee* So happy right now! ^_^

Day 1- your favorite song:
At the moment? You might be able to tell from my journal entry titles that it's Florence and the Machine's Blinding. Such a powerful, moving song. -

The amusing.

Stephen Jenner's "TwiLite: A Parody."

Love between a teenage girl and a vampire can be a beautiful thing. Then again, it can get a little ugly. Just ask Stella Crow. Stella is a clumsy but otherwise ordinary girl whose life takes a radical turn the moment she meets Edweird. Though perfect on the outside, Edweird Sullen is remarkably unrefined on the inside. He also happens to be a one hundred year old vampire, trapped in the body of a teenage boy, who has yet to finish high school. Nonetheless, Stella is unconditionally smitten with him. But not everything is rosy in this gloomiest of towns. Edweird's enemies have sworn to put a tragic end to their romance. Against all odds, the bond between Stella and Edweird is nearly strong enough for their love to survive. Most love stories between an impossibly handsome vampire and an ungainly young woman have a magical ending. This one - not so much.

The pretty.

So everyone’s squeeing over the Jello!glee with the spoiler pic of them from Rose Colored Glasses floating around. *bounces* I give you a blast from the past with- Castle and Beckett.

Finally, my Christmas cards have been posted! *happydance*
I am unusually efficient this year, why, yes, I am. *preens* So the people who pm'ed me their addresses, you shall receive something from me in...oh, however long it takes mail to cross from Australia to your part of the world. It ain't an exact science, y'know.

It's never the procuring of cards that's the problem, it's figuring out what to write. I spent about half an hour per card, agonizing over word choice, referring to my dictionary to make sure I wasn't making any idiotic errors, looking up synonyms, and then miming writing out the lines to make sure I had enough space [odakota_rose, yours will be the notable exception, lol, I totally didn't plan it very well]- all this fretting and nerve-wracking tension before I ever set pen to paper! If I did screw something up, please- discretion is the better part of valor, y/y? ^_^

If anyone else still wishes to exchange cards, just drop me a line. ;D

OMG, so you know how we moved into our own house a few months ago? Well, it's sort of a WiP- the house is pretty much set, except for some window tinting and such minor surface things, but the surrounding terrain is pretty much just mud and weeds, so we've got landscaper people coming in, right? They're totally unreliable [although thankfully less homicidally inclined than the workers on CM this week *shivers*], they keep scheduling a time to come in and then postponing for some reason.

Well, out of nowhere, they turned up this morning. And I only realized they were around when a construction dude wandered past the window while I was in my bra. *flails* Lately, mother's left the kitchen curtains drawn because it's way too hot and sunny, but of course, the one day she leaves the curtains open would be when I'm in a state of dishabille and a guy happens to walk past! Okay, so he wasn't looking in otherwise I'd be a hell of a lot more embarrassed but I nearly had a heart attack. :O

Imagine the Psycho music from the bath-tub scene, that was the soundtrack for this particular moment. Minus the hysterical girly shrieking. I thought a tactical retreat would be more effective than standing rooted to the spot, screaming. [God, I hate when people do that on tv- sure, honey, finding a body is really traumatic but why don't you shut your mouth in case you draw the killer's attention and just run and find help, y/y?]

WHEE, lookit the pretty!

Not only did I ace it, but I won the privilege of picking the topic of the next quiz, hee!

So, Mentalist ep 6.

---

Is it just me or is there a deluge of books lately revolving around ordinary human girls/amazing supernatural dudes?
Just a few that I came across while browsing for new books- Shiver, Hush Hush and Fallen [a rip-off of Twilight]. Among many others.

Was there always a market for this or did Twilight create the new demand for that kind of romance? I can understand the appeal of these books- I wouldn't mind being swept off my feet by someone rich, handsome and super in love with me, y'know? It's all about wish fulfilment, I get it- but my tastes have always run towards a more equal relationship, where the chick is equally awesome and talented and kick-ass. When I read the books, it's more about vicariously living through the main female character- so if she's just this average, boring person with no skills or self-confidence, I get bored pretty fast.

I don't think I've pimped these books lately, so I will now- YOU MUST READ:
*Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels books, starting with Magic Bites, and
*Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy books, starting with...Vampire Academy.

People. I meant to be organized this year and once again, I totally fail. *eyeroll* Big surprise.
Anyway, before I forget again, is there anyone that wants to exchange Christmas cards? Vampire Diaries
.

I caught an ep of it yesterday and holy crap, but I didn't think anything could rival Twilight for worst love triangle.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but there IS something more irrational and ridiculous than the Edward/Bella/Jacob angst-o-rama!  )
---

Randomly? I read someone's comment about how they pictured Keanu Reeves as Snape, rather than Alan Rickman, and it reminded me of this:

'k, I loved Keanu first, but I love Alan Rickman [I can't just call him Alan, for some reason, lol] best .
I've now watched Sense and Sensibility half a dozen times-I just wish I'd had that massive crush on him back when we actually studied the bloody book and watched the movie in Year 11 Lit, I would've been so much more inspired, damn it!

And I've seen Dogma about a dozen times. I can't help it, 'tis extremely crude and foul at many points, but it sitll has me in gigglefits all the same.

Bethany: What are you?
Metatron: I'm pissed off, is what I am! Do you go around drenching everybody that comes into your room with flame-retardant chemicals? No wonder you're single.
[Ahaha! This is the APPROPRIATE reaction to finding someone in your room watching you sleep, a'right?]

Btw, I have a sneaking suspicion I saw an edited version, though- I looked up some quotes and there were mentions of a nun and some other randoms and exchanges I didn't see. If they cut any Alan Rickman scenes from the one I watched, I'm going to be pissed off myself. *frowns*

Comment and I'll give you a list of 4 people. You have to chose which to marry, which to shag, which to snog, and which to throw off a cliff.

Characters provided by the lovely kat_rowe.

Marry- Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)- because she complements me perfectly. We're both witty bookish types, can't you see the magic happening here? :P
Throw off a cliff- Spencer Reid (Criminal Minds)- because he is the center of all angsty whump everywhere, like a moth to the flame. *nodnod*
Shag-  Carson Beckett (SGA)- the uber adorable Scottish doctor! With dimples, omg! How can I resist? I gotta tell you, meeting Paul at the recent con has made me love Carson even more. I watched some classic SGA over the weekend, totally love him and Rodney's banter... ^_^
Snog- Kate Beckett (Castle)- do I need a reason? The woman is stunning!

GUYS. OMG, OMG, OMG. CHECK THIS OUT.

About three things I was absolutely certain. First, Edwart was most likely my soul mate, maybe. Second, there was a vampire part of him–which I assumed was wildly out of his control–that wanted me dead. And third, I unconditionally, irrevocably, impenetrably, heterogeneously, gynecologically, and disreputably wished he had kissed me.

And thus Belle Goose falls in love with the mysterious and sparkly Edwart Mullen in the Harvard Lampoon’s hilarious send-up of Twilight.

Pale and klutzy, Belle arrives in Switchblade, Oregon looking for adventure, or at least an undead classmate. She soon discovers Edwart, a super-hot computer nerd with zero interest in girls. After witnessing a number of strange events–Edwart leaves his tater tots untouched at lunch! Edwart saves her from a flying snowball!–Belle has a dramatic revelation: Edwart is a vampire. But how can she convince Edwart to bite her and transform her into his eternal bride, especially when he seems to find girls so repulsive?

Complete with romance, danger, insufficient parental guardianship, creepy stalker-like behavior, and a vampire prom, Nightlight is the uproarious tale of a vampire-obsessed girl, looking for love in all the wrong places.

o.O >_< :DDDDD

How spectacular is this?! I WANT. *dies laughing*

[PS. Can anyone tell me how to bloody block quote? It would make quoting large blocks of text so much easier]

Rant of the day.

So frakking pissed off.
This will teach me not to first read the end of a fic to make sure it's one I can deal with-
never
will I make that mistake again.
200,000 words into the fic and then I find out my ship doesn't frakking stay together.
W. T. F. *angsty!flail* All those hours wasted!
I'd've rathered it remain unfinished than find out they separate. *snarls*
I like my 'happily ever afters', all right?
I don't care if it's childish, but if I wanted angst and misery and despair, I'd've stuck with the books, kthxbai. >:[
I don't even have the vocabulary to express how frustrated and disappointed I'm feeling right now.
Feel free to lend me your words, I find myself annoyingly inarticulate at the moment.

Also, the father's on leave this week. Imagine my joy.
Particularly since we had a battle of wills over the weekend over my fingernails, of all the most frakking petty things ever. I managed to reduce our face time to a mere hour over the two days and yet we still clashed. Takes real talent, no? I just cannot believe I'm 21 years old and he wants to ORDER me to cut my nails or else- the unspoken threat being that I can get out of his house if I don't like it. Lovely. I enjoy living with a control freak ever so much.

Amusing fact of the day.

Definition of 'grangerize:
PRONUNCIATION: (GRAYN-juh-ryz)
MEANING:
1. To mutilate a book by clipping pictures out of it.
2. To illustrate a book by adding pictures cut from other books.

LMAO. I kinda want to read a fic about someone teasing Hermione Granger with the definition of her last name. *smirks* The girl worships books and the idea that her last name means to MUTILATE them, well...JKR is one twisted woman [but we knew that already]. Luckily for Hermione, nobody's smart enough to realize it or even think to do research on the matter, so it's unlikely to ever be used against her. *gigglesnorts* Hee. Poor girl.
---

I've been listening to a lot of angsty music lately. What can I say, sad songs- especially about unrequited love- 'tis my new favorite genre. I hate it in fic, but love it in music. Hmm.

Song recs for the sad soul )

Hit me with recs, if you feel so inclined. [Pretty please?]
Remember, angsty unrequited love. *nodnod* Bonus if it has violins, I'm a sucker for anything with violins, sounds so much more poignant, y'know?
---

To maintain the theme, an angsty poem:

Renouncement

I must not think of thee; and, tired yet strong,
I shun the love that lurks in all delight-
The love of thee- and in the blue heaven's height,
and in the dearest passage of a song.
Oh, just beyond the sweetest thoughts that throng
this breast, the thought of thee waits hidden yet bright;
But it must never, never come in sight;
I must stop short of thee the whole day long.
But when sleep comes to close each difficult day,
When night gives pause to the long watch I keep,
And all my bonds I needs must loose apart,
Must doff my will as raiment laid away
With the first dream that comes with the first sleep
I run, I run, I am gather'd to thy heart...'

-Alice Meynell

I love the last two lines. I confess to not knowing exactly what this poem means, I can't read poetry, my brain doesn't work that way, but the idea of being around someone you can't be with, and having to wait til your dreams, the only place where you find yourself welcome in their arms...*sighs*

I was re-reading this convo that odakota_rose and I had a while back about a TLW/Sound of Music crossover and her crack!dialogue still sends me into gigglefits. ^_^

Can you imagine Marguerite meeting all these randomly happy singing people?
{Marguerite: Roxton, they're just going around singing! Obviously they're delusional.

Things that make me bounce off the walls:

I CAN GO SEE AMANDA TAPPING! WHEEE! :D
I was worried about the timing before, 'coz my parents wrangled numerous concessions to allow me to go to the convention last year, when it was a month before exam period. But due to the tortuous new trimester system- which necessitates the loss of our holidays plus study week *glares*- exams finish the week before the con! Oh, joy! *twirls giddily*
-

Does anyone know why the hell Channel Ten is suddenly screening So You Think You Can Dance at 11pm now? What happened to the family-friendly 7:30pm slot? They'd never do this shocking time-frame for the Australian version, so what gives? I much prefer the American show, with the hilarious judges and wonderful Cat and far more entertaining and humorous contestants, and it deserves better than to be relegated to last place behind Simpsons and movie repeats. *frowns*

Chaotic Rationality. You don't think much of rules and restrictions; you look at things from an analytical perspective and probably think morality is relative to some extent. I'm sure you're middle-class enough to understand how boring you are. I'm returning your Hannah Montana underwear to you, but I'll keep my virginity as a memory. You should also know that I told my psychiatrist about the bruises and you ruined my attempts at another world war.

Go drown yourself,

Teh serious:

Um, so I'm making a habit of playing least in sight. *sighs* I'm always making apologies and it must sound a little hollow by now but- I just don't feel all that great and I don't want to inflict my mood on you guys so as usual, I run off and dive headfirst into as many fandoms as possible and just immerse myself as fully in them as I can. I eat, sleep and breathe them so I can crowd out all the other thoughts in my head and it gives me something happy and shiny to distract my mind with til I can pull it together again.

Interesting fact: the pills I'm taking, Roaccutane, have been linked to depression. Not straight-out cause-and-effect but there's mutterings it could be one of the factors involved in depression. The doctor I saw the other day told me that a few girls he'd treated had mentioned feeling 'a bit blue' and he suggested they stop taking the pills, a statement they greeted with great horror. They would only consent to taking a lower dose or to taking the pills less often. Lol. The lesson here? 'tis better to be pretty and unhappy than to feel ugly. *snorts*
---
The disturbing:

I- I don't know how it came to this. *clutches head* I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME.

First I half-think about shipping Uther/Morgana 'coz the damn show seems to be getting more and more Arthur/Gwen oriented- *scowls* how very traditional and unoriginal of it *sneers*- and in self-defense, I'm trying to get over Arthur/Morgana so it doesn't hurt as much later.

And now? Well, it started off so innocently- looking up a bunch of Harry/Hermione fics rec'd by the lovely sunny_serenity, and somewhere along the way, I came across an AU fic involving a crossover between HP and the Garth Nix Abhorsen books. I was intrigued by the idea of that crossover- although it turned out to be a snurching of the concepts from those books, specifically, the necromantic bells used to control the Dead, rather than the characters.

The Apprentice and the Necromancer [or here at ff.net] is nothing short of brilliant. It is utterly amazing and wonderful and one of the best fics I've had the fortune of reading. It is what led me to obsess over Hermione/Snape for the past week or so. *headdeskwallfloor* I'm not kidding when I say OBSESS, like, staying up to 2 or 3 in the morning to read fics, yo. I've already had dreams about them, which is bizarre considering how long it usually takes me to dream about a new fandom. Months, if ever.

I feel so incredibly guilty, there seems to be a lot of hate for this ship, but in my defense, I'm not saying pedophilia's okay, or that crossing the teacher/student boundary  is acceptable when it's true love or that rot, because it's NOT, and I can't stand the fics where the authors seem to be justifying abusing the position of authority because, ew, gross, much? *shudders*

I just enjoy the AU!ness of a world where adult!Hermone and Snape could get together and there are a few uber talented authors who make it seem so plausible and make it absolutely beautiful and enthralling.
---
The random:

While I was looking up HG/SS fics on ff.net, it jogged my memory of a time years ago when I went searching for another pairing and I've finally worked out one of the reasons why I hate the Harry Potter movies so much. [Apart from Daniel Radciffe's abysmal acting skills. Or "skills", rather]

It's the casting for Professor McGonagall. As I read the books, I knew that she was supposed to be mature in years but I pictured her as the Polgara kind of ageless, y'know? I totally shipped her with Snape. She was firm and practical and bossy, he was snide and snippy and haughty, they bickered all the time...perfect recipe for romance. All the couples in my ships want to kill each other most of the time, so it makes sense to me, lol. Then out rolls the movie and Maggie Smith, MAGGIE SMITH takes the role...*facepalm* She is a great actress, critically acclaimed and widely celebrated and I'm not disputing her talent, but it totally ruined everything. *sighs* I hold onto grudges like a pro, so I've never quite forgiven the movie adaptation for doing this to me.

Btw. Bat For Lashes? Is AWESOME. I've been listening to The Wizard [watch Natasha Khan perform it here] and it's officially my favorite song for my new ship. [I feel way guilty now- I already have a song for Hermione/Snape and not for some of my longer-term ships? Agh!]
---
Vidspam:

Not really a ship vid, per se, just a few subtle hints here and there. It's really lovely and Snape gets to look like a hero, so yay! I've adored him since book one and it makes it hard for me to watch people be cruel and malign him.

You guys know how I crave crackalicious cracky goodness like a drug, right?
[TLW- case in point]

I heard about this supposed Snow White remake with Natalie Portman as a reincarnation of Snow White and seven NINJAS, instead of dwarves, sent to protect her from her Evil Stepmother's schemes.
How insanely awesome sounding is this?
Snow White and NINJAS, yo. Kung fu + fairytale = *insanely bouncy glee*

But whether or not the movie is real, rather than the figment of some lunatic's imagination, Natalie Portman apparently turned down the role. *woes* I love Natalie Portman, she adds class to her projects. ---

The parents are such bores. My father and I were sitting in the car outside Safeway waiting for mother to get some groceries when suddenly we see these two kids bolt out of the store, frantically racing along with a loaded trolley.

'Where are they going in such a hurry?' he wonders. 'Maybe they stole it,' I suggest. JOKINGLY, mind you, but the next second, this check out chick marches out in search of the thieves.

They've ducked around a car, out of sight, and she manages to walk down the length of the car park, looking left and right EXCEPT FOR WHEN SHE PASSED THE CAR THEY WERE CONCEALED BEHIND. *headdesk* It was quite hilarious. You'll note neither my father nor I involved ourselves in the proceedings- he was muttering dark prophecies of these troublesome teens bashing someone over the head, so you know...a policy of non-intereference, not just practiced by the Ancients!

Then another guy comes out to join the search and he pinpoints their location with impressive accuracy. The funny thing is that they've gotten into the car and crouched down at the back, obviously hoping to remain unseen, but he just stands there, pointing and ranting at them til they sheepishly get out of the car. BWAHAHA. I really wanted to stay and see how things played out, watch them get chewed out, see if the cops were called, but mother returned and then we were off. No curiosity whatsoever, those two, hmph.

---

The dinner on Saturday...rollercoaster ride before we ever even left; the parents had a huge argument and at one stage we weren't going to attend any more but they managed to patch things up and we made it after all. I was kinda disappointed- I had two episodes each of Mentalist and CM, so I was all ready for a cosy night in. Alas...

Dinner was crazy. Never go out with a bunch of Samoans, they are such a rowdy bunch. Old people are supposed to be sedate and mature, right? But they were singing at deafening levels, they pushed aside the furniture for some traditional dancing- and one lady got up on her chair to do a bit of a hula, omg- they were accidentally breaking glasses...yeah. I lost my voice because it was so hard to converse with my cousins over the adults' ruckus. *eyeroll* I thought it was funny that the restaurant people closed the door to our room, I guess because we were disturbing the other patrons, lol.

The WTF moment of the evening- when 'Aunty Flo' [she's like, my grandmother's cousin or something, I have no idea] asked us girls if we'd read Twilight because people at work were recommending it. *horror* Apparently it's like LORD OF THE RINGS, they said to her. *dies* I- I don't even know how to respond to that level of self-delusion.

Let's move on to fantasy of actual worth. I said a while back that Jim Butcher's Codex Alera is the best fantasy series ever. I stand by that, though I must split hairs in order to declare that in my not-so-humble opinion, Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels books are the most awesome urban fantasy books ever. I just finished Magic Strikes and am fighting the urge to cry at the devastating news that the next book won't be out til NEXT YEAR. *sobs*

But look! Pretty cover art is pretty! :D

As if you don't want to read that. Come on, badass chick with a sword? A fierce looking lion? [Although I'm overcome with the inappropriate urge to coo and stroke it, bury my face in its mane and take rides on its back like it's Aslan and won't rip my face off for the insult]

Go ooon. Read this excerpt from the first book, Magic Bites and tell me that doesn't capture your imagination. Borrow it from the library or just buy it, I promise you will not be disappointed. Heck, I'll even buy it from you if for some unfathomable reason, it's not to your liking. Just read it because it is the most frakking fantastic thing I've read in years. *glees* We have magic and technology co-existing in a world with shapeshifters of all varieties and a fascinating and really original spin on the whole vampire concept, starring a witty, kick-ass heroine who uses brains and brawn to overcome all obstacles, with a quip at the ready, no matter the situation. I love her more than I've loved anyone in a book before. *worships*

Vampires.

I've been listening to the Kings of Leon track Closer [download here] on repeat the last few days. Fantastic moody song, but just sounding good isn't enough for me, I like to know the lyrics so I can a) sing along and b) ponder deep thoughts about the themes and metaphors and so forth.

I really hate it when bands don't include lyrics with their albums, I think that the amount of money they charge for a CD should cover the damn words to their songs. *frowns* There are a lot of conflicting verses on the internet and I can't figure out which one's right. Considering my family has been mocking me since my childhood for messing up the words to Macy Gray's Try ['I try to say goodbye...to my chook'. *facepalm* I love chickens, it didn't strike me as odd that someone would write a song to one! I was a kid, okay? Shut up!], you can understand why this might bother me. I am paranoid about being the butt of the joke, it's my mission in life to avoid this humiliating fate.

ANYWAY, I was really surprised when I found the popular opinion was that it's about vampires. I guess lines about running from the sun and bleeding people dry should've maybe given me a clue, but it's damn hard to figure out what the singer is saying, okay? I just love the horror movie theme and what a creepy vibe it has. *shudders delightedly*

-

Anyone read the Vampire Diaries books? Apparently there's talk it might be turned into a series. I haven't read it, so maybe I shouldn't judge but I am sick to death of stupid selfish teenage girls and their desperate attempts to hook vampire lovers and frakking mind-blowingly lame-ass love trianges. The show's been promoted with the premise of 'vampire brothers and their girlfriend'. Oh, whoop-de-frakking-do, how thrilling. A girl that can't choose between two vampires, this is the backbone of the show?! *gags*

If you want to read a great vampire series, try Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy. Original, exciting, and oh, look, the main relationship that's sustained over the three currently published books is the one between the heroine, Rose, and her best friend, Lissa. I just love that there is some female friendship being highlighted here, as well as romance and UST. For some reason, authors tend to treat snagging a boyfriend as the be-all-and-end-all in life, like having a close and loyal friend isn't important. Because all females care about are guys, y'know.

Bonus- there is actual plot in these books, small things like handling peer pressure and depression, and large-scale things like uncovering conspiracies and fighting bad vampires and all that jazz. Rose is a kick-ass chick, she has an actual personality [no bland, vapid Mary Sue is she] and many strengths as well as believable flaws to ground her in reality, plus? She is pretty damn funny. I was so into the books that when I found out I had to wait a few weeks for the library to get it in for me, I ended up going and paying for one! This is how awesome they are!

I complain about petty things all the time, but at least I know they're petty. Some people are unbelievable.

Case #1.

So, Disney's releasing a movie called The Princess and the Frog [imaginative title! No, it's actually about a female astronaut on Mars, really], featuring its first black Princess, and we have groups supporting this move and saying how it promotes positive self-image amongst little black girls because they get their own special princess to idolize, the message is that you don't have to be white in order to be elegant and beautiful, you too are entitled to a prince, right? The merchandise will finally include a princess doll that matches their physical appearance! So far, so shiny. Then the wank begins.

*cut for ranting* )

---

Case #2.

Family groups outraged at former Hi-5 member Kellie Crawford posing for a men's magazine. TEH HORROR.

OMG, she doesn't even SHOW ANYTHING! Kids see people wearing less on the public beaches and at swimming pools, FFS.

*cut for ranting* )
---

This one I'm a little more sympathetic on.

Australian's Next Top Model hasn't even aired yet and there is controversy! This chick was told to gain weight or be kicked off the show. Cue complaints that fashion is unhealthy for teens and encourages negative self-image, blahdy blah blah. *yawns*  This isn't anything new, folks. But at least people are starting to speak out against unhealthily emaciated lookin' girls. I admit, I'm biased towards slender figures myself, but ribs poking out? Nuh-uh. Collarbones, though. *daydreams* I have a thing for collarbones, it's a little disturbing...

Can I just say how happy I am that my watch has finally been fixed? I had major issues while it was out of action for the past month or so, the anxiety built up so much when I had to open my bag...dig out my phone...slip it out of the case in order to check the time. I'm always running for my bus and it helps to be able to glance at my wrist and reassure myself I still have time to catch it, you know? Not having that option made me so jittery, ack.

---

Overheard on the bus today: 'Dint is not a word! No such thing, I was like, 'it's dent', don't be silly'. *headdeskwallfloor*

It took all my powers of self-restraint not to butt in and correct her. Serious will-power, yo. I'm the girl that still beats herself up for claiming 'esteems' was not a word during a Scrabble adjudication- this was LAST YEAR and it haunts me still. Damn girl on the bus. I'm going to be mentally screeching at her, 'DINT IS SO A WORD' for the rest of the day. :s

---

Do you guys have odd little rituals? You know, things that aren't really important but you have to do them a certain way otherwise it's upsetting? Like, I have a packet of pills- ten pills arranged in two rows of two and three at the opposite ends of the 'sheet'.

At first I took one pill a day, so that was fine, I didn't need any particular order or such. But when I moved onto twice daily, I had problems. It really bothered me having to leave one pill on its own in that row of three, then popping it and moving onto one pill from the other side. Just seemed messy. So now whenever I start on a new lot, I take one pill from the row of three on either end and then that leaves me with nice rows of two to go on with.

Yes, I'm a little crazy, what of it? I also have a place-mat I'm fixated on, I will literally refuse to eat at the dining table if I can't have that place-mat. Fortunately my parents humor me when I yoink it out from under their plates if they're using it when I come to the table. For all our difficulties, they do indulge my idiosyncrasies.

18% Benjamin_Sisko, 39% Kathryn_Janeway, 15% Jean-Luc_Picard, 22% Johnathan_Archer, 15% William_Adama and 7% James_T_Kirk!

Kathryn Janeway was a fantastic captain. Despite the incompetent writers and producers that plagued much of Voyager's run with "the moral of the story is.." and other Disneylike family-friendly garbage, Janeway excelled in making command decisions and did extremely well with balancing herself on the thin line between aggression and tolerance. She was unique in that she was the only captain that provided a sort of mothership (bad pun) as well as a paternal role as well to her crew. Harry Kim practically called her mom on various occassions, though he was no match for Seven of Nine when it came to begging for attention.
