Kathryn’s sent me two chapters of The Professor’s Discretion to beta in as many weeks, and I just received yet another this week. *twirls giddily* I do so love a prolific writer! And it's seriously like she's climbed inside my head to figure out what themes and types of exchanges I love the most in this fandom and promptly tailored the whole fic just to make me squeeful.

Like, at the moment, it's not very shippy, it's a mentor/student kind of relationship and I so adore that dynamic. Of course I want it to end on a shippy note, but I hate fics that have Hermione and Snape inexplicably fall for each other within the first thousand words. She's 60,000 words in and it's still on a student/professor basis, with little moments here and there that make me flail like a crazy fangirl and my heart exploding with joy, but it's not inappropriate or tacky or anything. Just...brilliant. *sighs with pleasure*

I strolled into Jay Jays to kill some time while waiting for the bus…half an hour later, my bus was long gone and I was still trying on different tops. ^_^ It’s been a while since I’ve gotten excited over shopping, there’s been slim pickings here but I really liked the look of the cardi selection. Originally $40, they were on sale at $25- and they’re all exactly what I was looking for, it was just perfect for me! So I walked out of there with three brand new cardigans just in time for winter. ^_^

My father and I spent over two hours in each other's company yesterday , engaging in pleasant conversation and companiable speculation. :O It's unheard of! And what was responsible for this miracle? The series finale of Lost!

We haven't watched it in years, but since it was the 'last ever' ep, we decided to tune in, and the experience was quite- enjoyable, bizarrely. Obviously the moral of the story is that tv can bring together even people that are usually mutually antagonistic, and if I want to- *gasp*- enjoy my father's company, we just need to sit in front of the tv together. *nodnod* Too bad this was a once-in-a-lifetime event...

[Btw, if anyone can explain that mindfrak of a finale, I'd appreciate it- I still don't get what the hell was going on! Muke was like, 'We're still no wiser now than we were five years ago,' lol!]

Sucktastic list of fail.

I was supposed to hang out with a friend last Friday but that fell through. I knew I shouldn’t get my hopes up and yet I fall for it every time. I keep thinking I actually matter to someone and then I’m proven wrong. Obviously it’s not worth having friends in real life, it’s just one blow after another to my self-esteem. ;_; I tell myself I'm an awesome person and it's their loss if they don't recognize it, but then why is it always happening to me? Why am I always the one it's so easy to forget about and leave behind? *throws a pity party*

The first time I use my card on their self-serve machine and it bloody rips me off! *scowls* Mother and Ma have offered me money to make up for it, but it’s not the same. *pouts* It’s not that I don’t want their money [perish the thought!] but that it doesn’t make up for Safeway ripping me off. >:[

Nothing happened with that job interview. *sighs* It’s been ages, so I think they went with someone else. I’m telling myself it's a relief, but I'm kinda disappointed. There goes another chance to be the responsible, productive adult I know is hiding somewhere deep inside, oh well.

I only have one session left with Sonya. *sadface* I was really enjoying these past sessions and I’m going to miss her. >_<

Though she joked, ‘You could get a job and then come back and see me.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, having the job would probably cause the stress that would make me need to see you!’

She’s been so lovely, it’ll be sad after my last session. *pouts* But $150 an hour? Pfft. So not happening on my dime.

As with any non-canon couple that faces the obstacle of a canon pairing, a lot of Snape/Hermione fics have to deal with the R/Hr issue. I've seen so many reasons for their  breakup- he falls in love with someone else, he cheats on her, he's threatened by her ambitions, she's fed up with him living off her without pulling his own weight, etc. etc.

The most unrealistic I've come across is the wife-beater!Ron stereotype, wtf? I don't like this kid, but if one of the two was going to be physically abusive, it'd be the chick that sent a flock of magical canaries to peck the living crap out of him and left him with wounds for weeks afterwards, right?

But the best resolution I've ever seen to their so-called 'relationship', without demonizing or vilifying either character, allowing them to remain friends afterwards, is from a fic called Arachne. It's also the funniest and most in character...!

Bwahaha! Epic! As much as I don't like this pairing, I really can't stand it when shippers go Ron!bashing and make it all bitter and ugly [even if that is actually in character] because I just want everyone to be friends, instead of ruining years' of history. So having the break-up due to her Animagus form...hee! :D

Before I could apply for this job, I needed referees for my resume and…none of my lecturers/tutors from uni would be able to vouch for me. I basically just wagged classes or I never spoke up, so yeah, uni was a bust. Which meant...I had to go back further in time, to when I actually attended classes and got on well iwth my teachers...

OMG! As usual, I’m the last to know, but thanks to weird_fin, I learnt about LJ’s new a la carte userpics deal! Damn Paypal takes a week to add funds to my account, but I am going icon crazy once I get my gazillion new userpic spaces! *eyes icon collection greedily* Ohh, all the pretties that I liked but never had space for! Their time has come!

But I am confuzzled. Can anyone explain this to me in simple English?

“The number of packages you select in the Shop defines how many packages you wish to have, rather than how many additional packages you wish to purchase. So, if you already have one package of userpics and then you choose ‘1 package’ in the Shop, only the time of your 1 package of userpics will be extended, rather than the quantity of userpics. If you’d like to have 2 or 3 packages in total, then you need to select either '2 packages' or '3 packages' plus the duration of time. Please note that the total amount of time purchased for all userpic packages will be redistributed so all packages expire at the same time.”

So, the userpics I already have- do they count as a package? As in, if I pay for one package, am I only paying to extend the time during which they are valid? And if I actually want extra userpic space, must I pay for two packages? I’d be pretty bummed if I thought I was going to have a few hundred icons but it turned out I’d just renewed their duration.

Also, I only got a paid account for the extra userpics. Now that you can have tons of icons without being a paid member, if I let my paid account lapse- do I still get to keep the icons I paid for? Or do I have to pay for them again?

Legend of the Seeker.

I admit, the first time I saw Sister Verna, I wasn't too impressed. I was prepared to be bored, rather, although slightly gleeful at the opportunity for Cara/Kahlan bonding with Richard interrupting all the time. [That paid off all right, beyond my expectations!]

But Verna won me over with the way she didn't fawn over Richard like so many others have, none of this 'oh, the wisdom of the Seeker' this and 'praise the Seeker' that. She was matter-of-fact and very realistic about his capabilities and wisdom- or lack thereof. Brutally honest with him about her opinion of him, and I grew to love her more and more as she turned out to be my on-screen proxy. Seriously, every dark thought I've had about Richard's stupidity, she's voiced to his face, it's been awesome!

For the first time ever, I managed to have KFC three days in a row. My cousin, my mother and then my aunt/Ma shouted me. ^_^ Well, it’s not doing my health any favors, but my ‘diet’ makes me happy.

My psychologist. My first session last week went well. I turned up, intending it as a one-time only, but she convinced me to return for the next five government-funded sessions and I figured why the hell not? It’s not like I’m doing anything else with my life, right? And discussing my lack of direction atm and the utter failure I am is oddly comfortable when it’s to someone who’s paid to hear people whinge incessantly, I don’t feel bad when I know they’re getting compensated for putting up with me.

I shrieked and cowered no less than three times last night, shuddering and insisting that there was a mouse running loose in the house. My poor grandmother dutifully rose and beat around corners and under beds and in likely hidey-holes, but failed to turn up any hint of a rodent each time. It was completely embarrassing and yet I couldn’t suppress my squeals each time I saw a dark shape scuttling around, tail slithering behind it. *twitches*

I’m sure Ma thinks I’ve lost my mind, it undermines my claim to sanity, jumping at shadows but I know what I saw! What I think I saw…ugh.

I absolutely loved this fantasy novel, the name of which shall not be revealed in case I inadvertently spoil one of you, and was so into the series that I contemplated buying the next book [or harassing the library into buying it for me].

When I spied it in Borders, I figured I’d take a peek at the final chapter to see if the chick ends up with the guy I wanted- well, win/lose. MAJOR loss. While they do hook up, and she even becomes pregnant, the very last words are ominous: ‘And then he knew no more’. Um, WTF? This is how it ends?

It could be in the less-scary ‘and then he fell asleep and knew no more til the following day when he woke up in bed with the Love of His Life’, but…considering he was in a duel where he sustained numerous wounds…and also the way it reminds me of this craptastic scene: ‘And then Snape moved no more…’ Yeah, depressing. It sucks so hard it reaches back in time to retroactively ruin my enjoyment of the first book. *pouts*

Fandom yayness:

Surprisingly, I'm reading a Harry Potter fic that isn't SSHG. Quelle surprise! I just devoured 44 chapters of Arsinoe de Blassenville's The Best Revenge. It's a Snape-mentors-Harry story and by god, it sunk its claws into me and would not let me wrest free.

This fic? Is what I wish CANON was like. It's infinitely SUPERIOR to canon and not in a fanfic way, but literally like it could've been published. I would've paid money for this fic, seriously. It fixes everything that I had a problem with in the books and surpasses them in terms of making Harry more likable and sympathetic. The boy actually studies and tries to achieve things and learn spells! Who'da thunk it? Also, Harry genuinely cares about other people and tries to help- canon!Harry is stunningly lacking in empathy or compassion.

And there is character development! *gasps* The amazing thing is that Harry and Draco are friends in this fic but Draco isn't  whitewashed til he's unrecognizable- given his upbringing, he has the same inevitable prejudices and flaws as in canon, but we get to see the positive effect Harry has on him in such a believable way. There is compromise and 'agreeing to disagree' instead of Draco miraculously converting to Muggle-lover in a heartbeat.

The best thing about the fic is the way that kids from all four Houses form friendships, and we have the core quartet that includes Draco and Hermione and Neville and makes it seem realistic that these very different kids would hang out with each other and actually grow to like each other over time, going from distant tolerance to real friendship.

And I won't babble about how much I love Snape in this. *bounces* Just take it as read, yo. ^_^

If anyone knows any epic-length mentor!Snape fics, rec me? Preferably gen!fic with no major ships [especially not involving Hermione, as I doubt there exists a perfect fic that has 'Severitus' plus SSHG]. I don't want to go looking because I'd have to wade through the Snarry fics and my brain does not need to deal with that.

There are a few moronic clichés that make me laugh myself silly or shriek til I’m hoarse every single time.

One of them is the ol’ ‘noble character throws themselves between another character and object of impending death’. Why why WHY, for the love of fandom, do these people hurl themselves through the air? How can they POSSIBLY calculate the correct angle and trajectory and factor in the wind and velocity of the weapon and all that within microseconds?

It just defies belief that this seemingly futile maneuver actually works, time and again! One of these days, I want to see someone pull that stunt, only to have miscalculated and wind up passing before or after the bullet/sword/alternative weapon and land roughly on the ground, winded, only to look up and find that not only did they make a fool of themselves, but the object of their concern got killed anyway. BECAUSE IT’S SO STUPID.

Why not at least launch yourself in the direction of the person you’re trying to protect? That way, even if you judged the distance and speed of the weapon incorrectly, your body will absorb the hit anyway- but in the best case scenario, you knock them out of the way and actually survive in the process!

Of course, the whole point of this maneuver is that the Character Dies Heroically. Which I get and if their number is up, that’s it. But couldn’t they die with a little dignity? Because that just makes me giggle and eyeroll like mad, it doesn’t make me respect them or mourn them to a greater degree.

I'm not in love with it- I have issues with comedy, it can be mean and I'm too protective of my favorites to be able to cope- but it's a very clever parody and I do enjoy how it mocks canon and how ridiculous the plot is. #1. Found Glee in the mail from odakota_rose. *squishes* Now I'm plotting to get the rest of my family into the show. *cackles evilly* I've just been stroking the pretty cover for the past week; I know it sounds creepy, but it's so shiny and new and squeeful! :D

#2. MY FATHER'S GOING TO FIJI FOR A WEEK, WOOHOO!
*happydances* A whole week without him! I am so excited.  ^_^

Yes, it sounds cold, but as much as I appreciate what the man has done for me, he's not easy to live with- FFS, he'll seize on any excuse to get angry; too many pens on my table, the tap not aligned at the proper angle over the sink, the curtains not closed at some arbitrary hour...it's gonna be blissful without him around. *sighs happily*

#3. Guess what? I walked into the library foyer and a desk laden with odds-and-ends caught my eye, with the sign declaring 'Free to good home: be quick before they're binned'. I saw a whole pile of junk and was about to walk off when these stopped me in my tracks.



I read these books hundreds of times in high school, and now I have my own copies! *bounces* I just wish they hadn't put those stickers right over their faces, but what the hell. Free X-files books, omgyay!

#4. ‘k, so why is Alexis wearing a ring on her wedding finger?



Is she hiding something from us? Maybe I’m being dumb and she explained it somewhere along the way and I missed it but wow. Either that’s a promise ring from a boy she’s serious about or she’s disregarding the convention that a person can’t wear a ring on that finger without it meaning something. I occasionally wear one of my rings on my wedding finger- heck, I’m never getting married and I’m running out of fingers, so what the hell?

#1. Oh, dear god. I wasn't going to watch SYTYCD Australia, or at least, not the auditions- but mother had it on and called me, just as a contestant auditioned with a song from the Labyrinth soundtrack.

O.o Freaky, no? The week I fall in love with this movie, some crazy fan shows up with a routine to one of the songs...but holy crap, it sucked SO BAD. I was cringing, this chick just totally made me want to throttle her for giving people another reason to laugh at sci-fi/fantasy fans. *glares* Oh, tv gods, just ONE person I needed to rock the routine so that I could delight in the fandom squee, but no, she made me ashamed to admit to loving that song. Ugh.

#2. Mentalist!fail.

Robin Tunney on the new boss- "It's another woman who's going to flirt with Simon and have power over me...I don't know if that's going to go well. I think there's going to be some jealousy and some power struggles. We're all going to have difficulty with it..."

Yes, I know I'm judging it before even seeing what they're going to do with this plot arc. But  after the way the writers resolved the R/vP UST and the Bosco thing...I've lost a lot of faith in them. It's getting way too desperate.

Tough call, there are a lot of books I love. But for the one that combines all the elements that I most adore into one amazing book, I'll say Ilona Andrews- On the Edge. Seriously, all the things I love to see in my heroine, all the squeeful aspects I enjoy seeing in my ship...it has it all. *dances* You should all read this book, it's made of epic win.

I do love the Kate Daniels books, but this one's romance/fantasy, so I got to feel like I'm reading something more intellectual than my usual trashy romances but still with Rose rocking the feisty banter and reluctant UST and badassery and culminating in a happy fluffy ending. :D

Okay, look, I completely agree that teacher/student relationships in RL just should not happen. Under any circumstances. Mitigating factors in fandom provide exceptions to this rule but the key word is FANDOM.

My love for Hermione/Snape in the Harry Potter!verse is one such exception and I refuse to justify it. But the thing is, this pairing mainly works for me because of the extraordinary circumstances they face, where all sorts of lines are blurred because of the situation they find themselves in. I would never ship a student and teacher in a show that’s more reflective of real life.  A show such as my recent guilty pleasure, Glee.

There is no magic, except what the kids create onstage. There is no war, except that which Sue wages on the rest of the world. It’s just ordinary, if talented, kids at an ordinary school with- okay, not exactly ordinary teachers, they’re all freaks in their own way, lol.

Still. Despite the chemistry I see between Rachel and Will, I refuse to ship them. REFUSE. They might go beyond the usual teacher/student dynamic- things get intensely personal between them, they have expectations of each other and engage on a different level than he does with any of the other Gleeks, but although I like both characters, that’s not reason enough to ship them.

That said, I feel kinda smug when I read that the original premise of the show? Totally had teacher/student sex. Because I so called it from the first moment I saw them together.

All right, I blame ed_84 who is the reason I’ve been tempted back to Legend of the Seeker.

I gave up on it halfway through the first season because it was all about Richard/Kahlan. I adore Kahlan, ‘k, mad love for that woman because she is the definition of awesome but I just don’t get her and Richard.

But ed_84’s icon of a hot blonde chick with the caption- ‘there is no theory of evolution, just a list of creatures Cara has allowed to live’ intrigued me. You have to be a certain type of fierce to carry that attitude off. For instance, you’d never see a pic of Jennifer Keller with that caption- unless it was in mockery.

So I researched Cara and fell madly, deeply, intensely in love. Jetgirl78 picspammed her and Kahlen over here- lots of shiny pics, so go check the pretties!

[Warning: I’m perilously close to shipping Cara/Kahlen now. I’m not ordinarily into femslash, but god. For these two, I’d totally make an exception. This is the fault of jetgirl78’s amazing picspam, so just be aware it might convert you…]

At the moment? You might be able to tell from my journal entry titles that it's Florence and the Machine's Blinding. Such a powerful, moving song. I can't even describe how it overwhelms my soul and floods my brain with pretty imagery and heavy concepts about independence and breaking free and empowerment and all that.
