'...don't make me be who I was, just let me be who I am...'
1 season one overview
format snurched from littlred.
Season One: "If the Plateau doesn’t kill us, we just might kill each other!"
Best Episode: The Journey Begins. The first ep has a special place in my heart, what with Roxton and Marguerite beginning their trademark bickering as thinly disguised sexual tension, setting the tone for the rest of the series. She throws down the gauntlet with that vicious nip in their first kiss, and he picks it up at first to spite her, to win her like a trophy, and then later despite her and the many attempts to distance them, because he falls for her.
Episode I Never Get Tired Of: Paradise Found. Oh, how I adore the hell out of this episode. Let me count a few of the ways:
* Marguerite and Roxton bickering like an old married couple- I love their early season arguments, when they could be insensitive and brutal and just let loose on each other, because it was fun, rather than angsty, as characterized their later arguments after they grew closer.
* Marguerite and that gorgeous red dress and hairstyle! Possibly my favorite look on her in the entire series!
* Marguerite giving in to Roxton, to his confusion and gentlemanly efforts to stop her- and being bitterly let down, ‘Nobody walks out on me!’ *huggles*
* Marguerite pulling her old ‘seduce-and-destroy’ routine to:
a) kill the leader with the most chilling, gleefully vicious expression EVER, oh I love cold!calculating!remorseless!Marguerite, before the others' morality influences her, and,
b) save everyone’s asses.
* And hey, they toast her and everything at the end of the ep! She gets recognition for once! *cheers*
Just a beautiful funny engaging episode, one where everything works, and it’s definitely on my top ten.
Episode That Never Happened: Well, Out of Time literally never happened. Although I’m confused because in Heart of the Storm, Roxton mentioned being aware that there was a possibility of her being the reincarnation of a druid priestess, so…I don’t know what happened with the whole ‘it will be as though we have never been here at all’ since she, at least, remembered.
I know Creatures of the Dark attracted a great deal of loathing, but even though I cringe at the underground-dwellers and their ridiculous homogenous lack of style or common sense, Marguerite was at her snarky best in this ep and there were some funny moments. ‘Who are you going to believe, me or that twelve-year old troll?’ *silence* ‘Thanks for nothing’. Heh. Although it irks me they decide to forget it ever happened, attribute it to a shared hallucination- I mean, all the weird, wild and wacky things that happen on the Plateau and THIS is hard to believe? Really?
But I have to say, the standout WORST episode this season, possibly ever, is Unnatural Selection. If there’s a crappy A story, I can forgive the episode if the B story is funny or engaging but come on- my options are Roxton half-assing a romance with not!Marguerite, who comes complete with identity crisis but overwhelmingly lacking in personality and ‘fire and steel’; or Marguerite, Malone and Summerlee being held captive by a fairy? Really, writers? There are fanfics better than this crap.
Episode In Greatest Need of a Borg Princess Edit: Um, Blood Lust, anyone? Yes, yes, I’m sure there are continuity points that could’ve been rectified or more important character or plot issues to be addressed, but this one gets me. Even if she thought she was dreaming and welcomed his advances at first, Roxton scared the crap out of Marguerite when he attacked her and I was anticipating an apology but nope. Wtf? We could’ve had less of bloody Calista and her irritating seduction attempts or of Malone trying to man up and cockblock ‘defend’ the distinctly un-helpless Veronica from her suitor to make room for an acknowledgment of that tent scene.
The thing is, Marguerite doesn’t seem to hold it against him and she’s obviously heartsick with concern for him rather than brooding over what happened, but that’s beside the point. The very fact that she isn’t upset or at all awkward after that incident, that she doesn’t regard it as at all important is what makes me want to hug her right now because it shows how she’s used to physical abuse from men and this is just another unpleasant memory to brush off. But Roxton’s supposed to be different and it just bugs me we don’t see him making it up to her.
M/R Episode of the Season: Prophecy. It’s like Resurrection was the dress rehearsal for this. Roxton’s gotten used to people playing games with his life [no wonder Death is so displeased with him, lol] and he’s come to terms with the notion of facing his end.
The scene where he begs Marguerite to kill him so she can live is so poignant and moving, as is her utter lack of self-preservation and rambling justifications for it, ‘What’s today, Tuesday? I never kill anyone on Tuesdays.’
N/V Episode of the Season: I admit, I skim past N/V scenes so maybe I’m missing something obvious here, but my vote’s for Resurrection. They never do resolve whether he’ll stay or she’ll go, but after their initial argument, they bond as Ned risks his life to protect her home from invaders and in the end, they come to a mutual agreement to enjoy their time together on the Plateau in a rather sweet toast.
Wild Card Award: Barbarians at the Gate wins for ‘Episode with the Best Parallels to Portray Character Growth’.
In a nod to the pilot, Roxton gathers up Marguerite in his arms to save her from walking with a leg injury, and this time, instead of her sniping at him and being unceremoniously dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes, they make with the cute banter, ‘Looks like I’ll have to sweep you off your feet’/ ‘Seeing as how the alternative is imminent death, you’ve got a date’ and she accepts the lift. Altogether now- AWWWW!

2 dreams of TLW.
The first dream was inspired by season 1 ep 6 of Criminal Minds, LDSK, in which, I believe, Hotch empathizes with the UNSUB in a hostage situation, pretending to despise Reid and kicking him repeatedly so that Reid could grab his gun from his ankle. In the dream, Marguerite was being held captive by slavers and Roxton was trying to convince them he was cool with their agenda, all, 'Yeah, guys, I'm with you on this, uh, women are so inferior to men', as he's kicking the hell out of Marguerite, 'They're like property to be dealt with as we please', so that he could distract them while she took his gun.
The second dream was super-cracky and random; it involved Roxton's ex-wife turning up on the Plateau...dun dun DUN. In the season 4 pdf, they talked about how Marguerite was swapped with a changeling or something, and although I'm not sure what that term was supposed to mean in TLW!verse, like a demon or just some other nice normal baby, the ex here was a literal interpretation of 'changeling'- she was a shapeshifter, and lured Marguerite away to dispose of her while taking her place with the others. :O I think part of it was inspired by Skin Deep, lol, I've been watching that a lot lately, clipping it for a new vid.
------------------
3 things that reminded me of TLW this week.
* A kids show yesterday asked the question, 'Which is heavier, the combined weight of the Veronicas or a velociraptor?' I was just about to switch to another channel and was like, whoa, RAPTORS? Hee!
* The SYTYCD group performance on Monday night- it was a tribal routine, like, some crazy hula/hip hop fusion, the dancers were kitted out in grass skirts and random ethnic lookin' outfits, and it was giving me flashbacks to Stranded, with Assai's people doing what I can only assume was a Zanga fertility ritual [what with the pornographic dancing, lol] for the imminent unhappy wedding. Also reminiscent of Danielle and her tribal dancing in Voodoo Queen...yah, the writers sure liked their tribal influences...
* Netty and I were watching Nectar on Tuesday, and the whole way through, we were like, 'Wtf is royal jelly?' because it was the Holy Grail for that ep. It didn't really matter, all we needed to know was that it was a cure for an otherwise fatal sting from an overgrown prehistoric monster bee. But considering that L'oreal has released a new product 'with the power of royal jelly', I think the question has become more important... :P
I laughed hysterically when the ad came on, just the timing...later in the year, I probably wouldn't have cared but a day of musing over what this royal jelly business is about and then this... *g*
----------------------
Random fact of win: the Zanga dialogue in TLW? IS TOTALLY SAMOAN! Netty was translating for me and basically cracking up laughing over how awful their pronunciation was and like, stressing the wrong syllables and putting the wrong emphasis on words...! Although, I might smugly add as a loyal fangirl, she said that Rachel was really good.
But yah, she was like, 'They're totally making up crap in some places.' I mean, there is no 'b' in Samoan, so 'Jacoba' is pronounced 'Ya-ko-po' or some wackness like that. [I don't understand how a language lacks a 'b', but there you go]. And apparently he was saying, 'Bring me my bird' in reference to Veronica, which I found much more hilarious than I should've. You had to be there, I was kinda hyperventilating with all the giggling...I love that I'm still discovering new aspects to my show all the time. :D

Aha! Here you go.

Oh, and lovely, it can cause allergic reactions- how much would it suck to use the beautifying products and end up with hives? [excuse my pun, lol]
But hey, lowering cholesterol and healing wounds? Unsubstantiated, perhaps, but that sounds pretty cool!

Royal Jelly sounds like something for kinky purposes....not that there's anything wrong with that.
[I don't understand how a language lacks a 'b', but there you go].
--hysterical. Why? I'm not entirely sure but it had me laughing. I'm probably just easy : )

I just love that out of all the cultures and languages the writers could've pilfered, it's one where I have access to a native speaker! I convinced her to watch it so we could laugh at how silly their portrayal of 'primitive tribes' are and I think I managed to get her hooked on the show in general. >:D *evil cackles*
Sadly, royal jelly is not produced for kinky purposes... the reality is icky and gross. I know, I know, I'm turning my nose up at bee secretions when I drink milk, but...still! I can't wrap my head around what people will do to look young!
--hysterical. Why? I'm not entirely sure but it had me laughing. I'm probably just easy : )
*squishes* It is silly [and I can say that, being half-Samoan] and I don't get it- I had the most frustrating conversation trying to work that language eccentrity out- so the only thing to do, really, is just laugh.
Oh, and wikipedia tells me it only has 15 letters plus three optionals, so it's worse than I thought... although it makes sense, actually, when I think about it: Netty's real name is Annette, and it's pronounced in Samoan as 'Ann-ekk-ee'; with the siblings, 'Sara' is 'Sala' and 'William' is 'Viliamu'. They swap around random letters, it's insane! *headdesk*

I only wonder why my country doesn't have the sense of humour of yours- here they just show the shampoo and announce it is new... no royal jelly fun ^_^
Dudette...long eema post, I approve...here's response part 1 - LOL
Have to disagree on the Best eps of S1 –
Cave of Fear is the best, imho. All that angst for Roxton, as well as Marguerite and Summerlee saving the day, FTW! Roxton showing that in spite of how she behaves is willing to listen to her “secrets”.
Episode I Never Get Tired Of: Paradise Found. Oh, how I adore the hell out of this episode. Let me count a few of the ways:
* Marguerite and Roxton bickering like an old married couple
Favorite scene for me, when they’re in Roxton’s room arguing and Summerlee interrupts them and actually tells them they sound like a married couple. Summerlee again FTW!
* Marguerite giving in to Roxton, to his confusion and gentlemanly efforts to stop her- and being bitterly let down, ‘Nobody walks out on me!’ *huggles*
Yeah, that’s all kinds of win. Poor Marguerite…wants him but he’s being the gentleman he is.
* Marguerite pulling her old ‘seduce-and-destroy’ routine
Actually I think Marguerite has always had a moral compass, until the Plateau, she never really had to use it to help others though. I don’t think she was killing Kieran for only herself. See…she did it to save everyone else’s asses.
* And hey, they toast her and everything at the end of the ep! She gets recognition for once! *cheers*
Marguerite FTFW!!!
Episode That Never Happened: Well, Out of Time literally never happened.
IT did happen…the druid’s made it feel like a dream and that’s what they talk about in Trapped (where Roxton promises to keep the secret
that they did itthat she’s the reincarnation of a druid priestess. Roxton even seems to think it was a dream in Trapped.I know Creatures of the Dark attracted a great deal of loathing
I don’t think they really forget, more like agree to pretend it didn’t happen to keep the
freaksunderground dwellers safe from the rest of the world where they’d surely be exploited. But I have to say, the standout WORST episode this season, possibly ever, is Unnatural Selection.
Have to agree with you on the
ApeA storyline, but I actually really enjoyed the B storyline.Episode In Greatest Need of a Borg Princess Edit: Um, Blood Lust, anyone? Yes, yes,
Blood Lust is the WORST eps of S1. Will’s acting OMG! He didn’t need proper vampire teeth cause he would have ruined them from all the scenery he was chewing.
The thing is, Marguerite doesn’t seem to hold it against him and she’s obviously heartsick with concern for him
Again, Rachel proves she is so much better at acting than most of the cast (save Michael S “Summerlee”) because her acting in this horrible eps was spot on.
M/R Episode of the Season: Prophecy.‘What’s today, Tuesday? I never kill anyone on Tuesdays.’
Have to say SQUEE!!! I love that scene…and then the scene where the baddy is basically trying to force Marguerite to shoot Roxton. Smug!Marguerite is full of win as well. I totally LOVE when she threatens to beat Isabelle with her shoe.
Wild Card Award: Barbarians at the Gate wins for ‘Episode with the Best Parallels to Portray Character Growth’.
In a nod to the pilot, Roxton gathers up Marguerite in his arms to save her from walking with a leg injury,
AWWWWW!!
True that but it’s also a sad, sad eps since they lose Summerlee at the end.
2 dreams of TLW.
The first dream was inspired by season 1 ep 6 of Criminal Minds
WTF?! Roxton would NEVAH really kick her…not even to trick folks.
The second dream was super-cracky and random;
Ah the changeling stuff from the write up. I think that in the case of the write up, the changeling wasn’t really a shapeshifter so much as a replacement of Marguerite. I think that like Veronica, Marguerite is tied to the plateau, but her parents some how managed to keep her away from it for fear that she’d choose the wrong side (Modrid’s evil side) in the fight to save the Plateau.
PHEW, got it in one!
Re: Dudette...long eema post, I approve...here's response part 1 - LOL
But I think my pet peeve is that Marguerite gave in to the illusion, I was hoping she'd resist- I mean, okay, I KNOW if I were her, under the effects of a hallucinogenic fungus, I'd buy it too, but like...it's just so painful seeing her believe this woman is her mother and wanting to think she was loved and cherished and then BLAM, she's told she's evil and should die. *wibbles* Frakking with her head and toying with her emotions like that is not cool.
Lol, your Summerlee love is showing! But yah, I'm rewatching these in mini-marathons with my cousin and it's just increasing my appreciation for him because like, he saves Marguerite and Roxton one ep, then puts his life on the line two eps in a row for Marguerite and then for Malone... *squishes him*
Favorite scene for me, when they’re in Roxton’s room arguing and Summerlee interrupts them and actually tells them they sound like a married couple. Summerlee again FTW!
*dies laughing* He's so cool, it's hilarious, like, 'Oh, I do hope I'm not interrupting' when he's just so transparently doing exactly that, and then the sly crack at them...*g*
I don’t think she was killing Kieran for only herself. See…she did it to save everyone else’s asses.
Oh, no, of course- I was meaning to put a cap there, which is why I did the a)/b) separation, but then I didn't get around to it. I didn't mean to imply that her killing him wasn't related to saving the others.
* And hey, they toast her and everything at the end of the ep! She gets recognition for once! *cheers*
Marguerite FTFW!!!
IKR?! I'm so caught up in resenting them for not respecting and admiring her more often that I totally forgot about the toast until I rewatched this ep! And was overwhelmed with glee! Marguerite FTMFW! *twirls*
IT did happen…the druid’s made it feel like a dream and that’s what they talk about in Trapped Roxton even seems to think it was a dream in Trapped.
I was confused because when I first watched it, I assumed they all forgot- hence it 'never happened' for the characters. But then it was brought up in s3, so...Idk.
I don’t think they really forget, more like agree to pretend it didn’t happen to keep the freaks underground dwellers safe from the rest of the world where they’d surely be exploited.
OHHHH. Thankies! I was wondering why the hell they'd go along with it, but I can see that. Although I'm surprised at Marguerite giving up a fortune in gold so easily. :P
Have to agree with you on the Ape A storyline, but I actually really enjoyed the B storyline.
If the B storyline were in any other ep, I wouldn't mind it, in fact, I'd probably like it a whole lot more- but the combination of crappy A + okayish B just resulted in the whole thing stinking for me.
Re: Dudette...long eema post, I approve...here's response part 1 - LOL
Cave of Fear is my all time fav let's learn more about Marguerite, eps. As to why she went where she did in the cave, I honestly believe because she KNOWS she was abandoned as a wee thing, she thinks it's her fault. That some how she is evil. She doesn't understand how or why she can read and speak any language with ease and it scares her. She's had no one in her life (until Roxton and Summerlee) who has accepted and loved her for who she is, secrets and all.
Lord only knows what she when through as Parsifal during the war. I suspect she had to kill (and didn't really want to) and hurt people. I think at some point she was in prison (see the scene with her and Askwith in S3 ender Into the Fire. They're talking and he mentions being in prison and military secrets and she tells him she understands and they don't talk about it again. There is a short lived look in her eyes (or it was my imagination) in which I got that it's highly likely that she was in prison at some point in her adult life.
Re: Dudette...long eema post, I approve...here's response part 1 - LOL
OMG, I am wracked with a burning curiosity about her whole Parsifal gig. I mean, how did she end up as this notorious spy?! *dies of frustration* But I am so in love with that twist though, it's so awesome that even before he knew her, Roxton was sacrificing himself for her benefit. Just...wow.
Ooh, I must rewatch Into the Fire, I wanna see if I can catch that nuance in the conversation. I admit, I've seen the ending of the ep more often than the beginning, because Roxton screwing up the big relationship talk frustrates me, and the jealousy thing is also irritating. But this ep makes me really like Veronica and Marguerite's friendship! I wish they had more 'good' moments, although sadly, they always seem to be at odds with each other...but that 'sister' comment makes me so giggly and bouncy!
Re: Dudette...long eema post, I approve...here's response part 1 - LOL
Re: Dudette...long eema post, I approve...here's response part 1 - LOL
[Lol, I was responding to the first half of your comment- and I just read the rest of it and have to laugh at how we've basically said exactly the same thing, ha!]
Travelers' is indeed the episode that summons the wrath of my protect-Marguerite-from-BS instincts. Mainly because Veronica spends all her time in season 3 mourning Malone, but when Roxton starts worrying about Marguerite, she just poo-poos the whole thing, like, 'let's get back to my Ned!angst, forget about missing Marguerite!' Who is thinking of their safety and ensuring they survive while Veronica's badmouthing her. UGH.
That black-and-white comment resonates with me. I think that's why I love Marguerite so much, because it makes her so much more real to me. Veronica doesn't understand the reality of life, there are no absolutes, and sometimes you gotta compromise for the greater good. Just because she's never been exposed to everything Marguerite has, she still gets to be naive and think the world operates by black-and-white rules when it doesn't.
I think their interaction in More than Human says it all. From memory...don't sue me, lol.
'Near as I can work it, there are two ways out of here- alive or dinner'. Marguerite forces her to put on that sexy dress, despite her protestations.
M: That's better.
V: Than what?
M: Being dead.
Something along those lines. Veronica's always on this 'all or nothing' quest, she lives by her code or she dies. Which is shortsighted and frustrating. Marguerite sees the larger picture and has the skill and mindset to manipulate people to achieve the best possible outcome.
Leaving aside Veronica, I was rewatching the season 2 opener, All or Nothing and ROXTON won some bashing points by making that crack about Marguerite, 'Looking out for herself as usual' when HELLO, she's scheming to ensure their release, and I believe nobody bothers to thank her. Hmph.
Re: Dudette...long eema post, I approve...here's response part 1 - LOL
Yeah, Roxton does mention Marguerite's penchant for looking out for numero uno, but he also knows deep down that she's also looking out for the rest of them. I think he mentions that cause it worries him that she's just as apt to do her damnedest to protect everyone as he does.
Re: Dudette...long eema post, I approve...here's response part 1 - LOL
Blood Lust is the WORST eps of S1. Will’s acting OMG! He didn’t need proper vampire teeth cause he would have ruined them from all the scenery he was chewing.
AHAHA! *snorts* Best visual ever, lol. And yah, in our marathon, I totally skipped Blood Lust. It was just too bad to show Netty, might've put her off the show. *shudders* 'WHAT IS THIS...FEEEEELIIING?' *dies of mortification*
Again, Rachel proves she is so much better at acting than most of the cast because her acting in this horrible eps was spot on.
She redeems the show over and over. Her awesome alone couldn't resurrect this stinker, but she made it palatable, anyway. That scene where he's confiding in her how the vampirism made him feel, 'communing with nature, blah blah blah', and he stops because it sounds stupid and she encourages him, 'No, go on- please...' It's just so- he has the bulk of the lines, but those few words make that scene for me. You can FEEL her compassion and empathy and my heart could just burst with how overwhelming all that emotion is.
Smug!Marguerite is full of win as well. I totally LOVE when she threatens to beat Isabelle with her shoe.
This ep is up there with Paradise Found on my list of favorite eps. Just sooo many good moments! And it's fun seeing all three ladies laughing together about the heart necklace near the end- it reminds me of her, Veronica and Assai in True Spirit, waving and smiling innocently. Girl power!
WTF?! Roxton would NEVAH really kick her…not even to trick folks.
OMG, dude, firstly, dream! Secondly, pretending to kick her! I'd never dishonor M/R by suggesting he'd actually willingly hurt her! He'd literally DIE first. It's just a ruse- I mean, all those scenes where actors beat each other up, they're not actually bruising and breaking bones and stuff, they're just acting, making it look good! [I kinda want to find someone and tell them to lie on the ground while I fake!kick them to see how easy/hard it is, lol]
I think that like Veronica, Marguerite is tied to the plateau, but her parents some how managed to keep her away from it for fear that she’d choose the wrong side (Modrid’s evil side) in the fight to save the Plateau.
I never understood the changeling thing. So, was baby Marguerite with her parents when she was replaced? Was she with an adoptive family? Didn't anyone notice her necklace was missing? Wouldn't the replacement Marguerite have also been called Marguerite and didn't this chick grow up near Roxton's estate and marry him? Wouldn't he at some point have been like, 'Funny story, I married a woman with your name- oh, but it was annulled, so no worries'.
I need to reread the damn thing, I'm utterly confuzzled.
ETA: And didn't Marguerite say, 'You don't even know if my real name is Marguerite' [and how I love Roxton's response, poor dude]- but what about her necklace? Did she think maybe it was a trick or just some random trinket that didn't belong to her?
And didn't someone pay funds remotely to raise her at the school/convent/whatever, like, where did that money come from? *head!splodes*
Re: Dudette...long eema post, I approve...here's response part 1 - LOL
Okay from what I understand of the S4 write up, it wasn't so much that the child who was to replace Marguerite was a changeling but more a completely different child to be raised by Marguerite's birth parents. Marguerite knows she was abandoned, she mentions in Legacy (I think that's the one) that she was adopted at around age 2, but it appears to me that at some time either the adoptive parents either died or never really wanted to raise a child and sent her off to boarding school after boarding school. I'm guessing that at some point she must have run away (in Brothers in Arms she mentions to Roxton that she was running from the Parisian police so she wouldn't get caught.
I think her locket is from her birth parents and they do truly love her. Why they weren't able to keep/raise her is up to ones imagination. I'm in the camp that thinks they sent her away trying to keep her safe from Mordrid's line of evilness. Apparently Marguerite is "The Chosen One". From what I've gathered, it has something to do with her helping Veronica save the Plateau. She apparently has the deciding vote (so to speak) on which line will get the rights to the power of the Plateau, the "Protectors" (Veronica and her mom's line) or the "Evil" line (Mordrid's line). She could go either way.

Maybe coherent stuff later? Gotta finish watching season one before I can comment on all these.

But I am made of fail- that thing that reminded me of TLW: the combined weight of the Veronicas or the raptor- HOW THE HELL did I pay attention to the RAPTOR part of the question and not realize, ZOMG, of all the people they could've compared, it was to a group called VERONICAs?! *headdesk*
