'...I'm so starstruck, baby, could you blow my heart up...?'

Saw Race to Witch Mountain on the weekend with Netty. *wriggles* Thoroughly enjoyed it and I am totally getting it on dvd- or making someone buy it for me. :D

I'm not even pretending it has award-winning merit of any kind, but who cares? The movies that win Oscars are generally weepy and tragic and involve people suffering hardship and loss and characters DYING.

This? Was just a lot of fun, kept me giggling throughout and is exactly my kind of favorite light-hearted popcorn entertainment.

I was a little nervous for it at the start. I was hoping like crazy that they wouldn't go overkill on the stereotypes, there have been a lot of movies where they push the cliche so far it just ruins my enjoyment of the show.

But the characters weren't OTT, I mean, the main baddie- Burke?- was all villainy and smug and malevolent without being cartoony, it was just nicely understated. That was the case with most of the cast, so I was happy.

The kids were a little wooden at the start, but I think that was part of the character, lol, and it was nice to see them loosen up a little as the movie progressed. AnnaSophia Robb, as Sara, strongly reminded me of Teyla for some reason! The whole 'alien chick with muted sarcasm politely enduring irrational human behavior' attitude was very reminiscent of Teyla, and amused me throughout the movie. Alexander Ludwig was a little one-note in comparison but come on, this isn't the movie you go to for startling levels of character nuance, so I'm giving him a pass on that.

Like the reviews said, it never made sense to me that these kids needed Jack. I mean, they broke into the car just fine and Sara takes over driving it remotely with her mind powers on many occasions, so the taxi driver is a little superfluous, right? STILL, The Rock was hilarious. I really really loved that scene where Sara demonstrated her telekinesis and is all matter-of-fact, 'You do not do this because you have not learnt how to access your full brain capacity' or whatever and his voice gets higher and higher, 'No, we don't do this because it's creepy and I'd really like you to stop it right now'. HEE.

I was ranting throughout that it was stupid they kept going in the taxi. The kids withdrew $15,000 in cash from an ATM, why couldn't they use these skills to buy a new car instead of getting some random mechanic to fix Jack's totally trashed, near-useless, potentially dangerously wrecked taxi? Considering that the government agents AND the assassin knew his license plate and could track the vehicle, it was stupid that he constantly drove them around in it.

BUT that was all forgiven in a key scene where the trio pick up Alex and take off in her colleague's car while he distracted everyone by going off in the taxi, leading the agents on a wild goose chase. That was so cool and it completely excused the previous moronic lack of changing cars. It set up a pattern of behavior that threw the guys off their trail, heh.

The assassin has to be the most inept, slack-ass terminator EVER. I mean, he repeatedly fires at the car but is incapable of leaving more than a dent? I mean, he firebombed the building and the bridge, leaving chaos and destruction in his wake, turning the sky red and ash falling in conditions of freakish climate change BUT THE CAR SURVIVES RELATIVELY INTACT. SERIOUSLY. WTF.

But he amused me because whenever I saw him, I kept thinking of Vala in supersoldier gear in Prometheus Unbound, hitting on Daniel and totally freaking him out! Hysterical! I love those two. So yeah, the positive association helped temper my irritation at his idiocy. It's a rule on tv that unfairly powerful antagonists must always hurl the hero around and bounce him from wall to wall instead of just calmly and efficiently snapping his neck. Jack should've died at least half a dozen times in this movie, but the terminator kept sacrificing expediency for irrational brawling. Does. Not. Compute. This was very reminscent of the super!Replicator bashing Cam Mitchell around in Ark of Truth. Just as pointless. If I'm ever in a position to eliminate an enemy, you bet I'd get it done quickly and efficiently instead of wasting time toying with them. *eyeroll*

And the best part of the movie...CARLA! ♥ *FLAILYFLAILFLAIL* I absolutely adored her in this- she was sarcastic and witty, she was geeky and cute, she was kick-ass and proficient...GUH. *swoons* JUST COMPLETE AND UTTER LOVE, YO. I'm so happy that she ended up playing a major part in the movie- because she wasn't in the ads at all which is why I hadn't realized she was in it til a few weeks back. And she ended up dominating it, in my [biased] eyes anyway, lol.

I loved her interaction with Jack, where she was sweetly, quietly mocking him. I mean, they're in a giant empty lecture room and he wants to go somewhere private to talk? Lol, the way she paid him and herself out at the same time, GOD, I love this woman.

I don't get why the reviews say that she wasn't relevant to the plot and it was all contrived- I mean, without her 'friends' to mislead the guys following them and to provide maps and directions and info about the complex they were trying to break into, the plo wouldn't have moved forward. She was SO vital, whatever. *sticks out tongue childishly*

I was uber-frustrated with Alex when she seemed to doubt Jack and got all pissy and shrill with him- then when she slapped him, I was like, hang on a sec...and sure enough, it was all a ploy on her part to distract the guards and then take them out. WIN. I loved her before but this cemented it. I always get angry with characters when they misunderstand each other's motives and don't realize when someone's bluffing but she not only saw that- in a guy she's known for less than a day!- but enabled his plan by acting up like she did. Mwahahaha!

That scene where she clears all the scientists out of the hangar bay, pretending to be in authority and facing down one arrogant jerk before kicking them all out, so she and the others can get to the ship! Priceless! *bounces*

You know what's odd? In this movie and also The Day the Earth Stood Still, they always make HUMANS the bad guys. I mean, the military is always trying to destroy the 'good' aliens that want to help save humanity. In a darker movie, we might explore how the seemingly good aliens were actually manipulating their human allies and end up betraying them and killing everyone- but thankfully, this is NOT that movie. I'll keep my fluff and humor, kthxbai.

There were two main criticisms I could make, but they're balanced by other positive elements:

* I wish Jack had been a little more proactive and picked up a gun to fire back at all the people trying to kill them. His entire purpose is to babysit and protect the kids but he mainly seems to duck and weave and run like hell. Then again, it could've descended into blood and guts and gore, which I'm not a fan of, so in the end, I'm okay with the level of violence they went with, after all. It's a kids movie and I guess they want to have a hero that DOESN'T blast the crap out of everyone.

* I'm in love with love, so a bit more romance would've been nice; otoh, it's rarely well handled in movies like this and I'd rather see Alex and Jack partnering up to help save the day and take out baddies and save lives than for a cringeworthy scene where they're alone together for a second and all of a sudden, they're frakking like oversexed teens. Can't stand that particular cliche, ugh.

I just adore the happy ending! [I thought it was funny when Sara asked Jack to promise her something- the cues pointed to a huge sappy moment and instead it was a request to look after the dog, Junkyard [?] for her! Ha!] I'm a sucker for things working out neatly and everyone living happily ever after! I don't care how unrealistic it may be or how many plot holes are created in the process, I'm glad the kids managed to get what they came for and save Earth in the process, and that Alex and Jack drove off into the sunset together. :D

@ [personal profile] chibi_tenshi24 - you totally need to see this movie. I loved it, 'tis awesome, YOU MUST WATCH. ^_^

OMG HI.
*spams randomly*
I wanna see this. Wonder if I can convince the family that my survival depends on hitting the theater...

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, if I can convince my jail guard parents to let me out in order to see this movie- this simple request necessitated a 'discussion', omfg- I'm pretty sure you can persuade yours. :D

[identity profile] odakota-rose.livejournal.com 2009-04-07 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. I wish... We'll see, my parents are a bit overprotective.

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2009-04-07 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, seriously, your parents won't let you out to see a movie? I mean, it's not even like it's Watchmen or something, child-friendly PG Disney movie here!

[identity profile] odakota-rose.livejournal.com 2009-04-08 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well they're paranoid. If I wanted to go to a theater, it'd have to be with one of them, and that would totally harsh my squee.
They're always quoting stuff about girls who get abducted and blah blah frakkin blah. It's not like everybody here gets kidnapped. Urgh.

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2009-04-08 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
*jaw drops*

Your- your parents are exactly like mine! Remember back when I was SUPPOSED to be going to Melbourne and mother was going to stalk me all across the city? [I still want to pull my hair out over not being able to go. *pouts*]

But seriously, it's freaky! My parents are always going on about how unsafe it is out there in the real world. I'm not allowed to go into my own backyard when they're not home, in case someone's lurking at just that moment and abducts me. And that's just ONE of the many paranoid rules they have in place to ensure I don't get preyed upon by the sick deviants that apparently roam our streets. *eyeroll*

[identity profile] sapphs.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
I downloaded it a few weeks ago and was entertained. I wasn't expecting anything deep. It was a kid's movie FCOL and like you said it was just fun. I loved the geeky!Alex! Reminded me of all the fangirls I've met (although we'd act way cooler if we met an alien. Or maybe not... Heh.)

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2009-04-07 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Ack, you and your d/l skillz! *envies* Well, I had a free ticket so it was worth going to the movies and seeing Carla on the big screen. *bounces*

Lol, I TOTALLY thought of fellow fangirls when she was babbling on about aliens and all, it was so very cute- but yes, we would be so much more calm and matter-of-fact if we ever met extra-terrestrial beings, I'm sure. Like, when the Rock was freaking out at Sara levitating stuff? I just wanted to thwack him- 'this is an awesome moment in human history, dude, try to be cooler!'

[identity profile] sunkrux.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Carla does the geeky very well. I LOVE her in the first Night in the Museum. When her character, Rebecca meets Sacagweea (totally butcherd the name...shame on me it's part of American history. LOL ). Geeky!Alex just made me squee on the inside (I had already gotten looks for my outward WOOHOO! when Carla's name appeared on screen). I gotta say I LOVED her hair cut for this movie. While this movie is not at all like the original it was fun and I enjoyed it.

Oh I LOL when we learn the Alex is apparently afraid of heights.

I like that they left it sorta openeded (watch the scene during the ending credits) so there could be a possible sequel (which I certainly hope isn't nearly as lame as the sequel to the original. Return to Witch Mountain was pretty lame).

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2009-04-07 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
I had already gotten looks for my outward WOOHOO! when Carla's name appeared on screen).

AHAHA! I don't have the guts to cheer in movie theaters, I'm always afraid someone will come and bash me, but I love the image of everyone giving you sidelong glances as you're geeking out!

She is super stunning in this movie, my attention was devoted thusly: 80% to Carla's awesomeness and 20% to the plot, lol. It was just so fantastic to see her on the big screen. *wriggles*

Oh I LOL when we learn the Alex is apparently afraid of heights.

Great scene! [Okay, so they're ALL great when she's in it, but whatever]

I was like, 'OMG, get out of the tunnel! It's probably the launch tube for a missile or something!' and then two seconds later, they had to scramble out to avoid a scorching hot demise. I'm proud of my ability to pick cliches. *beams*

Yesss, I enjoyed the end credit sequences, it totally sets up the possibility of a sequel. *prays the movie is a box office success* Would next year be too soon for a sequel? *iz greedy*

[identity profile] sunkrux.livejournal.com 2009-04-08 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
FIRST - LOVE THE NEW LAYOUT AND THE BANNER. But you probably knew I'd love it. LOL

As for geekin' out on Carla in the opening credits, yes I did. I'd do it again too. LOL

The end credits were cute. And if they make a sequel, they had better get Carla back as Alex or I won't see it. It's that simple. LOL

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2009-04-08 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Awww! *huggles* Thank you! It was actually a byproduct of my epic fail in accidentally deleting the old one, but I think it worked out quite well. I was absolutely enraged with myself yesterday, but now that I'm calm, I think this looks to be a case of serendipity! *twirls*

they had better get Carla back as Alex or I won't see it. It's that simple.

You know, it hadn't even crossed my mind that they WOULDN'T get her back. But now you remind me that I saw the previews for the second Night at the Museum and it has a new chick in it! I don't know what happened to Carla's character in the first, but I was surprised at the new face. If they replace her in this franchise as well, I'm so boycotting it. *nodnod*

[identity profile] sunkrux.livejournal.com 2009-04-08 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
yeah it sucks when you can't remember or delete your fav layout. Did you make the banner? It's pretty PURDY!!! :D

I saw an ad for the new Night at the Museum movie and was WTF?! Where's Carla? I won't be seeing it any time soon. *pouts* I'm guessing she was busy filming Watchmen or the Electra Luxx movies...or Race. LOL She has been rather busy lately. And now she's doing Desire Under the Elms on BROADWAY baby! :D

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2009-04-08 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I WISH I had the skillz to make something like that but no, it's by [livejournal.com profile] stratford_girl. The only banner I could find out there, and it sure came in handy. I think it's so cool that it matches the color theme of my layout, it worked out really well for something so last-minute!

Ah, well, it's okay if she was too busy to do it! She has been doing a lot of work recently. *wriggles* I just didn't like the idea that they replaced her for some wacky reason. *iz protective*

[identity profile] sunkrux.livejournal.com 2009-04-08 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ah...gotcha. It's still pretty. :D

I'm going with she's too busy to have done the new Night at the Museum OR she didn't like the script. Either way...I'm not seeing it. LOL

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2009-04-08 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I like that theory, I'm going with it, too. I'm betting it was the script, lol.

It's probably a good thing she isn't in it, so I don't have to sit through the damn movie. I wasn't a big fan of the first one, but it's a fangirl's duty to endure...

[identity profile] sunkrux.livejournal.com 2009-04-08 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I actually like the first one. :D But yeah, I've sat through some movies that weren't, imho, all that great, just for Carla. LOL

[identity profile] laurandbillever.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
sounds like a really nice movie... I'll dowload it some weekend.
I stopped carying about The Oscars a looong time ago.... about them and The Emmys- the people who give those awards are just driving me nuts....

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a SUPER fun movie and you'll enjoy it!

Yeah, I don't give a damn about 'official movie awards' anymore. A movie can win ten Oscars/Emmys etc. etc. and still bore me to tears. Or reduce me to a teary, emotional wreck and I DON'T ENJOY THIS. Give me a humorous sci-fi/action movie any day. :D

[identity profile] laurandbillever.livejournal.com 2009-04-10 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Humorous scifi mkovie is not my passion but scifi action is what makes my day bright ^_^ any suggestions? :P

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2009-04-14 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ummm....I don't watch a lot of movies, so I'm probably the wrong person to ask- I did like Next, Red Planet, Paycheck, I, Robot and Constantine. A few of these are old movies, but it's all I can come up with right now. If I think of any more, I'll let you know. :D

[identity profile] laurandbillever.livejournal.com 2009-04-14 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh- I, Robot and Constantine are one of my favourite... and Red Planet was fantastic, too! Next is something i have never heard of... I will check it out :) thanks!

[identity profile] chibi-tenshi24.livejournal.com 2009-04-07 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahah... if you're telling me to watch it, so I shall!!!!! :D

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2009-04-07 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
*feels smug* I haz power, yo. :P

[identity profile] lemon-tree-x.livejournal.com 2009-05-01 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
That's such a shiny review, your enthusiasm glances between the lines :). It had a lot fun reading it!

Btw, I'm like you, I don't expect a scientific dissertation when I watch such a movie. As long as the logic gaps are not too disturbing, I just ignore them.

[identity profile] borg-princess.livejournal.com 2009-05-03 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I wrote it in a state of fangirly bliss and I was like, 'I'm rambling, I know I'm just babbling away without a filter and I should really edit this in case people are all 'tl;dr' but damn it, I love everything about this movie and just talking about it makes me relive the enormous high of it all, so screw it, random babbling it is.' I'm glad you had fun, lol.

As a fan of sci-fi, I'm used to plot holes and inconsistencies and while I get much enjoyment out of making fun of the movie, I really don't mind, you know? It'd bother me more if the movie was 100% accurate and decided to kill Alex- well, more realistically, Jack should've died quite a few times there, not to mention the kids, assuming the laws of gravity and velocity and you know, getting knocked around apply.
