Don't worry. Will really loosens up after the first 2 eps. The first 2 eps are based primarily on the webisodes and they were taking Will in a totally different direction than the series did. Having seen the entire first season, I'm more than comfortable as perciving Will as a profoundly damaged and very bitter man whose soul was quite literally saved by his inclusion into Magnus' world. He's underused on the whole for much of the first season, but given him a chance and I think you'll find him fairly likable. (You'll also find that, by episode 4, he's ditched the glasses because the producers for sick of people comparing him to Daniel. He's really not much like Daniel at all.)
I can see where Ashley might strike you as being Buffy-esque, although I think you'll find that she really isn't. She's a loose canon, I'll grant, but she's WAY more responsible and serious about the job she does than Buffy was at her best (even if Ashley IS highly irreverent). Ashley understands that the stakes are life-and-death. And, unlike Buffy, Ashley never goes through a "but i don't WANNA do this job!!!" phase. Ashley LIKES what she does, She's a considerably darker and more intense personality. but she has a playful side in spite of it all (i've probably quoted this for you before)
Ashley: *is on her way out the door* Henry: "I thought your mom grounded you?" Ashley: "She did. I'm just... going to out to get... some feminine products." Henry: *smirks* "Feminine like a crate of uzies?" Ashley: "Dude. You want me to get us some new toys or not?"
and, later, after an arms dealer has described all the illegal modifications to an assault-riffle
Ashley: *laughs* "Sylvio, stop it! You're turning me on..."
or, when Will's trying to wrap his head around the things that go on at the Sanctuary
Ashley: "Oh, or, hey! Mom, remember the summer I turned 18?" *looks at Will* "We cleaned otu this ENTIRE den of werewolves--" Will: "Okay, now you're just playing with me." Ashley: *stares* "Uh... you got the tour, right?"
She's a lot of fun and, whilst profoundly messed up, not nearly as much of a self-destructive mess as Buffy was.
