Vampires.
I've been listening to the Kings of Leon track Closer [download here] on repeat the last few days. Fantastic moody song, but just sounding good isn't enough for me, I like to know the lyrics so I can a) sing along and b) ponder deep thoughts about the themes and metaphors and so forth.
I really hate it when bands don't include lyrics with their albums, I think that the amount of money they charge for a CD should cover the damn words to their songs. *frowns* There are a lot of conflicting verses on the internet and I can't figure out which one's right. Considering my family has been mocking me since my childhood for messing up the words to Macy Gray's Try ['I try to say goodbye...to my chook'. *facepalm* I love chickens, it didn't strike me as odd that someone would write a song to one! I was a kid, okay? Shut up!], you can understand why this might bother me. I am paranoid about being the butt of the joke, it's my mission in life to avoid this humiliating fate.
ANYWAY, I was really surprised when I found the popular opinion was that it's about vampires. I guess lines about running from the sun and bleeding people dry should've maybe given me a clue, but it's damn hard to figure out what the singer is saying, okay? I just love the horror movie theme and what a creepy vibe it has. *shudders delightedly*

Anyone read the Vampire Diaries books? Apparently there's talk it might be turned into a series. I haven't read it, so maybe I shouldn't judge but I am sick to death of stupid selfish teenage girls and their desperate attempts to hook vampire lovers and frakking mind-blowingly lame-ass love trianges. The show's been promoted with the premise of 'vampire brothers and their girlfriend'. Oh, whoop-de-frakking-do, how thrilling. A girl that can't choose between two vampires, this is the backbone of the show?! *gags*
If you want to read a great vampire series, try Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy. Original, exciting, and oh, look, the main relationship that's sustained over the three currently published books is the one between the heroine, Rose, and her best friend, Lissa. I just love that there is some female friendship being highlighted here, as well as romance and UST. For some reason, authors tend to treat snagging a boyfriend as the be-all-and-end-all in life, like having a close and loyal friend isn't important. Because all females care about are guys, y'know.
Bonus- there is actual plot in these books, small things like handling peer pressure and depression, and large-scale things like uncovering conspiracies and fighting bad vampires and all that jazz. Rose is a kick-ass chick, she has an actual personality [no bland, vapid Mary Sue is she] and many strengths as well as believable flaws to ground her in reality, plus? She is pretty damn funny. I was so into the books that when I found out I had to wait a few weeks for the library to get it in for me, I ended up going and paying for one! This is how awesome they are!

Hee, Troi- the main thing I remember about her is this overwhelming love of chocolate. *g* I don't know why, but it makes me think of Brenda from The Closer, those scenes where the women are just blissing out over their favorite treats, lol.

Yes, I did met her. I did it on purpose. Went to a Creation Grand Slam in Seattle specifically on the Day she was there, to meet her. She use to do choreography for/with Jim Henson (the
mangenius who invented The Muppets). So I just had to meet her. :D She was very funny and so nice. I just wish I could have gotten a photo op with her. :(no subject

You know, people always say that the actors are very nice and pleasant and great fun- I wonder if sooner or later, somebody's going to crack and go mental at a con, lol. Apart from the male actors drinking too much and getting tipsy onstage, they've been so well-behaved.

*cracks up* I'm sorry, I know you must really dislike her but...hee. That's blunt. :P I haven't seen TNG in a while but IDK if the problem was the character or the way the writers handled her. I think she could've been more awesome but they couldn't be bothered. I have this in a few of my shows, actually, where my concept of the character and their treatment in fanfic is vastly superior to the way they're portrayed on the show.

Yeah, he was but it was a really minor role. From what I heard it was more minor than we all anticipated it to be. (I haven't seen it ... but will!)
I still think he was the best for Scotty (though I'm sure the guy that guest starred in Doctor Who did fine, name I forgot), cause I saw a picture of the original actor (name also escapes me) and I could see resemblance. Also, he was even endorsed by the original actor's son. But alas ... :(

That's a quote off a tee that says all I have to say about the newest wave of vampire novels. This tragically-suicidal-girls-trying-to-hook-vampire-lovers reminds me of the Wraith Worshippers in the SGA fandom who insist that the Expidition are the interlopers and had no right to disrupt the Wraith who are "just trying to survive" and insist that Todd -- the exception to the rule -- proves that the Wraith are really just misunderstood. *snort*
Vampires and Wraith choose to eat people instead of finding an alternate food source. Unless you happen to be talking to one with a soul (Angel, Todd, Carlisle), stake the bastard. Problem solved. Because even if YOU want to die, the next person the vamp chooses to munch on might not.
Nevermind the obvious social commentary issues involved in portraying the heroine as a woman with no wish to live who masochistally falls in love with a man who wants to kill her. It's like creating the Future Abused Wives Club of America.

Vampires, I concede, but Wraith...I wonder if they can only suck the life out of humans or if they are physically capable of using alternate sources like cows or sheep. It's horrible but I kinda want to see what that looks like, it's just a really funny mental image. Poor cattle.

To be fair [I can't believe I'm defending the books], Bella doesn't want to die, she just wants to live forever- the death part of the transformation is only temporary. Although she's so pathetically addicted to him that if Edward flat out stated he wanted to kill her just for the hell of it, she'd probably lie down and bare her neck to him BECAUSE HE LOVES HER AND HE IS HER WHOLE LIFE AND SHE'S FINE WITH WHATEVER HE WANTS TO DO BECAUSE SHE'D RATHER DIE THAN DEFY HIM.
After all that, I worked out that you might've meant her willingness to be around him even though he can barely restrain himself from draining her of all her blood [seriously, the one chapter from his POV freaked me out- this dude is fantasizing about slaughtering everyone in the room so he can take his time and savor her sweet freesia-scented blood, FFS!] rather than her desire to become a vampire. 'tis rather fail!tastic. If someone says it's not safe to be around him, I'd run like hell and call the police about this mentally unbalanced psycho.
I love that SMeyer defends Bella and says she's independent and feisty and all that because she refuses to marry Edward. So, the girl's trying to jump him at every available opportunity though he puts her off, she's willing to abandon her family and friends to die and be resurrected so that she can spend all of eternity with him but she can't commit to marriage? WTF? Does. Not. Compute. She can always divorce him- although come on, she's so obsessed that'd never happen- but you can't un-vampire yourself!

That argument is bullshit and here's why: in four years (with a technological handicap!) the Tauri managed to come up with a way to make it possible for Wraith to eat solid food. In ten thousand years since the Ancients left, the Wraith didn't even try. The only experiments we saw them conduct were ways to make humans easier to catch or more tasty. Furthermore, the Wraith eradicated any human civilization that challenged them or that developed a level of technology that could one day rial their own -- not only ignoring evidence that humans were sentient but destroying it. And, as if that was not enough, when the Tauri handed Todd the very solution, Todd as good as said it would be difficult if not impossible to get his fellow Wraith to take the cure even with famine breathing down their necks. The Wraith would rather hop over to our galaxy for munchies.
Teyla and Ronon are right about the Wraith, which makes sense since they've known them longer.
