Sometimes there’s no right answer. What would you do if you had the power to grant a taxi license to a murderer? My gut reaction was, OH HELL NO, I don’t want to catch a lift from this dude, please, he killed someone. Okay, so it happened 18 years ago and because he was acquitted on grounds of insanity, he was locked up in a mental institution for eight years so maybe he got the treatment he needed and is all rehabilitated and ready to be a productive member of society.

So give him a chance. Give him the license. What else do you do, deny the guy the opportunity to make an honest living? Make the choice to re-offend not only easier but necessary because there’s no other way to get by? There’s something wrong with the system if it encourages criminals to commit more crimes because they have no opportunities to do the right thing. And yet...I’d be reluctant to get into his taxi if I knew his history.

Then I read that he’s trying to get money to put towards his son, who has leukaemia, and I think- wow, some people get all the bad luck. Poor boy, his father kills his mother, and now he’s got this condition to deal with. Keep punishing the father, and screw the son’s future in the process. Damn.

One thing that frustrates me about BSG is that Laura always ends up alone. I mean, the only real relationship she has is with Bill, but when those two clash- as they inevitably do- she’s left all by herself. Everyone else either betrays her or dies. It’s damn depressing, in a show that lives to chip away at her heart and soul every chance it gets, and my favorite President deserves much better than this.

I usually only read A/R fics but stumbled across this Caprica/Roslin BFF fic and it totally works! Beautiful, a little tragic and bittersweet, but ultimately hopeful. I wish we could have this on the show. Laura desperately needs a friend. And it’s so cute how they bond over their men, and their little manipulations, heh.

This is something I actually think about all the time as recidivism is quite high in the United States and I am sure elsewhere. It is so hard to get a job if you check yes on that felony box on the job application. People make mistakes, dumb mistakes, sometimes in youth and sometimes to belong. But should we really put a red letter on their forehead for the rest of their lives? Someone has to give them a chance. Now if they fuck up their chance, oh well, but they need a chance. I'm sure its a tough decision to make and it also has to do with what they did to land in prison but if we just want felons away from us, everyone should get life for every crime. Since that's kinda silly society needs to be better about letting people reenter. Some of that ridiculous amount of money spent on prisons should be spent on preventive measures for youngsters and reentry into society for former felons.

And I'm jumping off the soapbox.....now : )

That's so spot-on; if society isn't going to give them a chance again ever, then that's the logical corollary, right? And because it is a dumb solution, obviously something needs to be done to change the situation. But I guess it's easier to lock 'em up and then set 'em loose and not bother with them again til they've reoffended and need to be put behind bars again, than to try and make a difference and set them on a different course in life. I think some people make the mistake of dismissing rehabilitating offenders and reintroducing them into society as a waste of money or pandering or something, when it's not something that JUST helps them, it also helps everyone else in the community to be safer.

Soapbox speeches FTW! :D

Oh. My. Frakking. Gods. *stares* I could just EXPLODE FROM THE SQUEEFULNESS OF YOUR ICON! AHHH! Is it available to steal? I mean, I totally respect if it's not because that is pretty damn awesome, but...oh, I WANT.

And yeah, the Billy thing kills me. I can't bring myself to watch that ep. I own that season but I just can't watch it. I'd almost rather Lee had died than for Laura to be left alone again, lol. And you're right, she is so strong and she always perseveres and keeps going on, doing her job no matter what...she deserves EVERYONE'S love, damn it! ♥

Yay for squeeing together! *huggles*
