marguerite_krux: (scully-smart is sexy)

I’m not celebrating every single character I’ve ever loved, because there are only 8 days in this meme, so I’m selecting the ones with the most impact or greater prominence in my life.

After Xena, there was Maeve in The Adventures of Sinbad. All I can remember is their love-hate relationship [all my ships start off with the characters hating each other! LOL, what does that say about me?] and Maeve’s handy ability to throw fireballs. When I think about it, the show was similar to Xena and Legend of the Seeker, actually.

I became totally obsessed with Maria in The Sound of Music, watched that movie every day for months. My parents actually banned me from seeing it for a while because they were so disturbed at the level of my obsession. :O

But today’s much-loved character is a different redhead…

Dana Scully.

Scully was my hero in my younger nerdier days, the times when I actually liked to learn and display my knowledge and intelligence. She made it cool to be smart. When all the other kids sneered at you for being a ‘square’ and dismissed you as a teacher’s pet for having ambition, studying and volunteering answers in class, it didn’t affect me at all. What would Scully do? She wouldn’t let people stand in the way of her achieving her goals and doing well. So I was the Hermione of the class, with my hand up to answer the questions and contribute to discussions.

Scully inspired me to read ahead in my textbooks and try to learn on my own, she had me borrowing non-fiction educational books to complement our schoolwork. When we had oral presentations, I imagined being her, delivering a lecture, to boost my confidence and calm my nerves. In Bio, when all the other girls were squealing and screeching at how disgusting and gross dissections were, I channeled Scully in her autopsy scenes and calmly proceeded with cutting up whatever unfortunate specimen we were given. And oh, how I loved snapping on those rubber gloves… *glees*

I think the X-files have the record for most input in school assignments, lol. I did an oral presentation on them- my most popular one EVER; the boys in my class actually shushed each other up and hung on my every word, and this was the one presentation I memorized every word and had no need for cue cards.

I borrowed a lab coat and played Scully [shut up, I know I look nothing like her but whatever] for a video interview in some random class, I can’t imagine what it would’ve been.

And I wrote an X-file ep for my English creative writing- a sequel to Pusher. It was like, twenty pages, the longest bloody thing I ever did for school.

The X-files were also what helped me bond with Katherine and Jacob, my two longest-lasting friends. Sure, we may not see each other all the time, especially Jacob who goes to RMIT so he’s always in Melbourne while I’m in Geelong, but I’m happy to have enjoyed several years of friendship with them so far. Considering my average ‘friends’ last a few months, that is one damn good record. Their mother is a teacher at my old high school, and there were many half-days and holidays that we spent holed up in a classroom watching X-files and eating hot chips or cheese & bacon Shapes. I remember teachers seeing us hanging around school and shaking their heads at these crazy students turning up on a holiday, lol. It was a nice feeling, having seen nine seasons of X-files with them, to go to the movies in July and see the new movie for my birthday!

Today’s non-fandom-related thing that I am happy for…money! Specifically, I received a cheques from my old high school’s parent association, which was completely unexpected, to say the least. I’ve been at uni for three years, so it’s safe to say I wasn’t anticipating mail from them, let alone $63! [It’s funny how my horoscopes never get it right- they’ll predict amazing things all year but on the rare occasion I actually go on a trip or score a windfall, there’s not a single hint] I think the money was for some old school clothes I gave for the second hand sale years ago, and it’s cool that they were so honest about compensating me for the sale after all this time.
