Whee! Dollhouse is airing on Foxtel next week! *dances*
I wasn't all that interested when I first heard about it, especially considering the premise- seems a little squicky, reprogramming people to fulfil their clients' fantasies? Um...I'm kinda uncomfortable with it right now, but I'll wait and see if the show changes my mind. What did intrigue me is the lady boss- yes, I have a type, shush- Adelle DeWitt. She sounds awesome, and I am such a sucker for the tough woman who is all cold and ruthless and scary, while being a little bit tender and rather lonely on the inside. *quivers with anticipation*

---

Merlin woe. I knew this show was going to stomp my heart into the ground, but did it have to be so SOON?!

An article on the second season states that Gwen will begin 'her difficult journey towards becoming the Queen Guinevere of legend' and this con report mentions that the focus in the second season will be on the Arthur/Gwen romance- whoop de frakking do. *sniffles* The only mentions of Morgana are that her relationships with Gwen and Merlin will be developed. AWESOME. So everyone else except the one person I ship her with! God, I might have to switch and make Uther/Morgana my main ship if they're determined to shoot down my ship so early. I'd hoped to at least have another season where the writers multi-ship everyone and stray far and wide from the legends. *wibbles* Why be tied down by canon when they've disregarded and rewritten so much already?!

Googling brought me to this snippet of an interview with Katie McGrath- so at least, even if things are screwed on the shippy side, we get to see Morgana's abilities developed beyond the Medium-esque 'bolt upright in bed, shaking and breathing heavily in fear' after yet another nightmare. I hate how passive her 'powers' are, it'll be great to see her take it up to another level, although I really don't want her to become a full-on villain. I LOVED Nimueh, who was a very sympathetic 'villain' and totally didn't deserve that lame-ass ending, so maybe Morgana's gonna take on her role?

---

The Mentalist rambling:

I've been ruminating- and by ruminating, I mean pondering, not chewing cud- what is the significance of this scene? Jane is not Charlie Crews, he hasn't had some weird sort of fruit fetish established since the first episode, as far as I know...could it be that this is a hint of the direction season 2 will take? Instead of episodes styled in a red theme: Red Rum, Crimson Casanova, Scarlett Fever and so on, perhaps the new season will have a new color theme? Agent Orange, Tangerine Sunset, Death by Apricot...

-

*cracks up laughing* HOW AWESOME IS MY CAST?! *cuddles them* God, I hope we get some good bonus features on the dvd, I want to see more of them mucking around and having fun! :D

It's weird, though, watching this interview and hearing Simon Baker's Australian accent, it's so strong! And Owain, yikes, I never realized he had a British accent, it's hysterical! Just doesn't seem to fit him at all...it makes everything he says twice as funny, 'There's such a presence and ferocity of Lisbon in 'business mode' that- even though we don't fit in the same two shot [lmao!]- I've never felt anything other than her authority...'

ETA: The dvd release isn't til September 22! How am I going to wait that long, goddamnit?! Especially when I see that there is a gag reel being included... *glees*

Dollhouse had a great premise if it had been handled right, but you might want to save yourself the trouble. The execution is, imo, shit. The best characters are Adelle Dewitte, Boyd Langton, and (surprisingly) Topher. The Dolls did pretty much NOTHING for me (except last-minute addition Whiskey who was one of the few reasons i wanted the show to be renewed just to see HER cope) and the "good guy" FBI Agent quickly started to come across as more stalkerish than noble.

Had great potential because, as uncomfortable as the premise was to consider, it had these applications that were completely NOT "sex-slave for the weekend" but, when they did that (which was honestly more often than i expected them to), it often just fell flat more often than not. Echo's journey was too slow and disjointed and Caroline, when we started learning about her, was impossible to like, let alone CARE about. My advice is to save yourself the time and frustration. I REALLY wanted to like this show and those characters but the only ones i could find myself caring for were the supposedly morally-abhorant "captors" which i'd have been GREAT with if i could have gotten on-board with a single other character.

I will admit that I never enjoyed Buffy (except the very first season) or Angel but, after Firefly and Dr Horrible, I thought Joss Whedon had finally found his feet. Then this nightmare wasted 13 hours of my life. I think the moral may be that Joss needs to stick to Indy,,,

haven't seen The Mentalist or Merlin, so can't comment on those *hug* but, seriously, i'm not sure you should bother wasting your time on Dollhouse. not one person i know consistently enjoyed it

Gah. Isn't that always the case? Great idea, ruined by the execution. I'm probably going to end up fast-forwarding through most of it because I really have no interest in the Dolls [I like the idea of downloading abilities, like in Matrix or BSG, but losing your personality? Losing your free will? *shudders*] but I am so hooked on the idea of Adelle. I like how complex she sounds, even though she comes off as the 'villain' of the piece, since she runs the Dollhouse, I like the layers her character seems to have. I just wanna see if she matches up to my expectations.

I wanted to like Buffy but the doomed romances pissed me off. And the Scoobies, I really hated Willow for frakking up all the time, and Xander for being an arrogant insensitive jerk...I liked Spike, though. Too bad he didn't get a spinoff, lol.

*nudges* You should give Merlin a try. It's a nice callback to the fantasy shows of my childhood, like Xena and Hercules, even though it's more magic-oriented and less about battles. But still enormous fun.

Mentalist owns me right now, but I'm not sure how you feel about straight-up crime shows. It's the most normal of my obsessions, lol. I go from sci-fi/fantasy and land on this crime show with nothing more supernatural than Patrick Jane's tendency to hypnotize people to further the investigation. Hee.

Okay, Merlin starts here on 21 June, so I've got my DVR programed to record it. I'm looking forward to it. The pics you've posted imply that eye-candy shall abound. I might get annoyed if everything's too clean (that era was FILTHY irl), but I'll do my best to suspend disbelief.

Bones is about the only crime drama I watch and I watch that mostly for the Brennan/Booth interplay (HATED David as Angel, but LOVE him as Booth). When I got my psych degree, i also took like 18 credits in Criminal Justice and Criminology and did a lot of Independent Study on law-enforcement topics (i had aspirations in that direction but, for some odd reason, they won't take you if you're mentally ill ;p) so most crime dramas just annoy the HELL out of me because there's no way real cops would get away with the shit TV characters pull on a regular basis. If a police procedural were adhered even halfway to real life, it would get pulled off the air for low ratings within the first 30 minutes. Whenever I write in a fandom involving cops (like Witchblade or, too a lesser degree, Sanctuary) i always feel compelled to add lines like "You do realize that, if IA found out about this, we would both lose our jobs and do serious jail time?" ... Criminal Minds is okay, though. They very seldom break the law badly enough to annoy me

Buffy was a ridiculous show, I'm sorry. If they'd kept the tongue-in-cheek mentality, it would have been absolutely GREAT bubt all the doom and gloom was just opressive after awhile. The only character on the show worth watching was Giles (i love dark-beneath-the-surface academics -- did you stick with it long enough to see what happens when you make Giles angry?) and I wanted to whack him upside the head for letting Angel sniff around Buffy like he did. I mean, how is it NOT sick that a 200-year-old is willing to screw a 16-year-old? I won't go off on my usual rant on the subject, but it's SICK. You know, if she'd been 18 or 19 it wouldn't have bugged me, but just turned 16 is skeazy because she doesn't have the life-experience. There's no way you can FAIL to take advantage of a person that age when you're an adult yourself.

Adelle's amazing (I think you'll find Topher surprising as well before it's all said and done) and I don't even really see her as a "villain" because she clearly believes that what she's doing constitutes a public service. Distasteful methods, yes, but in the real world, good people sometimes have to do distasteful things and I'm just twisted enough to kind of get off on moral ambiguity (one more thing about Sanctuary that appeals). Adelle tries to be a good person, but her methods are disgusting and, like any human being, she sometimes lets herself be tempted. I read somewhere once "some men can be tempted to vice; others can be tempted to virtue" and that idea really applies to the Dollhouse staff.

Just ignore the vapid Dolls and the stalkerish FBI Agent and enjoy the dramatics of the staff :)

Dollhouse is really good. It takes a few episodes to get into, but then you don't let go.
And when they mean "fantasies", not all of them are sexual, if that's what you're squicked about.

I have the first two episodes of The Mentalist on my hard drive, waiting for me.. I hope its as good as my friends list says it is!

Hmm, that's what I hear, so I won't dismiss it out of hand. I didn't like the first episode I saw of quite a few of my favorite shows [Stargate, X-files, TLW] and then ended up utterly obsessed, so you can never tell.

Oh, yes, it was the idea of these women being brainwashed into being sex toys that I was really squicked over- I get that they volunteered or something, but it seems like...I won't say rape because they consented, but it still seems like a violation. The ads look super damn cool, though, they were showing Eliza Dushku being a negotiator and fighter and all these different things...that idea I love. And the music! I swear, the main reason I've set the show to record is because of the music on the ad, it's sooo haunting and I can't get it out of my head. Well done, advertising people. :P

Mentalist! I do hope you enjoy it! If you ever need someone to squee with, I'm totally here for you. Because I adore this show with an overwhelming passion and I am hiiiigh with love for it. I liked the first few eps but I didn't get absolutely obsessed til about halfway through- the shippiness kills me dead. *keels over*

Oh, I don't want to nag you or pressure you into anything, but you really should check it out! Especially if you like Simon Baker! His character's so charming and funny and yes, a bit arrogant and sometimes an ass, but the team interaction is a lot of fun and it's such a wonderful twist on the whole crime show formula.

It's not hard to understand, even if you do come in half-way, it's about Patrick Jane going around using his spooky skills of observation and perception to figure out people's secrets and help the CBI solve cases. A lot of times, the team's his back-up when he pisses people off and they try to kill him, lol. Very entertaining, and lots of ship! I'm so thrilled at a show that actually OVERWHELMS me with shippiness rather than carefully measuring out teensy little portions that you've gotta squint at in the right light to see as ship-friendly.

Ha, thanks! I'm thinking, well, that orange scene had to mean SOMETHING, right?! Or maybe it's just an example of over-analytical fans reading too much into it, lol.

I have to say, the orange theme makes me more hungry. Red is associated with things like blood [Bloodshot] and guilt [Red Handed], while orange is all about yummy fruits...

OH, the CAST. *squees all over again* I'm bubbling over with love for them! You know, I really couldn't care less about the price- I get dvd vouchers for my birthday and Christmas every year, lol, although I would TOTALLY pay $60 if I meant I could get my hands on it NOW, want it so bad... *pouts*

Hee, Stardust is one of the best fantasy movies ever. Hollywood keeps making craptastic movies in this genre and I give up...then they make Stardust and I forgive them everything because it is so fantastic!

Dollhouse!

Oh, you'll love Adelle, you really will *nod nod* and you'll like it, I think... I mean, the first few episodes had me all, "Meeeeh!" But then I was all, "Oh, Joss, you are EVIL! AWESOME! EVIL! AAAAH!"

Damn. Now I feel like watching Merlin (but, of course, highly unlikely). Morgana was always my favorite character in the legends, and I always felt prissy when they described her as an all-out villain. Nya!

Mentalist. Another show I failed to watch *is made of fail*

Stardust! Can you believe that's the only movie I like MORE than the book? Why? The movie has something the book doesn't. ROBERT DE NIRO.

Yes, the book has his character making a slight appearance, but nothing too big, and that scene is just AWESOME! XD

Also?

*hugs!*

Ahaha, I'm not sure I like the sound of this- it reminds me of BSG, with the whole 'YOU SUCK! YOU WIN! YOU SUCK' back-and-forth all the way throughout the series. Oh, the writers love making us collectively spaz out and rage and then flail and glee and back again...I know I'm gonna get hooked on Dollhouse anyway, because I have no willpower and I don't ever waste energy on trying to escape new fandoms, hee. I'm addicted to addiction, methinks.

Oh, gag. I just looked up Merlin to see when it was coming out on dvd and it's frakking $35 for volume 1. That's almost as much I pay for a season! I hate the British way of packaging their series, honestly. I'm going to get a non-official copy of it, then. It sucks, I used to be able to burn dvds on my laptop but then I dropped it on its side *shameface* and the thing's broken. Selectively broken, mind you, it'll burn CDs but not DVDs. How's that make sense? Pfft. I think my laptop is the anti-Spock, it's completely illogical.

Morgana is absolutely gorgeous and snarky and wonderful. Sadly, the show is dominated by Arthur/Merlin, but she's so awesome. And I'm getting more and more into the idea of her going off and doing her own thing, developing her powers and all in the second season. The writers have been pretty good about respecting ambiguity- nobody's all out evil, everyone has motives for what they do, so I'm praying they'll treat her well.

Mentalist! YOU MUST WATCH. @.@ *hypnotic eyes* It has some serious squee, yo. There is eye!sex, hand-holding, face-caressing...*melts* And it makes me laugh all the time, it's just the funniest thing.

/pimping. I've gotta do that because I adore it so, but you're not made of fail for not watching it, sweets. :P Just hope you don't get sick of me spazzing out about it because it owns my brain right now.

Btw, I giggled a little when I first started watching the show because the main dude's Jane- Patrick Jane- and I was remembering Firefly's Jayne and River making fun of him- 'Jayne is a girl's name'. *cracks up* Seriously, did they call him that just because it's so exactly the opposite of his character, all macho and aggressive and muscly and ROOARRR, I AM MAN.

Huh, I forgot that Stardust was adapted from a book [did I ever know that? *ponders*] My friend bought the book for her brother and I was surprised that it had pictures in it, like a children's book, except I flicked through and saw pictures of naked witches, so...not quite your average kid's fairytale, lol. [She also bought a book of recipes derived from movies- the Hannibal Lecter special was most entertaining. *g*] I don't think I'll read the book, it's supposed to be darker than the movie and what I enjoy most about it is the light-heartedness and its whimsical nature and ROBERT DE NIRO. *bounces*

*hugs back* I'm not sure what it was for, but you can never have too many hugs. ^_^

Yeah, never got to watch BSG either *hides* but I think it could be something like that, yes.

o.O Damn. Maybe your laptop is a Spock from yet ANOTHER Alternate Universe/Reality? *spock* Not Spock Prime or Uhura's Spock (*giggles* Uhura's Spock), but a permanently Pon Farr afflicted Spock with no hope of release (as in, fixing and upgrading and the like)? Who knows... whoa, your laptop suffering from technological Pon Farr. Excuse me while I go smack myself from the cracktastic stupidity of that statement.

Oi. I am not surprised about the Arthur/Merlin craze. Kind of reminds me of John/Rodney (SGA), which, I was totally fine with (and still am) to the point where I read fic, and wrote one (JUST ONE), but... then... I saw how crazy the fandom behind that was... and I hid behind Lizzie's beautiful shape and cried until she pretty much went all dominatrix on John, and all was right in the world *nod nod* Don't ask. It makes more sense in my head.

*SNORTS* Okay, Mentalist and Lost World, added to the list! YIKES!

o.O JANE? He's called JANE? LOL

Oh, yeah, the book even has some... sexual bits, but nothing overly descriptive (I've read better). Chianti with fava beans? Or some such *SNORTS*

Awww, I am a hug giving person! *tackle!glomp!cling!squish* Ask anyone. I give them for free, and for no reason at all *hums away*

Dollhouse has a potential .. but I think it's not handled very well.. I'm with you I LOVE Adelle besides I love how they make her talk in HER original tongue.. I Love Brits.. and Boyd too .. but see the concept of the Dollhouse is interesting in a way .. In early episodes I LOVED the Trust relation between Boyd and Echo.. plus the episode where Adelle imprints Victor with someone I think is her husband and they have this sword fight.. that was so wonderful..

your idea of The Mentalist cracked me up .. and then every new season will carry a different color..lol .. but when you face death you stuck with nature more.. appreciating it .. so it's kind of a way that he want to feel alive..

I'm so pissed of about Life being canceled .. *cries in a corner*

anyways, wanted to ask you if you'd recommend Merlin for a summer holiday.. it's coming up in 3 weeks and I'm planning to catch up with some TV shows..

I'll give it a chance. I need something to take my mind off things, lol, and even if it's irritating, well, I'll have fun screaming at the screen and calling them nasty names. *g*

It's nice that the actress doesn't have to hide her accent. I love accents! [How funny would it have been to hear Rigsby with a British accent?!]

*jaw drops* OMG, SWORD FIGHT?! *squees* Adelle is increasingly awesome and I haven't even seen her yet!

Ooh, way to take my idea a step further- at the end of season 2, Jane will eat some blueberries. Lol. And the new season will be about ...*g*

I'm sorry about Life, sweetie, that's tough. I've suffered a lot of disappointments and it never gets any easier. *huggles*

I'd totally recommend Merlin! As long as you don't get too nitpicky about history and canon, because they mess around with the legends A LOT, but it's quite funny and very entertaining and boy, there is superb eye candy. :D Lots of pretty people abound, heh.

Adelle is awesome. She would be my favorite character had Dr. Saunders (Amy Acker) been around to challenge the title.

There is one scene towards the end of the season that will prove just how awesome she is (not to ruin it, for you).

Our cast is so ossum *nods* Taking that red -> orange this one step further: maybe it's kind of like red = ALRM orange = Alarm. A little more mellow or something?

Also, ugh about the Merlin S2 spoilers. I was so hoping they wouldn't go the traditional, boring route.

Huh. *muses* Interesting idea. Jane's a lot more mellow, I can see that. It'd be funny if the writers really didn't have any thematic reason for shooting the ending the way they did, 'Oh, here's a random orange tree, let's leave it on an environment!yay note' or something.

Second season woe. *sighs* Lots of that going around, grr. I'm resigned to them following tradition now- I'd hoped not [way to shoot down my ship, PTB] but I do want to see powerful!Morgana, rather than this passive woman with no control or anything. And she's not going to be evil, imo. It'll be like Wicked, she's just unpopular and misunderstood, like Nimueh. *misses her*

Hehe, when I first watched that interview with Owain I remember cracking up at the even though we don't fit in the same two shot bit! I love Owain's Welsh accent. I think he does a remarkably natural American accent.

Yeah, ending the finale with that orange scene kind of bothers me too. I think they wanted to show him relaxed an at peace with himself - at least for the time being - and apparently him picking fruit from the victim's orchard was the only way to do it ....

His accent doesn't fit him, I'm sorry, I know that sounds mean, but that's the only thing I could think! So posh sounding, ha!

I don't know, maybe it was about renewal and things coming to fruition in good time or something? Would've been more meaningful if he, like, picked an apple [a RED apple] and then it was rotten and a worm came out of it, because then we'd be all, 'Ooh, ominous undertones' but a happy bright little orange...yeah, all I get is relaxation and peace, so hmm.
