RL whinge:
I just want to get this off my chest.
I think I’m holding on out of habit.
Katherine and I have been friends for about eight years. I love her…and I think that’s the problem. She tends to be dismissive of the people that truly care about her; once, she was complaining about some friends that ditched her and I tried to make her feel better.
‘I love you.’
‘Yeah, but that’s unconditional love, so it doesn’t count.’
>_<
It’s like the people that are difficult, that are ‘fair-weather friends’, that cause drama and conflict, those are the people she wants to make the effort for- like, because they make it hard, it must be worthwhile or something. People that just love her, well, they’ll always be around so why bother with them, right? No, literally, that’s what she told me- ‘You’re Annie, I know you’ll always be there’. Way to make me feel appreciated.
So it’s been a couple months since we’ve seen each other. I still have the Christmas presents I bought her and Jacob [her brother] and after I text her to see if I should just wrap them for their birthdays instead, we finally get a day sorted to meet up and exchange gifts.
Now, it’s February, so giving gifts may seem redundant, but a month isn’t really that bad, considering her track record.
What bugs me more is that she promised she’d give me my birthday present with the Christmas one- she told me ages ago that she got me a ring for my birthday. I didn’t really want more jewelry, but she insisted that for my 21st, she had to get something special. So, okay, cool.
Except my birthday was in JULY. And now, nearly seven months later, still nothing.
It’s in her room, somewhere. [Her room used to look like a bomb went off in there, so the ‘lost in my bedroom’ excuse rings true] I’ve seen her a few times over the past few months, been at her place a couple of occasions, and each time, she’s acted chagrined and assured me she’ll look for it.
Now she’s moved out of home and in a weird power play with her parents, she can’t go back home for the next few months. [Even though they’re not at home for a few weeks at the moment because they’re off somewhere, for work, I think]
And I just think- fuck the ring. It was never about the ring. It was about me wanting to feel like I matter to her, that she’d go to the effort of cleaning up her goddamn room to find a present she apparently already bought for me. I mean, the girl moved out of house, she cleared out most of her belongings, but she can’t use that opportunity to locate the damn thing?
I just feel so small and insignificant. She’ll go all out for her other friends, spending ages personalizing little knick-knacks for them, getting lavish gifts, taking them to concerts and all that, but Annie…well, she’ll be fine, she can wait, it doesn’t matter.
Even when we finally hang out after months of nothing- well, the girl’s got a life, you know, heaps of friends, boyfriends/ex-boyfriends, parental drama- I get about 5% of her attention. We end up spending the morning going shopping for groceries, and most of that time, she spends ordering Chris around [he’s the ex, who she dumped for being ‘too needy and clingy’, yet she keeps him around to grab her groceries, take her clothes to and from the Laundromat, drive her to different places, etc].
Then at her place, she’s tidying up and showering and a million different things- she sits down for a few minutes before bouncing up to go take care of something. So while she’s off doing her own thing, Chris, Jacob and I bond over Merlin. Those guys are funny. [Gwen gives Merlin a flower: ‘she wants to have sex with him’/Gwen gives Morgana a bouquet: ‘they’re lesbian lovers!’]
But hey, leaving aside the lack of any significant interaction, at least I actually got my Christmas present. Dogma. A dvd she got off e-bay. Used, with a whole lot of scratches. I should feel happy, because I love that movie, but at the moment…my reaction’s more of a ‘huh, shitty copy of a dvd that was going for $15 at JB Hi-Fi. How cheap does she want to be?’
Thank god for LJ. I just don’t think I’m cut out for friends in real life.

Fandom yayness:
Surprisingly, I'm reading a Harry Potter fic that isn't SSHG. Quelle surprise! I just devoured 44 chapters of Arsinoe de Blassenville's The Best Revenge. It's a Snape-mentors-Harry story and by god, it sunk its claws into me and would not let me wrest free.
This fic? Is what I wish CANON was like. It's infinitely SUPERIOR to canon and not in a fanfic way, but literally like it could've been published. I would've paid money for this fic, seriously. It fixes everything that I had a problem with in the books and surpasses them in terms of making Harry more likable and sympathetic. The boy actually studies and tries to achieve things and learn spells! Who'da thunk it? Also, Harry genuinely cares about other people and tries to help- canon!Harry is stunningly lacking in empathy or compassion.
And there is character development! *gasps* The amazing thing is that Harry and Draco are friends in this fic but Draco isn't whitewashed til he's unrecognizable- given his upbringing, he has the same inevitable prejudices and flaws as in canon, but we get to see the positive effect Harry has on him in such a believable way. There is compromise and 'agreeing to disagree' instead of Draco miraculously converting to Muggle-lover in a heartbeat.
The best thing about the fic is the way that kids from all four Houses form friendships, and we have the core quartet that includes Draco and Hermione and Neville and makes it seem realistic that these very different kids would hang out with each other and actually grow to like each other over time, going from distant tolerance to real friendship.
And I won't babble about how much I love Snape in this. *bounces* Just take it as read, yo. ^_^
If anyone knows any epic-length mentor!Snape fics, rec me? Preferably gen!fic with no major ships [especially not involving Hermione, as I doubt there exists a perfect fic that has 'Severitus' plus SSHG]. I don't want to go looking because I'd have to wade through the Snarry fics and my brain does not need to deal with that.

You know how I love to compare and contrast Castle/Mentalist. We’ve had the female cop/male consultant post and the Patrick Jane/Kate Beckett post…now there’s a different theme.

Castle 2 x 15- Suicide Squeeze

Roy: Sure you got no cop in the Castle family tree?
Castle: No, us Castles are mostly con artists and circus folk.

Roy: No, I think there’s a little cop in there somewhere.

Beckett: Con artists and circus people, huh?
Castle: Yup, and mind readers.
Beckett: Really? So tell me what I’m thinking.

Castle: Ah! You’re thinking…you don’t care and you want me to stop talking.
Beckett: Ooh, that’s uncanny.
Mentalist:
The above conversation calls to mind interactions between Jane and Lisbon in no less than three different episodes!
CARNIVAL/CIRCUS [pot-ay-to/pot-ah-to]
1x 06- Red-handed
Jane: Everyone's palace is different. It has to be big and detailed and vivid. My palace is a mid-western carnival circuit I used to travel with my father.
Lisbon: Your people are carnie folk. You're finally starting to make sense to me.
MIND READING
1 x 09- Flame red

Jane: Now I have access to all your innermost thoughts.
Lisbon: Yeah, right.

Jane: I'm serious.
Lisbon: Okay. So what am I thinking right now?

Jane: You're thinking, I'm so glad Jane is joking around and he can't actually read my mind.
Lisbon: No. Well, actually, yes, but not for the reason you think.

Jane: What reason do I think?
Lisbon: Never you mind.
Rigsby: You're blushing.
Jane: You are blushing.

UNCANNY
1 x 18- Russet Potatoes
Lisbon: Is there a word for ‘uncanny yet irritating’?
Yes. I’m reaching particularly wildly with this. But come on, I’ve only heard the term ‘uncanny’ used twice on tv in the past year, so I choose to think I’m justified in linking them…it takes a talented mind to weave all these together, am I right? :P

There are a few moronic clichés that make me laugh myself silly or shriek til I’m hoarse every single time.
One of them is the ol’ ‘noble character throws themselves between another character and object of impending death’. Why why WHY, for the love of fandom, do these people hurl themselves through the air? How can they POSSIBLY calculate the correct angle and trajectory and factor in the wind and velocity of the weapon and all that within microseconds?
It just defies belief that this seemingly futile maneuver actually works, time and again! One of these days, I want to see someone pull that stunt, only to have miscalculated and wind up passing before or after the bullet/sword/alternative weapon and land roughly on the ground, winded, only to look up and find that not only did they make a fool of themselves, but the object of their concern got killed anyway. BECAUSE IT’S SO STUPID.
Why not at least launch yourself in the direction of the person you’re trying to protect? That way, even if you judged the distance and speed of the weapon incorrectly, your body will absorb the hit anyway- but in the best case scenario, you knock them out of the way and actually survive in the process!
Of course, the whole point of this maneuver is that the Character Dies Heroically. Which I get and if their number is up, that’s it. But couldn’t they die with a little dignity? Because that just makes me giggle and eyeroll like mad, it doesn’t make me respect them or mourn them to a greater degree.

LotS 2 x 10- Perdition.

I have major issues with the penultimate scene.
x:x:x:x:x

Firstly, evil!T’Pol’s arcs of electricity are spiking all over the place.

Even if someone bodily blocks her shot, surely she can shoot it over their head and down onto Kahlan? Or is the idea of a parabola beyond her intellect? As these caps show, Kahlan could’ve been hit anytime before Leo nobly sacrificed his life in a dumb-ass maneuver calculated to be stupidly heroic.

I like Leo, but that move of his? Only works because the Dramatic Laws of Wibbly Self-Sacrifice demand it, not because it could realistically succeed. I mean, the lightning has to GO OUT OF ITS WAY to fry him! First it's over his head, then beneath his body, and it needs to reposition itself in order to zap him, wtf?

Secondly, T’Pol has all that time between Leo’s crispy frying and Richard’s return to zap Kahlan.

Cara's grief-stricken, Kahlan's a sitting duck...
Why does she pause? Apart from dramatic effect, there is no reason she couldn’t have let loose a bolt right then and ended Kahlan.

Thirdly, she waits for Richard to enter stage left and take up position between her and the ladies- and she tries to zap him. Um, hello? The Keeper needs Richard alive to fulfil the prophecy! Killing KAHLAN helps your master, killing RICHARD foils his evil plan? Wtf, woman?
And then- this.

Leo dies for nothing? He could’ve used the Sword of Truth to fend off the lightning instead of being a human body shield? *facepalm*

I will admit, though, that this shot of the three ladies is made of epic win. Do we need Richard? Really? Can’t we keep Verna instead?
ALSO. Note the lack of woobie!Kahlan whimpering about the people that have died for her. Richard and a few other headdesk!inspiring heroes *cough* HARRYPOTTER* cough* could stand to learn a bit about poise and dignity from her. She doesn’t like it, but she’s a pragmatist and she deals with it minus the annoying angsting and temper tantrums. GOD, I wish this show was called Legend of the Mother Confessor instead.
x:x:x:x:x
Btw. You know what’s sad? I only just realized the pun from Heroes- Elle, who was able to wield electricity? Elle/electricity=Elle-ctricity? God, I can’t believe that only just hit me. *facepalm*

I recently discovered A Very Potter Musical. I'm not in love with it- I have issues with comedy, it can be mean and I'm too protective of my favorites to be able to cope- but it's a very clever parody and I do enjoy how it mocks canon and how ridiculous the plot is. The following clip contains my favorite song of the whole show: Granger Danger! It's so catchy and I've been singing it over and over...
'I'm falling in love, falling in love, falling in love, I could be falling in love, falling in love, falling in love with Hermione Granger...'
Draco and Ron are hysterical.
Ron: God, why don't you just give her a break for once, okay, Malfoy?
Draco: Why defending her, Weasley? Have a crush?
Ron: NO, no...why all the insults, Malfoy? Covering up a crush?
And the lyrics!
Ron: Strange how a dress can take a mess and make her nothing less than beautiful to me...
Draco: What? What the hell is this, you expect me to sing about her? Don't care about her. It's just a little make-up, Draco, wake up, you're mistaken...
*gigglefit*
[I d/l the soundtrack but most of the songs are Voldemort or Voldy/Quirrel. I'm not sure if there are other songs besides the ones on the soundtrack, let me know if there are?]

Date: 2010-02-23 02:18 am (UTC)Kahlan is hands down the best thing about LotS. Richard could still hang out as her love interest, but I wanna see HER lead. She's so much better at it...really! And Cara is her awesome-tastic snarky sidekick!!! haha.
I miss her curls too... I like the new outfit, but I still miss the old Kahlan. I'm greedy, I want it all! They've gone overboard with the makeup this season. She doesn't need it! I LOVED her freckles for gods sake! Why cover them so much??? *pout*
(no subject)
Date: 2010-02-23 02:52 am (UTC)ITA. *eyeroll* He's like Harry Potter, even when he screws up big-time, HE'S STILL RIGHT because he's the CHOSEN ONE.
He doesn't make me as capslocky as he did in the first season [I wanted to throttle that ungrateful jerk- Kahlan kept trying to help him and he kept disregarding her advice and running headlong into danger and making her work overtime to save his ass and he was still dismissive and acting like a complete asshat, UGH] but there are still moments of epic fail on his part. Grr.
The issue I have with a lot of so-called heroes is their overwhelming obsession with morality. Things they need to face up to:
It's a war, you're gonna get your hands dirty, so get over it.
It may not be noble to knife the villain in the back, but it'll save lives.
People are going to die and it will be tragic and hard to cope with, but for the sake of everyone else, loved one and strangers, you gotta keep going and STOP WHINING, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.
Your life IS more important because you're the only one that can defeat the baddie, so stop acting humble and self-deprecating and risking your life for complete randoms when you have a bloody QUEST to embark on. *head!splodes*
I know we're supposed to cheer at Richard's big heart and kindness, but when he acts like every single injustice they encounter along the way MUST be rectified IMMEDIATELY...argh. Save the world first, deal with the minor issues later, FFS.
I wanna see HER lead. She's so much better at it...really! And Cara is her awesome-tastic snarky sidekick!!! haha.
WORD. These two carry the show for me, Richard is largely irrelevant.
I admit, the time I most admired him was when he trusted Cara and worked on getting Kahlan to at least accept her as an ally, because there was a bit of equality- Kahlan's refusing a tactical advantage based on feelings and Richard works out the situation and acts mature and it is good, but then we snap back to Kahlan being the smartest and most sensible one around and Richard being a whiny dumbass. I liked LEO more than him, which says something, considering how much I hated the idea of him!
In Perdition, in Richard's hallucination, when he refused to hear out Kahlan's husband and went and unlocked the door for baneling!Cara, even with everyone else shrieking at him not to do it...*clubs him over the head* GOD. He'd jeopardize all these lives for one person and think himself justified to make that call, it makes me SICK. And I can't even say he was out of his mind, because he was acting in his hallucination the way he would in RL, it's not like his thinking was being affected, just his perception of reality.
So agree with that last paragraph. I want the new outfit with the old hairdo! And the make-up amuses me, you can really see the eyeshadow standing out so much, it's unnecessary! For one thing, it's distracting wondering where she got her make-up kit from and for another, she's gorgeous as it is, just leave her face alone!

Date: 2010-02-23 03:14 am (UTC)He doesn't make me as capslocky as he did in the first season [I wanted to throttle that ungrateful jerk- Kahlan kept trying to help him and he kept disregarding her advice and running headlong into danger and making her work overtime to save his ass
Agreed. He's a little bit better this season, but still annoying in his
perfectways. "Bounty" pretty much sums up that whole issue. Richard doesn't listen to Kahlan, gets them both in trouble, Kahlan gets herself out of it, then goes to save his ass. But then at the end of the episode it's all "Richard was right!" Urgh.Kahlan's refusing a tactical advantage based on feelings
I see what you're saying there, but Kahlan's reasoning wasn't based on feelings (maybe a little!) but it was logic at the heart of it. Mord'Sith are evil. Case in point. It was much more likely that Cara would betray them in a second rather than have her help them. She didn't have the chance to see what Richard did in the future so therefore his decision was based more on emotion rather than logic than hers.
I liked LEO more than him, which says something, considering how much I hated the idea of him!
I hated Leo. He was boring, stupid, and completely irrelevant. He was plot filler in the most obvious of ways. I like Richard (especially with Kahlan *squee!*), but when he goes into that goodboyshtick where he doesn't want anyone to ever get hurt - he really bugs the ever living shit out of me. Enough already. We get it. He's the good guy!
He'd jeopardize all these lives for one person and think himself justified to make that call
I actually thought it was great that they showed a negative consequence to Richard's actions for once. That the ever constant goodboy morality finally didn't turn out okay in the end. And it was also great to show that it's one of Richard's biggest fears, that for all his rushing headfirst into things, it's gonna backfire one day and he'll destroy everyone.
Bridget Regan is gorgeous no matter what, but I'm actually kind of nostalgic now when I watch season 1. I miss the more natural look, the curls, the white dress... *whine* It's not that she's not hot now, it's just...GAH! >IZCONFLICTED<

Date: 2010-02-23 03:41 am (UTC):P I don't know why I'm sorted into Slytherin in every quiz when my ploys are always lacking in subtlety.
But I was ashamed to realize I only have the one C/K icon and when I saw your journal...*bounces* Couldn't resist!
Richard doesn't listen to Kahlan, gets them both in trouble, Kahlan gets herself out of it, then goes to save his ass. But then at the end of the episode it's all "Richard was right!" Urgh.
I LOVE YOU. That perfectly sums up all the issues I have with Richard. He's the one named in the title, so he gets all the glory and Kahlan gets little credit for having to act like his frakking BABYSITTER because his judgment is made of fail. She's more of a hero than he is, yet the show always skews it so that he comes up smelling like roses and I DON'T BUY IT. I wouldn't be so pissed if they didn't make it seem like he's the most wonderful, intelligent, awesome character ever and admitted his flaws, rather than denying and whitewashing everything.
I don't know if you watch Sanctuary, but if he was more of a Will to Kahlan's Magnus, it'd be more endearing seeing him take on her advice and letting her wisdom guide him rather than letting his hot head and bleeding heart do the leading. The writers seem to think it'd emasculate him, though, so we get him perpetually leaping out of the frying pan into the fire and long-suffering Kahlan needing to clean up after him. *huggles her*
it was logic at the heart of it. Mord'Sith are evil. Case in point. It was much more likely that Cara would betray them in a second rather than have her help them.
I see what you're saying there, but Kahlan came off like her prejudices were getting the better of her. 'Mord'Sith are ALWAYS evil, there is no possibility they might change'. Even though Cara's bloodied up and obviously not happy with her 'sisters', she still doubts Cara would help them take out the other Mord'Sith.
I just hated that she knew Cara helped Richard SAVE THE WORLD and yet she was all 'it doesn't matter what she did, she probably had evil ulterior motives', not so much as a 'you did good', grr. I thought that was willful blindess on her part, rather than a reasoned, logical response. I don't blame her for wanting to kill Cara when she found out about Dennee, but at this point in time, she should've given her the benefit of the doubt, considering she'd already proved herself.
I hated Leo. He was boring, stupid, and completely irrelevant. He was plot filler in the most obvious of ways.
Lol! I hated the romance with Cara, it was soooo painful for me, but I liked that he made her laugh- even if it was OOC. It was just unrealistic that she'd let someone in emotionally as far as she did with him, and the writers cheated by having enormous time lapses so we could mentally fill-in-the-gaps. That's shoddy writing, either put in the effort to make it believable or don't start with it at all.
What I liked about Leo was how respectful he was, that boy was a good listener and knew his place, he deferred to the ladies, what a novelty! THAT is why I ended up liking him. He was adorkable. Too bad he didn't have Richard's SUPER SPESHUL POWERZ with wielding the Sword of Truth- what WAS that about? Did Richard's training or experience or something help him fend off T'Pol?

Date: 2010-02-23 03:41 am (UTC)*hugs you tight* WORD.
I can't get over how much I hate it when guys wibble about, 'Oh, it's all my fault they're dead' when it's bloody obvious it's the VILLAIN'S fault, ugh. *headdesk* I love that Kahlan doesn't beat herself up about Leo here. SHE IS SO AWESOME. And there's Cara with a legitimate source of angst, but does she whinge and get all irritating? No.
I actually thought it was great that they showed a negative consequence to Richard's actions for once. That the ever constant goodboy morality finally didn't turn out okay in the end.
HMM. Good point. But it was a dream, so it didn't have any RL consequences. And he's probably gonna chalk it up to 'oh, I was hallucinating, I don't need to learn any lessons from this'.
And it was also great to show that it's one of Richard's biggest fears, that for all his rushing headfirst into things, it's gonna backfire one day and he'll destroy everyone.
OOH. 'k, there you got me, I didn't even consider that! If we only had an inkling of self-awareness, that he knew his impulsive nature was a problem, I'd be happier, but I don't know if he learned anything in the end or not.
I miss the more natural look, the curls, the white dress... *whine* It's not that she's not hot now, it's just...GAH! >IZCONFLICTED<
*squishes you* I like the Xena outfit but I do miss the flowing white dress...I guess the writers wanted to make her wardrobe more fighting-effective? Lol. But if she's gonna have long hair and make-up and Cara's wearing high heels, there's really no call for making it 'realistic', pfft. I like her new look but it's very MADE UP and artificial, which would be fine if not for the setting they're in.
PS. Sorry for the massive reply, I just can't edit myself, I have no internal filters, lol.

Date: 2010-02-23 03:58 am (UTC)That's the point. Kahlan's not perfect. Which is one reason of fiftygazillion as to why she's so awesome. Kahlan knows Mord'Sith are evil, whether it's prejudice or common sense, she did not experience what Richard did with Cara, and so she (understandably) didn't trust her in the least. She doubted Richard's faith because look where that's gotten them before! Just because Cara lent a helping hand, it didn't mean that she didn't have a darker/evil motive for it... I wouldn't have trusted Cara either if I were Kahlan! She was erring on the side of caution which is the balance for Richard's GANGWAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!
That's shoddy writing, either put in the effort to make it believable or don't start with it at all.
The writing for "Dark" was just atrocious and Leo needed to never have happened. I can't even go into how annoyed I was with the whole thing. I made a post about the OOC'ness in my journal if you're interested in THAT rant...
If we only had an inkling of self-awareness, that he knew his impulsive nature was a problem,
*shrug* We'll find out...? hahha
guess the writers wanted to make her wardrobe more fighting-effective? Lol.
From what I've heard, it was really Bridget's pushing that enabled the change. She really wanted Kahlan to have a more badass, fighting friendly outfit.
Cara's wearing high heels.
Crazy ass Mord'Sith...
like her new look but it's very MADE UP and artificial, which would be fine if not for the setting they're in.
Agreed. It's a hot look, but really out of place. Save the made up look for special occasions! There needs to be more variation. It shouldn't have to be one or the other.
Sorry for the massive reply, I just can't edit myself, I have no internal filters, lol.
TOTALLY OKAY BY ME!!! :D

Date: 2010-02-24 02:32 am (UTC)Okay, just as long as you got that it might've been a bit of prejudice there. And I agree, she isn't perfect and I think that's great. [Even if some hardcore obsessive fans get uber-protective of their faves and refuse to hear any ill of them, even when it has some basis in fact and rant and rave when anyone dares to bring it up. *eyeroll*]
Kahlan is awesome in an infinite number of ways, so her short-sightedness here doesn't undermine that in the least! I liked that she was being human, I totally understood how she felt and why she'd react like that. And it made me giggle that she and Cara were pitted against each other, like in the next ep where Cara was all 'The Mother Confessor told me to be more compassionate'/'Are you saying this was my fault?'/'Yes'. HA. I nearly died laughing.
I made a post about the OOC'ness in my journal if you're interested in THAT rant...
OMG! I found it and it's very illuminating. I think- um, have you heard of cognitive dissonance? I should've hated that ep, in fact, I hate many things about it but I made myself believe I liked it and now you've ripped the veil from my eyes. *sighs* I'mma comment on that later when I've had time to process this paradigm shift.
From what I've heard, it was really Bridget's pushing that enabled the change. She really wanted Kahlan to have a more badass, fighting friendly outfit.
Really? Okay, I'll get behind the new outfit, then. Lol, I am easily won over! The make-up, though, still not a fan, not even if I hear Bridget applies it herself because she feels Kahlan needs to be less natural and more like a woman of the modern age.
TOTALLY OKAY BY ME!!! :D
