1. Dana Scully, The X-files
Lookit how young she is! *coos*
'Please explain to me the scientific nature of the whammy.'
The very first time I saw her, she was being hardcore, tossing a glass of water into Doggett’s face. *muffles giggles* How could I not like this woman? She was tough, determined, almost intimidating in her intelligence and fierce in her protection of those she loved… heck, I was totally shipping her and Mulder before I ever even SAW Mulder, just based on her strength of will in her vow to find him and her angst of being without him and how she was so strong and dedicated and so so gorgeous in her utter desolation.
This was the pared-down version of Scully, the one that existed solely for Mulder and validating his quest [of course, later on, it expanded to caring for their child]. She was so closed off, so wounded and brittle and teetering near the edge…god, that primal scream she let loose scared the hell out of me. Usually, overacted cheesy shrieks of despair get mocked mercilessly but...not with Scully's tangible pain. She fascinated me, drew me into the series, but it wasn’t love just yet.
Then I saw the movie, and it was almost painful to see how young and innocent and carefree she was back in those days, before the world had its way with her and took so much of her simple faith and joy. Her calm self-assurance and professionalism, easy rapport with Mulder, her sense of humor and dry wit, that fearsome intelligence, the staunch loyalty and utter commitment to their partnership against all odds…thoroughly won me over. I was hooked after that.
2. Vala Mal Doran, Stargate SG-1
'I'm gonna go crazy. And I'm taking you with me.'
Humor is usually the province of the males of the show while the women are there to be the straight guys and nod appreciatively, but she was more like the female version of O’Neill, supplying the wit and sarcasm filtered through her own delightful twisted view of the universe and complicated life experience. *sighs* She deserved another six seasons, damn it. I was never really clear on what her role on the team was supposed to be, but she is the type of character that isn’t so easily pinned down and explained, she just IS and you can’t duplicate her, you can’t reproduce her in another show like the typical scientist or typical soldier or whatever, she’s this irresistible force of nature and it is so much fun to be swept along with her.
She’s not just there for comic relief either, there are so many episodes that show her integrity and dedication, I mean, the whole sacrificing herself to stop the Ori invasion…was just stupid on the writers’ part because it relied on Daniel being a jerk and not listening to her and forcing her to go off and be a hero all on her lonesome…but in character terms, goddamn…The whole thing with Adria too- if she really were shallow and vain and concerned with wealth, she’d’ve switched sides and been rewarded with all the riches she could possibly desire from her super-powerful daughter. But instead, she always fought for the lives of her friends, she always did her best to undermine Adria’s plans of galactic domination and I love that she was so practical without any misguided mushiness towards this devil child, no Gabrielle-style conflict or hostility or misplaced heroics.
3. Donna Moss, The West Wing
Usually there is a theme of women in positions of power and dominance amongst my favorites. The list includes an FBI agent with like, ten different degrees and specialties, the leader of an intergalactic expedition, a starship captain, the President of the Twelve Colonies, a warrior princess…and so on.
Donna is the one and only character who I love and adore who is in what may be called a menial position. And far from hindering her, it actually serves to make her character all the more fun- yes, she’s just a secretary [or more technically, the Deputy Deputy Chief of Staff], but her brisk, witty and hilarious conversations with Josh Lyman, Deputy Chief of Staff in the West Wing, are the highlights of the show. There is nobody more consistently amusing than Donna when she’s bantering with or riling up Josh. And she may be his employee, but she has him WHIPPED.
Take this short but oh-so-revealing snippet:
DONNA: You have a staff meeting.
JOSH: That’s...where I’m going.
DONNA: I’m just telling you.
JOSH: Yes, but you see that that’s obviously where I’m going, yet you tell
me anyway.
DONNA: And you don’t find that adorable?
JOSH: That you seek to control me?
DONNA: Yeah.
JOSH: Love it.
DONNA: Donald hasn’t called me yet.
JOSH: Right. Can we clear up a few things about my level of interest in the
revolving door of local gomers that you see, in the free time that you create by
not working very hard at your job?
[Donna doesn't give him a stack of papers he needs]
DONNA: Excuse me?
JOSH: You work hard at your job.
DONNA: How hard?
JOSH: Very hard.
DONNA: And I am?
JOSH: Not at all controlling.
DONNA: Thank you. You have a staff meeting.
JOSH: On my way.
She is occasionally neurotic and controlling, yes, but it only makes me like her more because HELLO, mass of human insecurities and neuroses talking here. I empathize with her all the more. I love that Donna is so devoted to Josh, her affection for him is so clear, but she’s anything but a pushover- she mocks him amusingly, she’s playful and verbose, messes with his mind, withholds information as a form of punishment or to bring him to heel and yet when he needs her to support him for real on something bad that’s gone down, she’ll be sympathetic and kind and maybe occasionally bring him coffee. Awww!
4. Jessica Devlin, Shark
I’m a sucker for female bosses and their endless drama in coping with difficult migraine-inducing yet roguishly charming male colleagues. [House/Cuddy, anyone?]
In season one, Jess was Stark’s boss and reluctantly put up with his escapades and saw to damage control as he ran amuck doing whatever dirty deeds it took to win his case. The fun was in his creative ways of circumventing her in pursuit of a win through fair means or foul- most often the latter- and seeing her find out and chew him out before aiding and abetting anyway in the interests of seeing justice served. Heh. Their relationship went from the aloof animosity of two people with nothing in common, who’d worked against each other throughout their career, to being friendly co-workers with a fun line in witty banter and sexual innuendo. She never could quite keep him on the straight and narrow, but she recognized that no matter how dubious his methods were, he achieved the right outcome for the innocent parties and she worked to assist him in that endeavor- leading her to join the team in the second season in a more central role, which really made me super happy and excited. Mommy and daddy! I love these ships, lol.
Stark kinda corrupted her as the series went on, and we got to see her play hardball with the criminal element and nail their ass, even breaking her own rules in the process by helping him or personally coming up with schemes that a season ago, she would’ve objected to, lol. Jess got to be super hot and take down the bad guys and be a tremendous force for justice. And did I mention their witty banter? Jess was Stark’s equal, and always maintained an authority and dignity and awesomeness befitting her position. Love love LOVE.
5. D’anna Biers, Battlestar: Galactica
'There's something beautiful, miraculous, between life and death.'
Ok, I was struggling a little with my fifth candidate. I admit, I’m not in love with her the way I am with the others on my list, but I do find Three to be very amusing. The Joker in the pack, so to speak. Her fake-out on Roslin in The Hub killed me dead with laughing, heh. Takes balls to do that to someone who could have you airlocked in a heartbeat without a second’s worth of doubt. :D She's a full-on psycho but in a hilarious hell-raising way, and okay, so Three has few redeeming features but she's a fun vivacious character to watch mindfrak everyone around her.
