Day 8 of happy meme

Been so tardy with this one, but hey, at least I put a lot of effort in, right?
Last but definitely not least, the wonderful Marguerite Krux.

Now, between virtuous honorable jungle girl and duplicitous scheming black widow with a checkered past, who do you think I should fangirl? LOL.

Marguerite won me over with her flexible morality, sharp barbs and witty quips, and her deeply deeply buried soft compassionate side. Not that I don't like Veronica, but the whole black-and-white integrity and honor deal gets tiresome after a while. Marguerite brought the final tally to four 'intrinsically good' characters and four 'morally ambiguous' characters. Nice bit of harmony there.
So, at the first sight of our resident heiress, she is being a badass, lol. [I keep hearing about this deleted scene where she SHOOTS AT ROXTON, OMG, and if that's true, I'm going to cry because I'd've loved to see that.] Still, seeing her all cool and dangerous and RAWRRR, taking out this guy that stalks and attacks her on the street is pretty damn awesome. You do not want to be on the other side of her gun, lol.
Apart from being kickass, the main reason I love her is because she's so tart and funny and scathing when she takes the others down a peg or two, and just endlessly entertaining. The show has a tendency to overdo the corniness, but her remarks make it all worthwhile. Her intonations and mannerisms crack me up. I convulse in laughter and rewind scenes so many times just to hear her speak, lol. OBSESSED, MUCH?

In the pilot, she's very cold and uncaring and would throw any of the others to the wolves to save her own neck. So it makes sense that Marguerite gets a bit of a bad rap from the other characters. All right, it's not like she didn't set herself up for it with some of her choices, but the thing is, since then, she's proved herself time and again by risking her neck for them when she needn't have. A bit of gratitude would be nice but they mostly disparage her efforts by implying that it was in her own best interests and she probably had ulterior motives for helping out. UM, WTF, EXCUSE ME, BUT NO, SOMEONE SAVES YOUR MISERABLE HIDE, SHOW SOME RESPECT. GOD.

A few times she tries to offer someone a bit of comfort or understanding and she gets rebuffed because she is so evil and dark and scheming that she can't possibly understand how it feels [VERONICA]. She doesn't really get offended or try to defend herself, I guess because she figures that with all the misdeeds of her past, quibbling over something now would just be hypocritical and petty. I like how self-aware she is. The others like to delude themselves as to the nobility of their cause, but really, all their ends are as self-serving as hers; it is completely natural and human to want to advance your cause and better your life, but they act like she's the only selfish one there, which is lame.

Um, in case it hasn't gotten through yet, Marguerite's no angel. But one of the interesting things about her is that she doesn't want to be seen as anything remotely resembling an angel. She has the potential to be a good character but she has no interest in proving herself. Life's screwed her over, so why not look out for herself and leave the others to debate the morality of it all. As she says, 'What good is honor if you're too dead to enjoy it?'

When she does let her guard down and show that she cares, when she does throw aside self-preservation and risk her life for something/someone other than herself, she doesn't need appreciation or really want it. I guess she'd rather damn her reputation and thus not have any expectations to meet, thereby simplifying life a great deal. And the others, bar Roxton most of the time, buy into this act. But it is mostly an act, because if she had no redeeming qualities at all, I wouldn't adore her as much.

She's got a lot of secrets and even when we get a crumb or two here and there, I've got to say it doesn't really make any sense to me but I've never been great with keeping the mythology of a show straight. I watch for the characters and interactions between them, and she's just so awesome in action.

Her bickering with Roxton is one of my favorite things ever, seeing them banter back and forth, flirting with their true feelings for one another, wondering how far she'll push him away or let him in. Marguerite's got these walls built all around her and Roxton's so determined to get through to her, and it's wonderful watching her struggle with her attraction and affection for him, and her need to protect herself from being
hurt.

I've always found it interesting that she doesn't use him, do the whole seduce-and-control ploy that she utilizes throughout the series when in a tight spot. She teases and taunts him endlessly, but she doesn't try and establish a relationship which she could use to get the upper hand with him. How many times has she done this in the past to get her way? Yet she keeps him at a distance, because I think she recognizes that with him, she wouldn't be able to keep it from becoming personal.

But of course, they slowly, deliciously, get closer throughout the series. *wriggles*

Have I mentioned my 'women-with-guns' kink? Because that's another reason I'm so in love. :D

RL thing of squee.
Some random guy just said, 'You've got some nice pins, those Stargate ones,' and pointed at the badges I have pinned to my bag. I just grinned and said thanks. Mwahaha. *feels proud*
And to think I would've brought my other bag today because I almost couldn't be bothered transferring things back and forth from one to the other. I feel gleeful. :D
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE HEALING POWER OF GEEKING OUT WITH ANOTHER PERSON.
Also, I printed out a bunch of stuff for this other dude whose card wasn't working, and although it only cost like, 50c at the most, he gave me $2. Hmm. I know, I know, should've been polite and all, 'No, no, it's not necessary,' but goddamnit, that's not how I operate. My working theory is 'don't be generous and offer something unless you're willing to give it up'. None of this 'polite refusal' crap, kthxbai. If that makes me mercenary, well... *shrugs* I can't say no. I WON'T. :P

Date: 2009-01-14 02:19 am (UTC)Oh on the Veronica front? I really can't stand her. Her goody-to-shoes attitude just turns me off so much I can't even describe it. Imean, live a little FCOL!
Aha, here it is!

Date: 2009-01-14 11:39 pm (UTC)It's funny, though, when I was snarking about Veronica, I toned it down in case I offended Veronica lovers, and yet you both are like, rabidly GRRR! OMG! HATE! and I ended up being the moderate one, lol!
Malone goes missing and everyone has to wear black and weep constantly until his return, no one is allowed to smile or even speak if it's not a clue about where he is
Yep, that pissed me off. Especially as Marguerite's trying to comfort her and Veronica just turns on her with so much spite and contempt.
Veronica's constant comments regarding Marguerite's loyalty, were just too much!
You'd think she'd be a little more open-minded, considering how many times Marguerite's saved her ass...okay, her METHODS are...different, but the end result's the same, you're alive, that's all that matters, right? But everything's gotta be 100% sanctioned by Veronica's moral code otherwise it's wrong and wicked and shows what a bad person Marguerite is.
It's all the more infuriating because in this instance, Marguerite was trying to protect them and she never got acknowledged for that.
Torri! OMGLUFF! Ha, the only time I watch shows I formerly used to love is for Torri...

Date: 2009-01-14 04:01 am (UTC)'Lovely collection of dead things you have here'. Ha. She certainly didn't waste time trying to win any personality contests!
'I promise I'll leave my dresses at home'. AFTER WHAT SHE DID, AHAHA. :D Lol, didn't she worry he'd come at her throat?!
Dude, original movie? Different to the pilot? Or basically the pilot with a few changes?
Btw, I don't expect you to have answers to everything but just checking- I was looking up something and came across the UK edition of TLW, which supposedly has bloopers for seasons 1 and 2. Is this for real?! Because I absolutely adore the season 3 ones you linked me to, and watch them periodically and giggle like mad each and every time.
Though I can't figure out that one scene where Marguerite's eating something while Challenger and Ned talk about the witches, where Rachel keeps cracking up and asking them to cut and someone's all, 'Don't cut, MAKE HER SUFFER', lol. *g* Do you know what that was all about?
(no subject)
Date: 2009-01-14 04:28 am (UTC)Hmm, I haven't heard anything about those bloopers but I'll see what I can find out. I'd like to see them if they exist! Oh and you should totally write and ask for Rachel's autograph because it's freaking awesome!
I have no idea what made her keep cracking up but I laugh along with her because it's so damn funny :P I think it was Will who was saying "Make her suffer" though. Evil bastard that he is! 8g*

Date: 2009-01-14 11:25 pm (UTC)Chili sauce, ew! >:O That's so mean! And she kept eating them? Must've been mild...or maybe I'm just a wimp, lol, not a chili fan...

Date: 2009-01-14 11:21 pm (UTC)AHAHA. I don't care if it wasn't in the final cut, it's canon to me. And I think I'll use that as my bait when trying to hook someone onto the show. 'So, my ship? Their love is epic. The first time they chat, the chick shoots the dude right near his crotch. DOESN'T THAT MAKE YOU WANT TO WATCH IT? HUH?'
I haven't heard anything about those bloopers but I'll see what I can find out.
Maybe it's just the same bloopers that they've put on the different sets? Thought that doesn't really make sense...anyway, this was the site I read it on:
http://www.phase9.tv/dvdvideo/lost_world_season-1.shtml
Oh and you should totally write and ask for Rachel's autograph because it's freaking awesome!
Have you done it? Did you get something back?! :O I'd feel so odd, though, like, what do you say?!
I think it was Will who was saying "Make her suffer" though. Evil bastard that he is! 8g*
Hee, I thought it was him! And then she pelts him with those awful berries! *squishes them both for complete and utter cuteness*
I watched that convention footage you linked me to, totally worth it, although Rachel wasn't there. *pouts* She and Will have the funniest interactions on the bloopers!
(no subject)
Date: 2009-01-14 11:30 pm (UTC)I haven't watched the convention all the way through.
"Where's Will going?" *giggles* I love them so much!
(no subject)
Date: 2009-01-15 12:43 am (UTC)Ha, you're the one that linked me to the con and YOU haven't watched the whole thing?! :D
It was all right, and the dude playing Malone was funnier than I thought he'd be. The Bond thing was amusing! Jennifer was very earnest, very 'correct'. The Stargate people I've seen were actually quite rebellious and not afraid to criticize things and their sense of humor was pretty outrageous, but she seemed very careful with her answers. *shrugs* I wonder if the women tend to be like that or just Jennifer?
Ohh, there was so much to love there, 'Oh, ****, I shot myself! God, that HURT!' Hee! And I think Death was comforting him? Trippy! :D
Oh, you know that bit where Rachel runs up the stairs and then something was off so they had to redo it? Do you know what she says? Her expression kills me as it is, but I can't decipher her words...
Speaking of expressions, that bit in the cave where she whacks Will and then gets in trouble, ha, her pout is ADORABLE. :D

Date: 2009-01-14 02:25 am (UTC)Oh and that scene about Marguerite shooting at Roxton. IT'S ALL TRUE!!! She shoots a whole in a drawer, right between his legs whilst he's sitting on a desk. IT'S AWESOME!!
(no subject)
Date: 2009-01-14 10:34 pm (UTC)Hee, now I know what everyone's talking about because I finally saw that scene! And it's SO FRAKKING COOL! Roxton went up a notch in my estimation. He doesn't even FLINCH, I mean, like, there's a crazy woman aiming a gun at him and he doesn't bat an eyelash, wtf?! Their destined romance could've ended before it ever began if he'd tried to scramble out of her way, lol.

Date: 2009-01-15 01:33 am (UTC)See, with this show, they had the good luck of knowing - ahead of time - that Rachel and Will had amazing chemistry (ie. "Tales of the South Seas"). Hence why they were able to go so full-on with the intended romance, because they already knew that it was going to be intense. I love that. I love that it was all pre-planned, that Marguerite and Roxton were always going to end up together. It made getting there all the more fun!
Oh and their argument in "Trapped" is seriously, the best scene in the ENTIRE series, because it's so raw. It doesn't hold back, it's intense and...I think i might just go watch it, lol.

Date: 2009-01-16 02:10 am (UTC)If you ever get around to that, I'll read it! :P I can't get enough of Marguerite appreciation.

I love the whole setup, the way it all worked out. I haven't seen TOTSS, but I find it so cool that it was like a rehearsal for TLW.
I love that it was all pre-planned, that Marguerite and Roxton were always going to end up together. It made getting there all the more fun!
Totally. I'm not a fan of ships where it gets derailed because the writers don't want to give in to the shippers or they want to keep them hanging on and waiting for resolution so one or both of the characters get involved in other relationships and get engaged or whatever. At that point, it's kinda desperate and turns me off. I love M/R because it was always clear they would be together and I didn't have to worry about them forming attachments to someone else and breaking my heart.
