I am so lucky that we're in little danger of earthquakes and such here [although my parents refused to buy a property in Torquay because they were concerned about being close to the sea- never know when the tectonic plates might decide to rebel on us and usher in an unexpected disaster]. It was so nerve-wracking turning up at Ma's and hearing about the tragedy that had befallen Samoa. With such a small population, it was inevitable that someone our family knew would be affected- and we found out that Ma's cousin died that day.
We were glued to CNN and other news networks the whole afternoon, and actually saw her nephew talking about how they were rushing to evacuate after the earthquake, with all these people crammed into the truck and others on the back, but the tsunami was too swift and ended up sweeping his mother and their housegirl off the back and carrying them away. That's just- that's literally one of my nightmares, I had recurring nightmares about being sucked into the sea when I was a kid, and hearing him describe the horror...*shudders*
I was totally freaked out on a personal level- which sounds horrible, considering all the people affected- because my cousin Lisa just came back from Samoa after doing some work experience with her father. The only loved one I've lost was Pa, and that was after a long battle with cancer, so his end wasn't unexpected, and thinking that Lisa could've been- ugh. I had a frantic moment of 'OMG, is Lisa back?!' and then a sigh of relief when I remembered she was. [Haven't seen her since she returned what with exam prep happening, gah]
So, the phone lines were down, I think, which meant there were some intense text-messaging sessions going on between here and there- in addition to my aunt's ex-husband and his family, there was also my uncle's ex-wife and their daughter to check up on. [Yeah out of four children, two are divorced and two are married, with a male-female sibling in each pair- very neat statistics, huh?]
Anyway, it turned out that the area they live in wasn't too badly affected- things got broken and such, but there wasn't too much damage, and Lee, my cousins' little half-brother, thought the whole thing was such an adventure, when they were evacuating the area. *eyeroll* Little boys, of course he'd find it exciting.
I don't want to be disrespectful or seem like I'm trivalizing the lives that were lost and others affected by what happened, but it was kind of funny when the news was showing images of Samoa, and Ma kept scoffing in the most disgusted tone imaginable, 'That's not Samoa, that's American Samoa!' The networks were American, I guess, so they weren't focusing on our Samoa, but the territory of the US, lol. The whole time, she kept going on and on about the images purporting to be of Samoa when it was American Samoan. It's the kind of distinction only natives would care about, lol, like Fiji-Indians and India-Indians.

I am so ashamed.
"Stephenie Meyer's vampire series has become Australian children's favorite book series, ending Harry Potter's two-year reign...[it] managed 15,400 votes compared with Meyer's 39,000."
My state recorded the second-highest total of votes with 22, 893 votes. *facepalm* I just- I cannot fathom what kids aged 5-17 are doing reading this! I mean, there are primary school kids wallowing in this- this abomination. *sputters* Learning how romantic it is to be stalked and emotionally abused...*head!splodes*
To cheer myself up from what would otherwise be a debilitating state of frustration, I quote you this:
Twilit
"Hey!" Hermione protested as Severus snatched her book away.
He flipped through it, his sneer growing progressively deeper.
"How can you read this? It's utter drivel. The writing is juvenile, the plot practically nonexistent, and this male lead..."
Hermione rolled her eyes. "Right. A pale, sulky, guilt-ridden guy with a sketchy past who spends his days surrounded by idiotic schoolchildren until he falls in love with a brown-eyed brunette who's way too young for him. Who could ever find that attractive?"
Severus snapped the book shut. "I do not sulk. Nor am I, if you haven't noticed, a vampire."

I'm gonna be so behind all you guys on the new eps, damn it. Once the exams are over, I'm having a massive d/l session- Criminal Minds, Castle, House and omg, Merlin's back! Why did nobody tell me?! But on second thought...while reading the summaries, I'm kinda turned off. Evil!Morgana, Arthur/Gwen...gag. Methinks I'm going to cut my losses now, rather than truck on in the hopes it'll be kind to me.
Mentalist season 2 opener.

So, The Mentalist has returned! My love for it is as strong as ever but omg, I must say that Jane is a bit of a jackass in this ep. Ma was definitely feeling rather disenchanted.
I don’t watch for plot, so it didn’t really bother me that it was about as deep as a puddle, lol, I just sat back and enjoyed Jane’s shenanigans. Not to say that I condone them, because he is such a wretch to keep playing his games. I am on Lisbon’s side, I do feel so frustrated on her behalf because she’s ultimately accountable for him and she’s had people questioning her judgment in relation to him and it’s not fair that he keeps putting her on the spot even when he KNOWS that she’s between a rock and a hard place.
And then he goes and intimates that the team will get nowhere without him. That his genius is entirely responsible for their success. The really sucky thing? He’s right. The way the writers have constructed the foundation of this show, the CBI cannot actually solve a case without his spookily accurate skills of observation. The deck is stacked in his favor, so there isn’t any way that the rest of the team can succeed on their own because the writers won’t let them. It’s bloody annoying, because Lisbon is so intelligent and the rest of the team is capable as well, but the premise of the show is founded on Jane being the one to lead them by the hand, keeping them in the dark the whole time.
Still, the only redeeming point of him being an ass is that- SQUEE- we get an apology hug! ZOMG! I waited all last season for the little moments like the trust fall and the ‘I want to feel your face when you smile’ moment and then in the very first ep this season, we get a hug!
That- kinda scares me, actually. It suggests that this is to lull us into complacency before they spring something really nasty and hideous on us. I’m getting suspicious now, wondering what they’ve got planned that they had to write in the hug to keep us happy. HMM.
But lol. The look on her face when he grabbed her. My mind immediately assumed he was doing it for nefarious reasons, like picking her pocket or something, and I waited the whole episode to find out what his motive was behind that hug, but apparently there wasn’t an ulterior motive! Color me stunned!
It’s interesting how open he is with her- he apologizes for the earlier insult, admits he was in the wrong. They’re a lot more emotionally available with each other now, it’s squeeful [and concerning, because I have a lingering predisposition to assume the worst of writers, even when they’ve treated me well].
And they’re a lot more physically comfortable as well. Lisbon may not have responded to his hug with sheer joy and delight, but she didn’t threaten him. *nodnod* She didn't groan or pull back, just let him hold her! That says something!
Later on, he grabbed her arm to check her watch- while this action made her huffy and got him scolded last season, she was totally okay with it here.
Btw. Did he REALLY call her ‘Grumpy’? Like, ‘Let’s get back to Sacramento, Grumpy’? For serious?! Do mine ears deceive me? Is this like their form of affectionate nickname, because it reminds me of the ep with her birthday, when she was all stand-offish with him ‘coz she thought he didn’t care about her birthday and he was calling her grumpy all day long.
Also. There wasn’t any hint of a previous romantic relationship with the new jerk, I wonder if they scrapped that storyline?
So, Criminal Minds season 5 opener.

Emily's new hairstyle! The JOY!

Notice the lack of season's 4's heavy fringe!
I didn't exactly hate it- hate is a strong word- but it took a long time for it to grow on me, and I only accepted it because it was Emily's, and I love her. I forgive Hotch his hideous tie choices, so I can forgive her the unfortunate hairstyling choice, y/y?

See how the side-swept 'do opens up her face so much!
Her expressions are way more accessible, we can actually see cute forehead wrinkles without a meter of hair in the way!

Profile shot, just 'coz. How lovely is she?!
I'm so in love with her nose now. It's funny, I was totally with the general notion that large noses are unattractive [with all the self-loathing associated with having one myself] and now, with Snape and Emily, I've swung the other way.
Which is not to say I believe myself to be the epitome of beauty, I'm not that self-deluded, but I'm not contemplating nose surgery anymore, so that's a plus. Anything that makes me more content with myself is a good thing. *huggles fandoms*

Women wielding guns= UBER HOT. My logic is undeniable. [Heh, I need to watch I, Robot again sometime]

Subtle signs of ship. *shipper!heart explodes with joy*

She bails on the case to sit by Hotch's bedside. Aww! A tad unprofessional...

...but I don't blame her.
Asshole!father was an asshole. What kind of moron wastes precious minutes ranting at an agent about how much time he's wasting when if he'd kept his mouth shut, the call would've taken only a moment?
And besides, Hotch needs some love. I've been saying it forever, thank you, writers, for finally paying attention!

Eye!sex...*wriggles*
Hotch's last chance at a normal family life is shattered.

Oh, look, Hayley and Emily get on. Too bad for fanon, which has them at each other's throats. You know, I liked Hayley prior to the whole shrieking shrew episode, which was so badly contrived just to get rid of her. I thought divorce was enough, but apparently TPTB disagree.

Witness Protection? New names, new jobs, new lives? Wow. Drastic.
I'm rather impressed with how well she took it. No screaming at him for ruining her life. Just a few dignified tears, understandable given the circumstances, and even some concern for Hotch.
"What about you, are you going to be safe?"
"He wants to see me suffer. Knowing that my son is out there and that I can't see him is better than killing me."

This is the worst thing the show could've done to him. Even what he went through with Foyet was nothing compared to this. Seriously, are they trying to send Hotch into a spiralling depression, culminating in a psychotic break and possibly a shoot-out at the BAU? They took him away from his wife and child, and now they're permanently removing them from his life. HARSH.
Damn show ships Hotch/Rossi. I hate you.

It's always Rossi that goes to straighten Hotch out and vice versa when one of them's foolishly and needlessly blaming themselves for someone's death. I've never seen so many self-flagellating, guilt-stricken perfectionists on one team before. I really don't like how the show constructs its interpersonal relationships- it's always Hotch/Rossi, Reid/Morgan...where's the love for the girls? Always the bromance, no time for chicks, ugh.
Also, their track record with ships stink. Reid/JJ was a go and then she ends up married with a kid. Then there was Morgan/Garcia, except the latter's now in a long-term relationship. *shakes head* It's like they deliberately set out to toy with shippers and then mess with the established dynamics.
The physically impossible gunshot wound.

So, the shooter's presumably aiming for the dude's heart, right? Or chest area in general.

HOW IN THE HELL DOES REID GET SHOT IN THE LEG?!
[Leaving aside the fact that this is HOTCH's ep and yet Reid still has to have his moment of woobie-ness. *eyeroll* I know, I know, MGG did his knee and they had to write it in, but it's so typical]
IS THE GUY FROM 'WANTED'? DID HE BEND GRAVITY TO HIS WILL? CURVE THE BULLET? WTF?!
Unless Reid flung his leg up in the air as he tackled the dude, there's just no way that wound ends up there. Come on. He'd have to be ballet dancing to get shot like that, okay? Not. Possible.
Shooter demonstrates his astounding lack of intelligence.

Only a person possessed of a colossal level of stupidity allows them to grab the gun! How hard is it to go, 'Don't move or I'll blow your head off'? FFS, control your targets, numbskull. You have the gun, the power's in your hands, what do you want to go letting them get a gun for?!

SEE, this is what monologue-ing gets you. An equal playing field. GOOD JOB.
I will quote the relevant parts from the Evil Overlord List.
* Shooting is not too good for my enemies.
* I will not gloat over my enemies' predicament before killing them.
* When I've captured my adversary and he says, "Look, before you kill me, will you at least tell me what this is all about?" I'll say, "No." and shoot him. No, on second thought I'll shoot him then say "No."
* Despite its proven stress-relieving effect, I will not indulge in maniacal laughter [alter this to 'idiotic monologues' for this situation]. When so occupied, it's too easy to miss unexpected developments that a more attentive individual could adjust to accordingly.
* I will be neither chivalrous nor sporting. If I have an unstoppable superweapon, I will use it as early and as often as possible instead of keeping it in reserve.
If this were real life, this would have a tragic ending.

Reid demonstrates the sissy way to shoot. Yeah, he's a hotshot, lol. I love him like he's my little brother and I rag on him accordingly because dude, EYES CLOSED, FOR SERIOUS?! He's lucky he didn't wing an innocent civilian! What are they teaching at the Bureau these days? *snickers*
-
I'm torn between d/l ep 2 of Castle or CM later. I'm hearing good things about Em/Hotch interaction, so...HMM. *ponders* Well, when I say 'good things', I mean people are whingeing about how much attention this pairing's getting and praying it doesn't go down the romantic route. So I'm betting it'll make me happy. *smirks*

Vidspam.
'k, I know almost everyone on my flist is familiar with Xena.
I know about 90% of you have absolutely no idea what The Lost World is, but um, for the few of you who do, guess what I spent my weekend polishing up? I was inspired by a Teyla version of the Xena opening credits, and decided to create...Marguerite: Warrior Princess. Just for laughs. ;P

Date: 2009-10-05 02:12 am (UTC)I am glad your family is going to be OK and I agree with you that people dont need major disasters and general unpleasantness to realize the goodness in their lives. But often people are so busy just trying to make it from Monday to Tuesday and from work to home to bed, we dont even take a breath to even have 5 or 10 enjoyable moments of squee. We dont dance or sing too loud or kiss someone we like or have dirty thoughts or eat donuts. I mean, we do but we dont do it often enough.
And I am not saying plague and pestilence are going to suddenly make us not have to pay Visa or take our kids to soccer practice but I think people should start focusing on the little miracles. At the same time people use disasters like this to totally stop being responsible or to justify having never been that way in the first place. I hope I'm making sense. I guess what I am saying is there are things that need to be done everyday......the annoying grown-up stuff or school stuff and then there are things we need to make sure we take time for like fic, friends, and fun. Maybe everyday it wont be possible but we just need to find time.
Sorry for the tangent : )

Date: 2009-10-06 12:58 am (UTC)I just- I can't believe we actually get subtext! For so long, it's been not even subtext, like, nonexistent-text, they gave us NOTHING to interpret and now I'm so thrilled that seems to be changing. Hopefully it's not just the first two eps but a continuing trend. *fingers crossed*
I was watching that ep with the escort UNSUB the other day, and it cracked me up when Hotch was like, 'Get ready to vamp'- did he seriously say that? I couldn't believe my ears. I wish we'd gotten a chance to hear Emily handle a client, lol.
No probs with the tangent. I kinda get what you mean.
I know people use the 'god doesn't give us more than we can handle' and 'things happen for a reason' to try and make sense of catastrophes, but I've never understood that. It seems like a desperate attempt at rationalization more than anything, but I won't begrudge people their coping mechanisms.
I just think we don't need disaster to fully enjoy the little things in life- if I get paralyzed tomorrow and can't ever walk again in my life, that won't make me enjoy small pleasures more or anything. I get these moments of exquisite joy when everything seems perfect [it's usually to do with LJ and fandom, lol] and I can't imagine that being heightened by dint of suffering some great tragedy, y'know?
That was my lengthy way of supporting the 'stop and smell the roses' philosophy in life, lol. ^_^

Date: 2009-10-05 02:25 am (UTC)There is this legend that says that the city I live in was built over a lake and one day there will be a huge earth quake and earth will swallow us all. i don't know why I'm telling you this but since we're on the subject of natural disasters.
must say that Jane is a bit of a jackass in this ep
Only a bit? I would have shot him, what a jerk. But I won't deny I love the back and forth with him and Lisbon, and I love that she left him there after his little "you can't live without me" speech.
I lol'd at the HP thing, but I hate HP and to me it's crap, probably worst than Twilight because with Twilight people acknowledge its badness, but there are people who hold HP as if it were some kind of high standard to be met, the book series to end all book series, eh, no.
(no subject)
Date: 2009-10-05 03:58 am (UTC)And dude! Freaky legend, I would not want to live on top of nature’s version of a Hellmouth. Yikes. Ticking time-bomb, much?
Although, hey, it brings to mind visuals of Atlantis sinking to the bottom of the sea. Maybe you people will become Ancients and start building flying cities and all, lol. :P
Only a bit? I would have shot him, what a jerk.
Maybe not shot, because it takes too much paperwork, but if I were Lisbon, I’d’ve taken him to the gym for ‘physical maintenance testing’ or some such thing and beat the crap out of him under the pretext that it’s ‘for your own good, the next time you need to defend yourself against someone you’ve pissed off’. I liked House, but I never approved of the way he blatantly disrespected and denigrated Cuddy, and I don’t want to see that kind of dynamic being replicated here.
I love that she left him there after his little "you can't live without me" speech.
Awesome moment! I love that she KICKED THE DOOR SHUT, lol, like, ‘This is how angry I am, RARRR, I’m imagining that’s your stupid head’. Heh.
Yay, someone else thought the HP bit was funny! I’ve giggled myself light-headed over it. My ship is so wrong, it’s right. *nodnod* It’s sad that Twilight beat HP, because at least JKR had some writing skills and grasp of character. I hated most of her characters and the awful clichés she reduced them to [wtf was with Hermione in Sixth Year? She gets a crush and suddenly she’s a brainless twit?] but they were more rounded than Twilight’s two-dimensional Mary Sue/Gary Stu paper cut-outs.
there are people who hold HP as if it were some kind of high standard to be met, the book series to end all book series, eh, no.
It’s rather like LOTR in that respect, in that everyone thinks it’s the golden standard by which all other series are measured. When I could barely get through the LOTR movies and would collapse of fatigue if I ever tried to read the books. I did The Hobbit and after I read the first chapter, it took me three months to psych myself up to pick it up and finish it. ‘twas an ordeal, I tell you.
I'm not saying LOTR is as crappy as HP- just that it's so highly rated [overrated] and nobody's allowed to say a thing against it or else the fans outrage you to death. *eyeroll*
(no subject)
Date: 2009-10-05 02:46 pm (UTC)It seems it has some roots in reality. We get little tremors all the time since we're situated on a tectonic belt, and geologists think the pressure is accumulating until one day there will be one big earth quake. Apparently the people who built this city weren't so smart and they used garbage as base filling and built the city over it. So one big shake and it's a goner. I love my city but as soon as I'm finished with uni I'm out of here.
I liked House, but I never approved of the way he blatantly disrespected and denigrated Cuddy, and I don’t want to see that kind of dynamic being replicated here.
I can't watch House because of that, the way he treats people, he's mean, Jane can be mean sometimes but he's more of a prankster, not mean spirited, and he apologizes and Lisbon would never allow him to go as far as House goes. And thank god, she left him standing there because when he threatened to leave I was begging for tptb to not let her cave. He was just bluffing anyway, and she saw right through him, smart girl.
I think what makes the Jane/Lisbon dynamics different is that she won't take any of his shit, if she lets him get away with some of his pranks it is because she find him entertaining, even if she won't admit it but come on look at her little smiles, he amuses her.
She calls him a pain in the butt, he calls her grumpy and feeds her strawberries, I love this ship so much, they're are adorable.
She gets a crush and suddenly she’s a brainless twit?
According to Rowling that's how girls get when they have a crush, their brain stops functioning because girls are stupid little things whose entire world begins revolving around a guy when they fall in lurve.
LoTR is BOOOOOORING, Tolkien is a lousy narrator, reading his battles is like reading a list "and then the armies arrived, and a guy got killed, and then another one got stabbed, and another one, and another one... and... another one... and it was over".
I read the Hobbit when I was a kid, I had a crush on Bilbo Baggins, lmao, I don't know why I had this image of him being this handsome brave young man and to me he was so dashing and daring, it didn't register that he was a hobbit or the hairy feet and the small stature, it just blew over my 8 year old head, I was in love.
(no subject)
Date: 2009-10-06 01:52 am (UTC)Though she seems to be amused by him, I don't think she'd let him get away with half the things he's done if she didn't find him entertaining, and she does, you just have to look at her little smiles to know she keeps him around because he is an endless source of amusement.
I love them, she calls him a pain in the ass, he calls her grumpy (which I found absolutely adorable), I love this ship so much, please show don't break my heart.
LoTR is boring, the way Tolkien narrates it's like he was making a shopping list. I find it rather ironic that when I was an HP fan and used to go to forums and stuff the main complain from HP fans would be that LoTR looked down on them and how snub they were. And now HP fans are the same, they act as if the HP books are the only ones worth reading.

Hee, shiny shiny icon- and to think I thought that was the most intimate they were going to get onscreen! Hopefully we'll get icons of the hug soon! *twirls*

Date: 2009-10-05 10:19 pm (UTC)If you download from torrent sites I've always found this one to be a pretty good site: http://eztv.it/. It's where I download all my shows from and they're usually pretty quick about getting stuff uploaded. Here's the Castle page: http://eztv.it/shows/42/castle/ & The Mentalist page: http://eztv.it/shows/179/mentalist-the/.
The links for last season's episodes used to work pretty well up until about mid-summer but a couple of months back something happened to their site and it was out of commission for a couple of weeks. They tried to re-upload everything but I think the links for the older episodes are pretty much dead. The links for this season's episodes should be working fine though. I've never used the greenish or pinkish colored download links so I don't know how well they work but I've always used the first download link listed (the blue arrow) and it's always worked great for me.

Date: 2009-10-05 03:28 am (UTC)Sorry to hear about your mum's cousin. It's just insanity over there right now.
Agree on Twilight. OMG. The horror. I'm not a Harry Potter fan, either. Too old for it, I guess, but from what I've heard, Twilight is badly written drivel!
(no subject)
Date: 2009-10-05 09:54 pm (UTC)Yeah, they had to have the service the same day because everything is chaotic and with businesses shut down and power outages and that, they can't exactly get funeral parlor people to hold onto the deceased. Not that anyone enjoys funerals but it's an important part of the grieving process, I think, and having to rush through that is a shame.
Lol, you haven't read Twilight but you know it's horrible? Very astute, you! I had the misfortune of receiving it as a re-gift and felt obliged to read the whole thing through. GAG. But for a truly hilarious read, try Cleolinda's recaps (http://cleoland.pbworks.com/Twilight#Bookdiscussionentries). A minimal exposure to the crapitude of the series with a healthy dose of teh funnies. It makes it all better! I actually thought I would die laughing.
And because I am irrepressible, I will quote one of my favorite parts [from Midnight Sun, the book from Edward's POV]:
---
Okay, so. We are approaching the part of the chapter that made me scream out loud, I am not even kidding you. Edward goes hunting to make sure he's sufficiently fed and less likely to suck the marrow from Bella's bones, and then he "realize[s] that [he's] going to go find the girl" like this is news to him and beyond his control, you know, because that free will thing is working out so well for him, so he climbs up to the upstairs window chez Swan and GASP! IT IS HERS, FAIR BELLA'S, WHAT SNORE FROM YONDER WINDOW BREAKS:
It was her room. I could see her in the one small bed, her covers on the floor and her sheets twisted around her legs. As I watched, she twitched restlessly and threw one arm over her head. She did not sleep soundly, at least not this night. Did she sense the danger near her?
I was repulsed by myself as I watched her toss again. How was I any better than some sick peeping tom? I wasn't any better. I was much, much worse.
BUT THEN:
"Okay, Mom," she muttered.
Bella talked in her sleep.
The hell he's letting an opportunity to penetrate her mind like this get away! AND THEN:
I tried the window, and it was not locked, though it stuck due to long disuse. I slid it slowly aside, cringing at each faint groan of the metal frame. I would have to find some oil for next time...
Next time? I shook my head, disgusted again.
BUT DOES THAT STOP HIM FROM CLIMBING INTO HER ROOM? NO IT DOES NOT, WHAT? WHAT? WHAT? Here's how trusting, how naive I was when I read Twilight: he's got super-amazing vampire sight and hearing and strength, right? So he could totally just hang from the window ledge or maybe sit up in a tree and watch through her window every night, right? He'd still be getting a pretty good show, right? It never even occurred to me that Edward would actually climb into her room, CLIMB INTO HER ROOM, OH MY GOD.
I wanted very much to go read the titles of her books and CDs, but I'd promised myself that I would keep my distance; instead, I went to sit in the old rocking chair in the far corner of the room.
And an actual shriek of "JESUS H. CHRIST!" rang through the Jones house, and I thought I would never stop screaming. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? DID SADAKO SCOOT OVER TO MAKE ROOM FOR YOU THERE IN THE CORNER? And then Bella starts murmuring his name in her sleep and his "dead, frozen heart" feels like it's going to beat again and it's like the SUN is rising in the middle of his "unending, unchanging MIDNIGHT," if you see what Meyer's doing thar. And I am still screaming.
And O, What a Change This Moment Hath Wrought in Him: "Always watching her, I began to plot." WAY TO DIAL THE CREEPY UP JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE THERE. (You know, I think this would actually be a fantastic book/series if it were openly, straight-up about a psychotic obsessed stalker vampire and the girl just kinky enough to get off on it. Like, if the actual tone and/or theme of the book was that the whole thing was sick, but it was sick in a way that totally worked for them and that's why they were perfect together, rather than Our Love, It Is So Epic and True.)

Date: 2009-10-05 04:40 am (UTC)The deck is stacked in his favor, so there isn’t any way that the rest of the team can succeed on their own because the writers won’t let them. It’s bloody annoying,
I think about it all the time when I'm watching the episodes. Sometimes I wonder how the hell Lisbon become a senior agent when she never understands who's the killer without Jane's help. It's more than annoying, it's hard to believe.

ITA. I know Jane makes freakishly accurate leaps in logic to advance the plot, but there's gotta be a point where the writers stop and go, 'Hang on, are we making the rest of the team look like damn fools?'
I'd like for Lisbon and co be able to figure out who the killer is and then Jane pulls his wacky stunts to entrap them rather than have the others totally OBLIVIOUS the whole time.
Also, the way he was treating Van Pelt was pretty condescending and downright rude. She's just too sweet to put up a fuss at him putting her down like that. I hope he tones down his inner jackass because it's going to get old, real fast.

Date: 2009-10-06 04:49 am (UTC)But for this show, it's Jane all the time and it's disrespecting the other characters, damn it.
I couldn't agree more.
I don't know, but I think it's even worst in this second season. Jane's always ten steps ahead of the team and he has been so rude... And Lisbon is a little strange. She's agreeing too easily with him. Maybe she's still feel guilty about all the Hardy fiasco, I guess.
My conclusion is: Jane so deserves Bosco in his life right now... >.>

Date: 2009-10-05 06:36 am (UTC)Re CM, so all in all did you like the first episode, or were you expecting more?
I'm so glad the writers are finally throwing us Hotch/Prentiss shippers a teensy little crumb. Well it's not that teensy, it's like half a cookie, but still. :) It makes me happy.
And Reid's gunshot wound, THAT'S WHAT I SAID!!! How? How? Did he... Is he... HOW???
And you should TOTALLY download CM. It's so much more awesome than Castle! Do it. Do it. Hotch & Prentiss will thank you. :) :) :)

Date: 2009-10-05 11:20 pm (UTC)Hmm, I should post a ?/10, probably, because I think I come off overly critical when I wouldn't bother with the review if I didn't care for it at all, y'know? I love the show so much that I'm entitled to snark at its flaws. *nodnod*
I did like the ep, overall. I was hanging out for the Em/Hotch scenes and even though he didn't like, cry on her shoulder and confide all his secrets to her. it was cool just seeing her be there for him. *glees* I've subsisted on less than CRUMBS for this ship, and so to have the two of them alone in a non-work environment thrills me so much, after being starved for so long, y'know?
Lol, I'm regretting deleting that 'Em/Hotch-cookies' icon of mine, it would've perfectly illustrated this conversation. *snickers* Whenever they have the slightest shippy scene happening, I'm gonna be like, 'OMG, COOKIE MOMENT, WOOHOO!' at the screen. :P
And Reid's gunshot wound, THAT'S WHAT I SAID!!! How? How? Did he... Is he... HOW???
*luffs you* EXACTLY.
Hee, everyone's being like 'CM is epic win'! I think it's 'coz every ep of Castle has the requisite Beckett/Castle UST, whereas CM rarely has anything for our ship. *sads*

Date: 2009-10-05 05:25 pm (UTC)how is it going with you?
I'm all squeeing for TM coming back .. *sigh* how I missed those two .. and what better thing to see is that they improved their writing style for the episodes.. I think they actually giving the cast a little more time and intelligent mind games too (Cho's and Rigsby's trick to Harlan's mother was a total joy to watch I was like "how proud Jane would be of those two bwahaha) but you know I'm still a bit bothered about NOT showing Lisbon's bright mind yet.. seriously! what made her that great agent, surely Minelli didn't just found her writing him a parking ticket and told her to come work for the CBI!
why do I get the impression that you didn't Sam Bosco? I liked the way he handled Jane .. remind of a bit of Lisbon in the pilot..
anyway, The Scarlet Letter was a really good episode.. action packed.. impatiently waiting for Red Badge and angsty Lisbon (ughhhh! 4 days left)

Date: 2009-10-08 02:06 am (UTC)Lisbon- ITA. She's a force to be reckoned with and yet all we've see so far is her- I hate to say 'inept' but....if the shoe fits- handling of Jane. I know she goes on about being able to manage him but evidence suggests otherwise and you have no idea how much it pains me to say that since I love her so much.
I don't like Bosco because of his supposed history with Lisbon. I really can't stand love triangles so having him around messing with my ship bugs the crap out of me and I wish he could leave so we could get back to the Jello awesomeness without this interloper in the midst. *glares*
RED BADGE! *bounces* ZOMG, cannot wait! Another hug, hypnosis, Lisbon going mental and freaking out...whoaaa!

Date: 2009-10-05 05:58 pm (UTC)Twilight? *shudders* Just no comment. DUMB series and, even if reluctant vampires weren't done to death, do they all have to be maladjusted pedophiles as well? Cute fic exerpt, though :)
I like the Mentalist, but you're right about the writers. I hate it when good shows fall into those traps *sighs* But the hug was sweet and the physicality seems like less of a deal between them now. I'm a sucker for relationships (and not just romantic ones) where two parties just randomly don't bother with physical boundaries
Grumpy *pets them* too adorable :)
Prentis is lovely. I never noticed her nose until you mentioned it but I like it :) Snub "button" noses have never done it for me. They look too much like you just ran face-first into a sliding glass door or something
And her and Hotch do make a cute couple :) I never understood the ex-wife hate. For one thing, even regular FBI Agents have a hard time keeping their marriages intact. In a high-stress field like profiling, it's even worse from what I've read. I haven't seen all the eps by a long-shot but I remember one where he'd been working a child abduction and he shows up at her door in the middle of the night and is all "Please, I just need five minutes." And she lets him come inside and take comfort in the fact that their son is okay like it's the most natural thing in the world for an ex to show up like that. That says "good people" to me. Divorced or not, taking that away from him is like ripping his heart out
I don't mind the bromance, but there should be more sismance, too. Or at least more clubbing and humiliating posers ;p
"He'd have to be ballet dancing to get shot like that, okay?"
Depends. It was a long-enough barrelled gun that an inexperienced shooter might not notice the fact that it's dipping in his hand a little (i haven't actually seen this ep yet so i don't know if the shooter is experienced or not but in your cap he's making no attempt to line up his Sight). This is why i prefer my handguns short-barrelled and with a built-in laser sight, lol. That way you know you're aiming for the chest :)
I honestly think monolouging is the villain equivlent of natural selection. The ones who tend toward that behavior are obviously unfit baddies so nature selects against them *nods*
*hugs you*

Date: 2009-10-06 12:23 am (UTC)Yeah, in relative terms, it could've been a lot worse for our family, so that's fortunate.
With my grandfather, he had cancer and we were with him for several hours before he died- it was one of the worst periods of my life, but there was closure there. The idea of losing people so suddenly in something so horrific is just awful, I can't imagine how the other families are coping.
DUMB series and, even if reluctant vampires weren't done to death, do they all have to be maladjusted pedophiles as well?
Ahaha! I remember you and your disgust for Angel and Buffy! 'Maladjusted pedophiles' indeed, heh. For me, it's not that so much as the blatant Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu pairing and I don't understand how anyone could overlook that! She's so plain and boring but the guys find her so beautiful and exotic and exciting and the girls all envy her and want to be her. *shudders*
It's like the biggest joke ever, the worst badfic to pass into popular culture and it's not fair. There are so many other more deserving authors toiling in obscurity and she gets all that fame and popularity. Ugh.
Cute fic exerpt, though :)
IKR?! It made me laugh so much when I first read that! ^_^ Still makes me laugh. In fact, the only redeeming factor for Twilight is how much fun I have reading other people mocking it. *nodnod*
But the hug was sweet and the physicality seems like less of a deal between them now. I'm a sucker for relationships (and not just romantic ones) where two parties just randomly don't bother with physical boundaries
Indeed. One of the wonderful things about TLW for me was M and R being so touchy-feely with each other. And now hopefully I'm going to get that on a regular basis here on Mentalist! Personal space? Pfft, what's that?!

Date: 2009-10-06 12:24 am (UTC)Well, yay me for enlightening you as to another facet of her beauty. *g* I think in terms of conventional beauty, Elle had her beat- it was truly horrible to read the backlash against Paget and all the people calling her ugly and rude names when she joined the show, ugh- but I really do believe that saying about 'beauty being in the eye of the beholder'. The more I love certain characters, the more appealing they are to my eye. Elizabeth on SGA is another example of a character not conventionally beautiful, but an utter goddess to those who love her.
And her and Hotch do make a cute couple :)
If the writers would ever start writing for them! Seriously, apart from him angsting over her in Minimal Loss and the cookie exchange the ep after, they've pretty much ignored these two's interactions and it's KILLED ME. Hopefully, shippers will get more fodder this season.
ITA with what you said about Hayley. Even when I shipped him elsewhere, I genuinely liked her for being able to make him laugh- the cute ep where he put on the pirate hat and spoke of how he joined the production to woo her. Aww! I'm usually uber-jealous and overprotective of my ships [um, killing off Seven in fics *coughs*] but she made him happy and then all of a sudden, they turn her into a vengeful harpy out of nowhere. 'k, then.
They did treat her in a positive light after that, though- she didn't deny him visits, and now and then, he'd make calls and she'd get Jack so that he could speak with his son after a difficult case, even when it was late. She wasn't the cliche bitter ex-wife, which was a nice touch. I wouldn't want her in every ep but it's a shame that they're ditching his family completely. Unless they have plans to make it an arc and resolve it later on?
Y'know, for a moment there, I thought they were going to pull a Red John/Patrick Jane thing on CM- have Foyet kill his ex and child. It's funny that for such a bubbly, fun show, they went to that dark place and in CM, a show about psychopaths committing horrific deeds, they didn't go there.
there should be more sismance, too. Or at least more clubbing and humiliating posers ;p
WORD. *high fives*
Oh, darlin'. I love all that technical talk. I have this gun fetish like you wouldn't believe, so the technobabble? Hot. :P
The guy was pretty lackadaisical in his murder attempts. I mean, he was almost- apathetic about it, really. Came off kinda like 'oh, I have a gun in my hands, I suppose I should maybe aim at him and pull the trigger, oh yes, that seems to be what the moment call for, all right then, here I go'. Hmm.
I honestly think monologueing is the villain equivalent of natural selection. The ones who tend toward that behavior are obviously unfit baddies so nature selects against them *nods*
*gigglefit* This is where I wipe away tears and tell you again how much I love your sense of humor. *glomps*

Date: 2009-10-06 02:49 am (UTC)My take on ships I really care about is that, if they're strong in the first place, the presence of an ex can only be a plus: "You have been weighed and measured and not found wanting." ... plus i've never bought into this idea that writers seem to have that people who don't work romantically can STILL be good friends. I do hope they close out this arc, though. Hotch deserves something resembling closure.
CM goes to some fairly dark places in its own way. A lot of shows also have a habit of lulling you into a false sense of security when it comes to dark plot twists so don't assume it's all over and everyone's safe yet
I'd claim not to have a gun fetish, but that contention would be belied by the fact that the smell of burnt gunpowder makes me feel loved. But most people who have never fired a gun assume it's easier than it is. At point-blank, you're usually good but more than 10 feet away and accuracy can start to suffer (especially if you aren't expecting it to jump the way a gun does as you pull the trigger). ... which is neither here nor there since televisions shows frequently sacrifice reaslism for drama ;p
*would help wipe away your tears but is too busy being glomped* Why, hello up there ;p

Date: 2009-10-05 06:11 pm (UTC)Also. There wasn’t any hint of a previous romantic relationship with the new jerk, I wonder if they scrapped that storyline?
I'm not sure exactly what they have in mind (maybe my prayers were answered and they actually read my discontentament with this crap), but it seems like it's going to be a light triangle. Bosco has feelings for Lisbon but she doesn't return them (according to the little article I read he's jealous of the attention Lisbon gives Jane and Jane's gonna be jealous of Bosco trying to get her attention or some other thing like that).

Date: 2009-10-05 11:10 pm (UTC)(maybe my prayers were answered and they actually read my discontentament with this crap)
Dude, you read my mind. That was my reaction exactly- 'oh wow, did common sense and good reason strike down that hideous plot cliche during the hiatus?!' They were being subtle and understated about it, which is excellent, if I can just shut my eyes and go 'lalala' and have it whoosh by overhead without my attention.
I loathe love triangles with a passion, but suggesting seedy, sordid love affairs with my favorite awesome characters is just WRONG. At least in this love triangle, she isn't actually into him. She ISN'T into him, right? *glares pointedly at writers* I don't mind it so much if it's just the boys acting retarded, but if she starts getting CONFLICTED and TORN BETWEEN THEM, I'm gonna hurl.
Weird, though, I didn't get lovey-dovey vibes off Bosco. He was too busy sniping at her lack of professional decorum and dissing her work ethic. What's he doing, compiling a list of ways NOT to get the girl? Sublimating his feelings of attraction by getting on her nerves? *snorts* Real mature.
(no subject)
Date: 2009-10-05 11:25 pm (UTC)UGH I KNOW I HATE IT TOO!!! Hate it so much. It's like a couple can't survive if there isn't a crappy cheap triangle in the middle. I hate it.
I liked how sublte and well basically non existant it was the thing between Jane and Lisbon. But I absolutely despise the ridiculous, moronic, cliche tutor/studant affair. SERIOUSLY CREATIVITY OK? Why does a character always have to have a relationship with a superior? Lisbon was just fine the way she was, no need to give her that retarded plotline.
Here's what RT said in the article:
"Bosco is kind of in love with Lisbon," Tunney says. "That brings up Patrick's feelings about me, which is like a little bit of a triangle, and it's fun. It's nice to be fought over, but it's very subtle. There's a lot of looks, and Patrick is a little jealous, just as Bosco is jealous of the attention that Patrick gets from Lisbon. The closeness that we have is infuriating to him."

Date: 2009-10-05 11:46 pm (UTC)This is where the writers' need for tension to up the ratings just screws with the plot. I think the show did outstandingly well in its first season, they had no reason to mess with the formula but they want to be daring and shake up the status quo and- NO, just NO, don't fix what ain't broke, my god, you dimwits!
This heightens the similarities between Mentalist and Castle, 'coz Beckett's ex turned up there in order to fan the flames of the attraction between her and Castle. *eyeroll* How do people in RL manage to have fulfilling relationships without a third party to prompt them into realizing their feelings, I'll never know.
It's nice to be fought over, but it's very subtle. There's a lot of looks...
Okay. Okay, that I can deal with, thanks for digging up that info, because it puts to rest some of the fears I had of random bed-hopping going on, ugh. I'm praying they don't end up cheapening Lisbon. Men never end up getting tarnished by such goings-on, but the women always do and it's just not something I'd enjoy seeing Lisbon get embroiled in.

Date: 2009-10-09 06:11 am (UTC)The Mentalist is my brain candy lately, between that and Bones, I'm guaranteed to be a happy camper. Though, the one thing that does nag at me is just what you mentioned, that sometimes the whole thing seems a little too Jane-centric, and while he's brilliant and all, so's the rest of the team. Lisbon did have a career before him, including the McTeer case, a major one that she -gasp!- solved all on her own. Tonight's episode though? Once they got through the angsty omg-did-she-kill-somebody part? It was brilliant. You'll see what I mean at the very end, like the last couple minutes or so, it's awesome. One thing though? Me no likey Bosco. Hmph.
I still have to catch up on CM *fails*
Finally... Marguerite, Warrior Princess.
OMG. Seriously, OMG. You win at life. ♥
Those are awesome clips, and I love that you included some season one stuff, because it's awesome and where the magic started, etc, etc. Also, because I haven't got it on DVD yet, and I'll take whatever I can get ^^.

Date: 2009-10-26 01:24 am (UTC)He was in the local newspaper- the article's now up on my grandmother's fridge, lol- and it's kinda funny because the adults were talking about a major mistake the paper had made and I was reading through it, 'Yeah, yeah, okay, hmm...'Mr Meredith was the Samoan ambassador'- hold up, WTF?!' *shakes head* They mistakenly wrote that my UNCLE was the ambassador, instead of my late grandfather. Idiots. Tsk, tsk.
ZOMG. Lisbon solved cases on her own? *gasp* But- but- impossible! How did she think for herself without his brilliance to guide her?!
And dude, with Red Badge, I totally called it- I knew she wasn't going to go nuts all of a sudden, I totally guessed that she was taking a leaf out of Jane's Book of Crazy Stunts to Facilitate Crime-Solving. *nodnod*
You know what would be really novel? If they solved a case completely legally WITHOUT messing around so badly it sends the lawyers into a tizzy. I kinda enjoy the fantastical aspect of the show wherein they can coerce confessions and such without their cases being thrown out of court [poor, poor lawyers, I don't envy them at all] but it'd be interesting to see how they'd fare sticking to the letter and spirit of the law!
Bwahaha! *takes a bow* Thanks, darlin'! I'm glad you appreciate the vid, I made it knowing only two other people would possibly get a kick out of it, and after all those hours I spent on it, too... Mmm, I love season 1. Okay, so s2's my favorite [Roxton's haircut gives it an edge], but it was all cute and adorable and wacky, without the underpinnings of angst from later on, especially s3.

Date: 2009-10-26 01:32 am (UTC)Renouncement
I must not think of thee; and, tired yet strong,
I shun the love that lurks in all delight-
The love of thee- and in the blue heaven's height,
and in the dearest passage of a song.
Oh, just beyond the sweetest thoughts that throng
this breast, the thought of thee waits hidden yet bright;
But it must never, never come in sight;
I must stop short of thee the whole day long.
But when sleep comes to close each difficult day,
When night gives pause to the long watch I keep,
And all my bonds I needs must loose apart,
Must doff my will as raiment laid away
With the first dream that comes with the first sleep
I run, I run, I am gather'd to thy heart...'
