Just randomly- icon love! *squishes [livejournal.com profile] odakota_rose *

---------

So, I was going to leap on the 'name your laptop' bandwagon.[livejournal.com profile] odakota_rose  has Moya,[livejournal.com profile] mcgarrygirl78 has Matilda,[livejournal.com profile] spence_reid  has...Agnes? But when the only appropriate name that comes to mind is Galactica- for my laptop is one with the crashing, and the falling apart and the malfunctions and inevitable crapping up- I think I might maybe postpone this. I have a feeling all the BSG people will come bash up on me since any jokes about Galactica witty or not are just too soon. Besides, my laptop induces enough angst without its very name making me all glum and depressed, right? I'll stick with 'frelling piece of dren' for now. :P

----------

Another TLW dream. I'm torn between amusement and concern at how much it's eating my brain. And in the grand tradition of my subconscious ripping off themes and events from other shows, considering how much I've been thinking about Boomer/Chief in the last week, it's perhaps not surprising that my dream dredged it up in terms of Marguerite and Roxton going through the whole 'I shall yell and rant and verbally abuse you to make everyone THINK we hate each other, while secretly, behind closed doors, we're stripping down and preparing to frak each other's brains out' routine. Lol. My brain used to be so innocent. >_< Where did this come from?

I love the miniseries. Roslin established power and got to be in control for like, the only time in the show, Apollo was actually cool, Helo- well, I still wanted to thwack him, but that's a step down from my usual urge to beat him to a pulp, and Baltar wasn't the writer's pet just yet. And it was fun watching it with Katherine- she's usually the one with the sexual innuendo and outrageous, colorful remarks, making me scramble to match wits with her, but two seconds into Six frakking Baltar, she's shielding her eyes behind a cushion. *smirks*

1. Go to your desktop and press the Print Scrn key [located on the right side of the F12 key]. [If you have a Mac, push the 'apple' key, shift and three]
2. Open a graphics program [like Picture Manager, Paint or Photoshop] and do a Paste [CTRL + V]. If you wish, you can 'edit' the image before saving it.
3. Post the picture here or on your lj. You can also give a short explanation on the look of your desktop if you want. You can explain why you prefer such a look or why it is full of icons. Things like that.

'k, disclaimer: my laptop is of such crapitude that a lot of normal functions you take for granted? Don't work. Ctrl + alt + del is one. Print scrn is another. So I'm doing this for the Deakin computer. Which means you don't get to see the clutter of mine and I can continue to pretend to be a neat, organized person. :P

Of the most epic awesome...a Twilight parody of unparalleled excellence.

I am so in love with this clip. It starts off slow, like a re-enactment of the movie with added snark-'if you were smart, you'd stay away from me', 'well, let's say for argument's sake that I'm not smart...'- then it just explodes into hilarious fun.

marguerite_krux: (misc-who needs a life?)

Katherine wants me to come over for a movie night at her place. I check with mother, who tells me that I'm not allowed to go anywhere til after the exams. So I'm supposed to study from 9am-4pm, I get an hour and half with my grandmother in the afternoon and then I'm stuck at home for the evening. And that's the extent of what I charitably call a life til 20 Feb. If I didn't have LJ, god, I don't know what I'd do. At least I get some human contact. I assume you guys are all human, at any rate. :P

But yeah, it sucks that I have to turn down the one person that wants to spend time with me. Although I resent her a little because hey, she didn't have time for me November or December, and now halfway through Jan she decides to get in touch. By the time exams are over, it'll have been four months since we've hung out. Shining example of friendship, huh?

--------------------

[livejournal.com profile] spence_reid  tagged me a month back for this and it took me a while to realize. I love doing memes but for some reason, it takes me ages to figure out I’ve been tagged. *headdesk*

‘k, Spence didn’t get the rules- tsk tsk- so in short, the meme is to write sixteen things about yourself, tag the person who tagged you and fifteen other people, then comment on this post with a link to your own.

Been so tardy with this one, but hey, at least I put a lot of effort in, right?

Last but definitely not least, the wonderful Marguerite Krux.

Now, between virtuous honorable jungle girl and duplicitous scheming black widow with a checkered past, who do you think I should fangirl? LOL.

Marguerite won me over with her flexible morality, sharp barbs and witty quips, and her deeply deeply buried soft compassionate side. Not that I don't like Veronica, but the whole black-and-white integrity and honor deal gets tiresome after a while. Marguerite brought the final tally to four 'intrinsically good' characters and four 'morally ambiguous' characters. Nice bit of harmony there.

'We need each other. Like a cat needs a ball of string...' )

RL thing of squee.

Some random guy just said, 'You've got some nice pins, those Stargate ones,' and pointed at the badges I have pinned to my bag. I just grinned and said thanks. Mwahaha. *feels proud*

And to think I would've brought my other bag today because I almost couldn't be bothered transferring things back and forth from one to the other. I feel gleeful. :D

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE HEALING POWER OF GEEKING OUT WITH ANOTHER PERSON.

Also, I printed out a bunch of stuff for this other dude whose card wasn't working, and although it only cost like, 50c at the most, he gave me $2. Hmm. I know, I know, should've been polite and all, 'No, no, it's not necessary,' but goddamnit, that's not how I operate. My working theory is 'don't be generous and offer something unless you're willing to give it up'. None of this 'polite refusal' crap, kthxbai. If that makes me mercenary, well... *shrugs* I can't say no. I WON'T. :P

marguerite_krux: (marguerite-fire)
It's settled. I'm going to be a super villain who has the power to steal teen metabolisms and[livejournal.com profile] spence_reid  is my sidekick. I flirted with the idea of being a hero and a force for good, but this is more true to my character, lol. Just need to think about costumes now! Since we're going to be super fit and have the perfect bodies, my options are endless!

I do like this number by [livejournal.com profile] cinegirl2000 .

I always saw Emily as more of a Wonder Woman type, since fotobridget2's fic Super Hero Family brainwashed me, but Elektra works too.

-------------------

Mother and I had another of our now-weekly tennis matches. Til mother goes back to school, anyway. Stupid school. Although, that's kinda like saying 'stupid paycheck', so I shall forgive mother the inconvenience of her working for a living and not being around to entertain me when I wish.

At any rate, I lost again, 6-4. *sighs* There was one crucial shot when we were on 5-4 that could've changed the direction of the game in my favor but I was too tired and a little overconfident and TOTALLY HIT THE NET. Ugh. Why is it in basketball or netball, they're all like, 'Nothing but net, baby' and it's a good thing, but here the net is baaaad. I shall brood over that one shot for the rest of the day now. >:{

But it wasn't all bad news. Even though I lost the match, at least I was engaging in physical exercise and burning calories. Since I can no longer rely on my teen metabolism, that is somewhat important if I don't want to become the human blimp. So it's a win-win situation, really. Or that's what I tell myself to make losing sting less, lol.

Also, mother took pity on me and bought me some water ices, so yay! It's cool when my pitifulness leads her to spoil me. :D Okay, so water ices aren't really healthy and shouldn't be a 'reward' for running around, sweating it out on a court- Katherine, my favorite bubble burster, informed me it's basically frozen sugar- but I have this bizarre affliction where I cannot read or watch something good without eating at the same time. Water ices are yummy, take a while to eat, they don't fill up your stomach and don't feel as naughty as say, chocolate. They're also way less expensive than chocolate, bonus!

But yeah, I have this compulsion to munch or gnaw on SOMETHING when reading or watching, otherwise I can't enjoy whatever it is I'm engaged in. One of the reasons I hate going to restaurants, because for some reason, it's considered rude to ignore the people you're with and read with your food. Stupid social conventions.

I am made of fail.

So, I'm working on this lab report on the relationship between situational/dispositional factors and job satisfaction that's due in- ten hours time, of course, because my organizational skills are nonexistent. Spent an hour freaking out because I couldn't explain the fact that the results were totally not what I predicted. I mean, extraversion- which is all like, people with optimism and confidence and an outgoing nature- so you'd think it'd influence job satisfaction was NOT related at all, and for some reason, openness- which I had said should be unrelated to job satisfaction- had a significant positive correlation. *HEADSPLODES*

I'm reading through different articles, paging through the textbook and notes and spazzing out- til I look at the results for the thousandth time and figure out, OMG I MISPLACED THE ASTERISK OF SIGNIFICANCE. I could've totally screwed up this stupid essay, all for the want of an asterisk. When I was copying out the results, that little star thingy indicated which results were significant and which weren't and I totally switched it around for some reason.

God gives me the eyes to see but the brain to fail. Ugh.

Also, I finally got my hands on Jim Butcher's new book, Princeps Fury. *bounces* :D
marguerite_krux: (vala- squee)

After Elizabeth…I floundered around aimlessly, really. No other shows, no other characters really appealed to me. I tried 4400, but after Tom & Alana and Diana & Marco hooked up, I sulked off. Threshold got cancelled. SVU got stupid. Cold Case…I don’t know what happened there, my affection just burnt out, I guess. I went through this Lilly/Scotty phase during which I was incredibly obsessed but then after that, I just got bored with it.

I was disillusioned with Stargate SG-1, and when I heard about the new Farscape actors joining the show, I was scathing as hell about it, all, ‘Omg, why are these rejects joining SG-1? DESPERATE, much?’ I thought it was a big publicity stunt and that SG-1 had jumped the shark. [Although it had pretty much succeeded in that when Sam hooked up with Pete, ugh]

Then I saw Prometheus Unbound, and when I realized the sexy chick in black armor that beat the crap out of Daniel was one of the new cast members, I COMPLETELY changed my tune and began singing her praises, lol.

'You know, I never thought I'd agree with my father but now I'm starting to remember how he used to go on about, you nurture them and you raise them and you teach them the best that you can, and then all they do is break your heart. I always assumed his experience was just tainted by me...' )

-----------------------

RL thing that makes me happy...

Mother's Christmas decorations! I usually can't be bothered getting all excited over trees, but she went unique and creative this year! Bought a REAL PLANT for a change, relieving our decade old fake one of its duties, and she bought these cute little birds and butterflies to sparkle it up and make it pretty and adorable. *squees*

marguerite_krux: (lizabeth-brains beauty strength)
Following Voyager, I became hooked on SG-1 and Carter. I did care a lot about her but I think it was more because of the whole Sam/Jack relationship. I tend to love a show more and forgive its flaws if there is a ship I can support. But after being jerked around for several seasons, and then the unpleasantness of Carter's move to SGA, which had me [unfairly] hating her for a while, I got a little turned off. Seasons 9 and 10 and the movies rekindled my affection for her, but there's still that little bit of lingering meh-ness.

So for today, a character I've never had any doubts or reservations about loving whole-heartedly.

Elizabeth Weir.

'I'm still trying to understand how you thought it was a good idea to test this device by having someone throw you off a balcony...' )

---------------------------

Real life thing I am happy about...

Netty, who is awesome. A little too responsible and mature at times, making me look bad, but I forgive her for that, lol. I love her so much for accepting the fangirl that I am, instead of making fun of me like so many other people, and being willing to go on the wild journey of addiction to a variety of shows with me. We've done SGA, SG-1, and X-files so far. Working on Criminal Minds, Kyle XY and Gossip Girl right now. And I'm determined to get her into The Lost World, heh.

In addition to being easy to convert into a fan of multiple shows, she's also a great listener and sounding board when I'm upset or needing to vent about something. Of course, she has a boyfriend so I can't monopolize her all the time, sadly, but she does wonders for my morale.

marguerite_krux: (janeway-girly squee)

For today’s featured character…another redhead, lol. I have a theme going here.

Kathryn Janeway.

--------------------------

Real life, non-fandom things that I am happy about...finally sending my cards, lol. I can't believe how much I procrastinated and stressed when I only have TWO to send.  *facepalm* I have the organizational skills of an unborn baby

I am also thankful for my mother.  We have our rough patches, she gets pissy and cold and non-communicative, I get sulky and moody and rebellious, but she is truly awesome. Even if she has a regrettable lack of interest in tv shows. [Both my parents  don't care about tv! Where did I get my obsessive fangirl genes from?]

Yesterday, she picked me up  a few meters down the street from Ma's door, and I was all grouchy and hot and tired and miffed that she hadn't been around to give me a lift earlier. Illogical, undeserved and...I'd like to say it was OOC, but...well, everyone has off days, right?

Anyway, instead of taking offense at my  bad temper, she went and bought me McDonald's because she knew I hadn't eaten all day. After visiting Ma, we went to town and browsed around the different stores, checked out BORDERS, which is cool and another thing I'm happy about. Its romance section is epic. And it was just fun and easy to hang out with her. We shopped, chatted, giggled like schoolgirls, had coffee and had a really good time. Way better than the Christmas party I was invited to but blew off because of my social anxiety and neurotic fear of group gatherings. [I ran into three people I knew in town and it was so nerve-wracking trying to maintain a conversation with them. *headdesk* Social skillz = FAIL]

Then today, she turned up at the post office when she knew was there, mailing my cards. I didn't have ID so it was lucky she was around and signed the form that said I wasn't sending knives or drugs or weapons of mass destruction to [livejournal.com profile] justhere1971 , lol. [Who admits to it anyway?] Which is lucky for me in the event that I broke a law or something, because her signature's on the document, heh. :P

marguerite_krux: (scully-smart is sexy)

I’m not celebrating every single character I’ve ever loved, because there are only 8 days in this meme, so I’m selecting the ones with the most impact or greater prominence in my life.

After Xena, there was Maeve in The Adventures of Sinbad. All I can remember is their love-hate relationship [all my ships start off with the characters hating each other! LOL, what does that say about me?] and Maeve’s handy ability to throw fireballs. When I think about it, the show was similar to Xena and Legend of the Seeker, actually.

I became totally obsessed with Maria in The Sound of Music, watched that movie every day for months. My parents actually banned me from seeing it for a while because they were so disturbed at the level of my obsession. :O

But today’s much-loved character is a different redhead…

Dana Scully.

'Time passes in moments... moments which, rushing past, define the path of a life, just as surely as they lead towards its end. How rarely do we stop to examine that path, to see the reasons why all things happen, to consider whether the path we take in life is our own making, or simply one into which we drift with eyes closed. But what if we could stop, pause to take stock of each precious moment before it passes? Might we then see the endless forks in the road that have shaped a life? And, seeing those choices, choose another path?' )

------

Today’s non-fandom-related thing that I am happy for…money! Specifically, I received a cheques from my old high school’s parent association, which was completely unexpected, to say the least. I’ve been at uni for three years, so it’s safe to say I wasn’t anticipating mail from them, let alone $63! [It’s funny how my horoscopes never get it right- they’ll predict amazing things all year but on the rare occasion I actually go on a trip or score a windfall, there’s not a single hint] I think the money was for some old school clothes I gave for the second hand sale years ago, and it’s cool that they were so honest about compensating me for the sale after all this time.

Things that make me happy or thankful…

Since this thing apparently has no rhyme or reason, I’m playing around with it a little. My fandoms bring me a lot of joy and pleasure, so I thought I’d take a trip down memory lane and revisit the very first tv character I fangirled. [‘Tv’ is an important distinction- according to my family, Ariel was my first obsession but I was like, 3, so it doesn’t count]

XENA, WARRIOR PRINCESS.

'In a time of ancient gods, warlords and kings, a land in turmoil cried out for a hero. She was Xena, a mighty princess forged in the heat of battle. The power. The passion. The danger. Her courage will change the world...' )

 ---------------------

In a non-fandom-related topic, I have to say I’m grateful my Psych lecturer allowed me to hand in my essay late. I wasn’t really paying attention to my summer units after the crappiness of second semester exams, and it turned out I had missed out on a compulsory assessment task, without which I automatically failed. I don’t get credit for what I ended up handing in, of course, but it was lucky I was allowed to do it at all and thus ‘stay alive’ in the unit, as he put it. He didn’t have to grant me such mercy, and I really can’t afford to mess up this early, so I’m glad that worked out.

Your result for What Planet are You From? Test...
You are from the Moon!

Okay, yes, I know the moon is not a planet.

The moon, is, however, the Earth’s only natural satellite and the fifth largest natural satellite in our solar system. For this reason alone it could be that it has life on it, right? Yes, there have been many explorations to prove otherwise, but for many years people on Earth believed that the moon was inhabited. It is also the only celestial body that man has stepped upon.

There are a dozen gods and goddesses associated with the moon. The word Lunar, which relates to the moon’s cycle, is from the Latin word Lunar. One of the reasons that people tend to associate a female deity with the moon might be related to the female menstrual cycle. With that said, it’s is definitely time to move along before I get myself in trouble.

What does this say about you?

You desire contact with the world around you. You have a loving and nurturing nature, but you can suffer from mood changes and go through cycles. You aren’t afraid to stand up for what you believe in or to even stand up for the little guy that tends to get beat up on or forgotten. You probably even tend to put other people before yourself.

As a child of the moon you have a cold and warm side. When someone wrongs you it better be something they never do again. You may forgive them once, but you will never forget and a second time can cut them totally out of your life. You can be the life of the party, but only if it suits you. You are just as happy finding a few people that you can talk to and more than likely there are very few people that you can’t talk to.

You probably usually have a smile on your face and make people feel comfortable with you. You are just one of those people that others open up to and then wonder why.

So, moon child, in a way you are just like the tide. You ebb and flow in life and you like it best when you are in control.

Hee, mood swings are definitely my province. I’ll swing between despair and elation ten times before lunch on a daily basis.

And while I tend to be a good listener and people do open up to me, I’m not so sure about the life of the party thing. Depends what kinda party, I guess. If it’s a convention of sci-fi geeks, totally, if it’s a bunch of people in a bar, drinking and dancing, I’m the wallflower doing her best to melt into the background and counting the minutes til I can escape, lol.

Oh, and for anyone who ever wondered what the distinction was between nerds, dorks and geeks... I am now enlightened.
Be enlightened with me. )

Oh, the horror. My parents confiscated my laptop due to abysmal exam results. I get to use it for two hours a day, which is awfully generous from their POV, but I'm mourning the end of my late night fic reading, watching random eps, and generally wasting time on pleasurable though non-constructive pursuits. It HURTS. >:[

But at least they didn't ban me from seeing my grandmother again. She's the only person I hang out with these days. And I love her dearly but that's a little sad. This week, though, I did something new and different. I spent an afternoon with someone of my age group! Okay, it was just my cousin- for whom I have a great deal of affection, but I have to admit that doesn't even qualify as toe-dipping in the raging treacherous waters of the young adult social scene.

Speaking of time-wasting fun...

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

In October I helped [livejournal.com profile] sapphs hide a body (-173 points). In April I gave [livejournal.com profile] odakota_rose a kidney (1000 points). Last week I committed genocide... Sorry about that, [livejournal.com profile] mcgarrygirl78 (-5000 points). In July I saved a busload of nuns in Angola (326 points). Last Wednesday I helped [livejournal.com profile] alyssa22 see the light (8 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-3839 points). For Christmas I deserve a spanking!

Sincerely,
borg_princess

Heh. I love that saving ONE life is worth a thousand points but committing genocide? Only merits a deduction of 5000 points. It's like they say, one death is a tragedy, a thousand deaths are a statistic. O.o Or maybe that odakota_rose is nearly as valuable as an entire race! There's a more positive outlook!

Speaking of naughty and nice, I'm kinda in love with Sylar now. Yep. I've gone to the dark side. He and Elle are just too deliciously evil to resist.
HOW PRETTY ARE THEY?! )

And with Hiro and Matt and the other dumbass 'heroes' screwing up and making things worse all the time, it's actually easier to root for the bad guys. The only good guy I like is Ando and he doesn't even have a power! *pouts* Although I admit, I've been out of circulation for a while, maybe he's picked up one in the new eps, that would be cool. But from what I've seen of the new season, a few people are missing. Wtf happened to the new characters from last season? The black chick- Monica? With the ability I want, being able to do anything after watching it once. *glees*

And speaking of dumbasses...it's almost embarrassing to admit that in ep 10, I kinda liked Riley. For one brief glorious shining moment, she was almost cool. OMFG, NO, REALLY, I DIDN'T HATE HER! )

Of course by the next ep, she slid back into her stupid immature brain-dead ways once more. It was too much to hope for a better ending. Gah. Dude, she and John are totally made for each other. I just pity the future of humanity. *headdesks*
